Boehner in 'war' against Planned Parenthood

(CNN) – House Speaker John Boehner is stepping up his attacks against Planned Parenthood, the partially public-funded organization that offers several health care services to low-income women.

Speaking to the Christian Broadcasting Network's David Brody, Boehner vigorously supported a recent House vote that defunds the organization entirely, a move that would strip it of more than $75 million in government cash.

Currently, the organization is allowed to apply government subsidies to all services except abortion procedures. Critics argue that restriction is too limited, saying that applying the government's money to other procedures leaves more of the group's own cash on hand to allocate to abortion-related services.

"The goal here again is to cut spending and keep the government open," Boehner said of the move to defund the organization, in an interview published Sunday. "I met with a lot of religious leaders earlier today to talk about the strategy and I think it's important that we understand that what we want to do here is win the war not just win a battle and there will be an opportunity sometime in order to win the big war and we're looking for that opportunity."

The defunding vote from the lower chamber came as part of a continuing resolution that included dramatic spending cuts across a range of programs. The Democrat-controlled Senate is set to consider the spending bill this week and is likely to reject a significant amount of the GOP's spending cuts, including those that affect Planned Parenthood.

But despite Boehner's support of defunding the group – a move that has long been supported by social conservatives – the House Speaker says he's not willing to shut down the government over that measure alone.

"There are a lot of options on the table but I don't think in the short term, the CR (continuing resolution) is the opportunity we're looking for," Boehner said

The interview comes a day before Planned Parenthood launched a new ad week-long $200,000 ad campaign on radio, cable and television networks in the Washington, DC market seeking to raise awareness for the variety of services it provides and apply pressure to the Senate ahead of its budget vote.

The spot features Carolyn Smithers, a woman who says she was diagnosed early at a Planned Parenthood facility with cervical cancer.

"Without Planned Parenthood, I wouldn't be here today," she says.

So no reproductive healthcare for women, they get pregnant, then their children die because the programs to feed them are cut off. Seems easier to provide birth control to poor women, but this idiot only cares about big oil and golfing with lobbiest. Gee how would Jebus cut the deficit, certainly not by taking things away from the poor and giving millions to the rich.

Well, I don't think he is really saying that women should be barefoot and pregnant. Maybe he actually thinks they shouldn't get pregnant unless they intend to care for the child or give it up for adoption, but just not kill it.

Do the GOPers not recognize that the vast majority of services provided by Planned Parenthood actually PREVENT abortions? Planned Parenthood used to be supported by many conservatives for that very reason. Today's rabid, illogical campaign to destroy the organization just goes to show how far that party has shifted to the right.

If they can spend/waste $200,000 on an Ad campaign, they clearly do not need any federal money! I support defunding them ASAP.

That should get more people employed! The Republicans are an epic failure and do not deserve to be in any positions of importance. We will remember this in 2012.

Remember when jobs where the most important thing the GOP touted in assuming the majority in the House?? Yeah what happend to that plan? I know exactly what happened though their plan was to come into office and begin cutting immediately from gov'ts spending...THIS is supposed to provide jobs? If voters haven't woken up to who is ACTUALLY fighting for them every day in Congress and what is in their best interest then our electorate is as uninformed as it showed itself to be in Nov 2010.

So, instead of being able to help me and my wife get birth control pills, he wants us to get pregnant and go onto welfare? Where's the cost/benefit analysis of that? My wife works, I'm finishing school, and neither of us can afford the premium for insurance yet. So we go through PP for the birth control. Save a penny, spend a hundred. Sound financial advice...

this goes thru unwanted pregnacies will increase, more taxes on working americans to pay for all the unwanted babies, more women will die of healthcare issues that could have been provented, more people on the lists of uninsured. Here's an idea, if you have proof that federal funds are funding abortions go after the facilities who are breaking the law. Oh non that wont work since that's clearly not the motivation

Whaat ever happened to "JOBS, JOBS, JOBS",...?????
It seems that every time conservatives have to make a decision on actual governing, they find some seconday ot tertiary reason to concentrate on smething else. What does Planned Parenthood have to do with governing the United States of America ? The reasons for or against that origanization are essentially moral and do not have anything to do with JOBS, THE ECONOMY, THE DEFICIT, THE TWO WARS WE ARE ENGAGED IN........

The fact is.....They were elected on basis of promises made that were only made in order to get elected. The fact is .... they have absolutely no idea what to do so........ they obfuscate and try to divert attention to minor issues...... At this point there needs to be an adult in the room and all I see are a bunch of whining crybabies that have nothing to offer but criticism ot "the other guy"..... We had better smarten up and begin to elect serious people . These poseurs we have now are ltting our country go without a valid government. Boehner is a failure. The Right Wing doesn't know what to do. The Left Wing has no "Cojones" and can't respond with any kind of strength...... Where are the leaders ???????

Good for Boehner. Planned Parenthood has gone too far on so many levels. I don't care what people do or where they do it but I sure do not want to pay for their abortions. Funding for counseling and planning is fine but that should be it. If they get pregnant there are churches all over the country that will pay your living & medical costs & find a home for the child without the taxpayer having to foot the bill for an abortion.

Any woman who votedfor this clown, republican, democrat or independent should be ashamed right now. This man is leading the banner to strip women of their rights and he is doing it in such a disrespectful way. People were so focused on trying to do Obama in that no one really took the time to understand and comphrehend what a vote for Boehner really meant. The bible does say "whoa to the woman giving suck in these last days". Republicans are always saying President and Obama and Mrs. Obama are trying to take away choices, that couldn't be further from the truth, The republicans are doing it, just pay attention (planned parenhood, unions right to collectively bargain, education, trying to resegregate. I would take Nancy Pelosi and President Obama any day. There are going to be some very sorry people before this is all over!

so: we should pay for our own heath insurance if you ever get any (repeal repeal), get your own pension plans, the Government will shrink (GOP wants small government) and thousands will be kicked on the streets ("so what"- says Boehner), the Unions will also go to hell so if you want your rights protected hire a lawyer (wish you luck), no move free Dental and Vison for union members, no abortions-good any funding for the adoptions naah will be saving the money no spending..peoples lives is worth only as an embryo once you are born the hell with you.

Amusing how conservatives consistently go out of their way to impose their ideals by stripping away the rights of whatever cause dujour of evil they are tilting their windmills as that day. I sure wish they would stop taking active measures to decrease the amount of freedom available to the citizenry.

XWngLady there is a heavy metal group named God Forbid. They have a song entitled "Antihero" these are the lyrics –

Send us to die, across the seas
Where it's told we want to deceive
Send us, so far from home
Empty hearts want to, believe the fight is for humanity
Look at yourself... heroic state of existence
    Patriot in your mind
Look around you, the world is caving in
    Victim of life, the antihero
Torn between right and wrong, the antihero
Red white and dead all over
When does the war against the war begin

I love the opening 2 lines, Patriot in your mind, and the closing line.

Would love to know what the suits that control this country feel about the soldiers that are dealing with this on the daily.

William – The Pro-life lobby made sure that NO CENT of taxpayer's origin is used in an abortion procedure.
Planned Parenthood can't use a cent that comes from many of its private donors to that purpose as well.
The logic of the 'OK, but by using the taxpayer's money to other procedures frees them to use other sources to fund their abortion procedures so let's stop all public fundings for them!!!' is not only cruel and insane, it's just stupid.
What services are funded with taxpayer's money and what the women that goes through them achieve in the end?
    Hint: Healthy pregnancies.
    Are you against that?

@ Mark – Part of what Planned Parenthood does is education – to prevent unwanted pregnancies (and therefore many abortions) and to make sure women get proper medical care. Just thought I would try to help education YOU before you broadcast your misconceptions again.

I don't know why it is so hard to compromise on this stuff. People don't want tax money going toward abortion. Other people want to make sure birth control is available for low income folks. So you make tax money contingent on planned parenthood sites that will not offer abortion services but fund the pap smears, hiv screenings, and birth control. I'm guessing the majority could live with that. Boom ...done.
