Update: President Obama and Rahm Emanuel spoke by telephone Tuesday night after the election results were known and before Emanuel spoke, an Emanuel campaign aide confirms to CNN.
Chicago (CNN) - Rahm Emanuel, the former chief of staff to President Barack Obama, won the Chicago mayoral election over five other challengers Tuesday, topping the 50% threshold to avoid a runoff vote.
With almost 75% of the vote counted, Emanuel had almost 55% of the vote, far outdistancing his rivals.

Well some things never change. It's comforting to know in these changing times that Chicago's legacy of dirty rotten politics is still alive and kicking. What a joke. Is anyone surprised that Rahm Emanuel won? Of course he was going to win. He wasn't a citizen of Chicago in the last two years and yet they let him run as Mayor anyway. I guess it's still all about money and who you know. If you grease the right palms in City Hall you can buy yourself an office. It makes me sick!
i am happy for emanuel to wine he have sarve the counter for 22year and he is the right man for chacago keep it u what your good work i will vort for u in the precedentcal race thank from in upperdarby
Miguel del Valle ran a clean campaign, and I wish he would've won. That being said...congratulations,Rahm...do what you promised and work for the people.
What was Chicago thinking?
Congrats, Mayor Rahm!!!
Another thug and crony of obamblas...
Great news, another insider gets to keep the charade going. Arrrggghhh.
He has his work cut out for him, but he's a tough cookie.
I guess its easy to win when your the only canidate. thats chicago politics for ya. wow what a surprise. good luck chicago. typical. i bet no one could have guessed that outcome.. crooked crooked crooked. remind you of the current whitehouse?? i would say i cant beleive this. but i can. sign of the times.
Come on no one else can comment on this unprofessiona foul mouth. well at least he not in our whitehouse anymore.lol
Congrats to Rahmbo!
Yeah, if this wasnt a staged election, Obama is really a citizen..
Gee, who didn't see that coming? The gangs all should be thrilled.
They want Emanuel? Heck, they can have Obama on Monday, January 21st, 2013!
A great day for the city of Chicago! Rahm Emanuel will do great things for the city in it's difficulty and he will clean up the corruption. He's a man of intregity!
Wait a minute. A Chicago thug won the Chicago mayoral election? NO. WAY! Next you'll tell me the governor of Illinois is corrupt.
Another union coddling democrat liberal ready to bust Chicago and force more people to move to the relatively honest government in the suburbs. Where will slimy democratic legislators go when Illinois goes broke from the SEIU theft and has to shut down its government? Notice all of these state legislators who don't want to deal with reality and do their jobs hide out in Illinois? It must be like the "Hole in the Wall" for corrupt, union toady state legislators from Wisconsin and Indiana.
Rahm wins ... and this will be yet another city/State which we will need to bailout.
Congratulations CNN for getting another Democrat elected into office.
Now you can start working to get Obama re-elected in 2012!
CONGRATULATIONS RAHM!!!!
A decisive win.
All the best to you.
