Rep. responds to Obama: 'You believe in socialism'

(CNN) – The State of Union address may have appeared to be a more civil affair to viewers at home, but at least one Republican congressman was launching some fiery rhetoric on Twitter as President Obama spoke.

Tweeting during the president's speech in the confines of his office, Georgia Rep. Paul Broun said at one point, "Mr. President, you don't believe in the Constitution. You believe in socialism."

The tweet was sent under the handle @RepPaulBrounMD, the account the congressman uses for his congressional duties. (Broun also has a separate account, @PaulBrounforGA, that he uses for political purposes.) The remark quickly circulated on Twitter, with some users comparing it to Rep. Joe Wilson's famous "You Lie" outburst two years ago.

Several of Broun's other instant responses to the president were also sharply critical:
"All children will be poor if we continue with Obama's policies #fb"

"From my seat, Obama's call for more investments sounds like more govt spending #fb #SOTU #TCOT"

If the govt would get out of the way, we could have innovation and development"

A Broun spokesperson was not immediately available for comment. But according to Roll Call, the congressman has watched the last few State of the Union Addresses from his office so he can tweet during the debate.

Broun did part on a somewhat positive note, however: "Good speech-but long on hope and short on reality."

I was watching the speech on CSPAN2 online and Rep. Broun was tweeting the most nasty and negative comments of anyone all night. When the President talked of a isignigicant ncrease in graduation rates of a once failing school, Rep. Broun commented that he "wonders if those graduates can even their diplomas..." among other things. So this doesn't surprise me at all....And btw it had to be one of his aids doing all the nasty tweeting, because there is no way that Rep. Broun himself could have been tweeting THAT MUCH during a SOTU speech without calling attention to himself.......Totally unprofessional. How did this guy get elected?

I guess if you don't have an intelligent argument to counter the President, you just call him a socialist.

I think his tweet was a fairly accurate description of what it appears Obama believes in.

If this is what the congressdork is doing (sitting in his office trying to come up with witty tweets) maybe he could go down to the House cafeteria and help the staff clean up. At least that way he would be playing some sort of roll in government.

Rep. Paul Broun is either a liar or he doesn't have a clue about what real socialism is. It hasn't even been 24 hours since the President's speech and extremists like Mr. Broun have already started to spout their right wing rhetoric. Tone it down, please!

This is the reason nothing gets done in Washington, all some can do is throw stones to continue and try to keep confusion going. Every time President Obama speaks to the union, some nutcase republican has something negative and hateful to say because they can't stand the fact that this president is doing a great job without them. He knew the tweet would be publicized therefore wanted to create some attention to himself, it was all planned, coward!

I believe in socialism. It exists. It isn't a figment of our imagination. Plus we all benefit from it in one form or another. We all use publicly owned and funded roads. We are protected by publicly funded police. And last time I checked our military wasn't comprised of private, for-profit companies competing against each other in the free market. The sooner the general public, and especially our members of congress, realize that socialism and communism are not one and the same the better we will all be.

Gee, Congressman Broun, are you too cowardly to have your comments posted on the Congressional Record? That way people could officially call you to task for the libel and innuendo that you are casting! What is it about Southern Republicans and their inability to see past the ends of their noses that someone may be offering a solution to problems other than them?

Republicans are so worthless. If Obama was white and a Republican and made the EXACT same speech, this loser would be praising him.

He's obvioulsy ignorant of what socialism is. Sad he's able to be a representative to the U.S. Congress and be so ignorant. I thought Bush's speechwrite David Frum put it nicely when he suggested a speech Obama could give for the State of the Union. One of his lines was, "We can see the future of a better economy already emerging. Over the past twelve months, we have created more than one million net new jobs in the private sector - while government employment has shrunk by more than 250,000. Corporate profitability has reached record highs, meaning that companies can afford to hire as demand revives... If this is 'socialism,' what would capitalism look like?"

The reality is, though, he was more likely cynically trying to become this year's Joe Wilson, knowing that people on the right who want to hear that crap will send him millions of dollars to his campaign which he can then use to live the good life.

Since when is taking care of each other socialism? Are we really such a coldhearted country that we don't care who can't afford health care? Are we really a lesser country than Canada, Germany, and others that provide universal health care? No one in Canada goes into bankruptcy or loses their home to pay for health care. Why are our citizens less deserving?

Well, considering that Rep. Ryan said that his party believed in helping those who cannot provide for themselves – socialist thinking seems to span the political divide these days.

I hereby retract my vote for Obama, he is a Neo-liberal. Meaning; he is a far cry from Kennedy and FDR from yesteryear. Both helped enact policies while still being as close to the constitution as possible...

Another loser republican with no class. What do you expect from down South. Ever notice that most of those who criticize the President or the government are from Hicksville? Why is he in his office in Georgia? Isn't Congress in session? How come he's not at work? Sounds llike he doesn't have respect for the Constitution. This fool wouldn't know socialism if it bit him in the butt.

"...sounds like more govt spending" Well, yes, investing in the future of our nation involves spending and isn't that why we pay taxes? The difference is where the Parties want to spend our tax dollars. The GOP wants to give huge benefits to the wealthiest Americans and corporations. Democrats prefer to invest in education, training, health, businesses that create jobs, and public transportation that is someone useful to people and businesses across the nation. We all support defense but not unnecessary wars that rob our military of resources needed to pursue the real enemy. Bush/Cheney doubled the deficit and left behind 2 wars from someone else to clean up. They cut taxes when funds were needed to pay for those wars because they didn't want taxpayers to feel the pain of invading Iraq until they were out of office. Now, they want to blame those who are trying to clean up after the children. Some of us haven't forgotten and won't fall for the spin.
