Profitable bank bailout program "unfortunate"
WASHINGTON (CNN) - The controversial bank bailout program may have saved some financial institutions from crumbling, but a Treasury official said the rescue plan was actually “unfortunate.”
Speaking to a small group of reporters, Timothy Massad, Treasury Acting Assistant Secretary for Financial Stability said “it’s never fair to have to use taxpayer dollars to rescue any institution.”

Republican senators push for balanced budget amendment
WASHINGTON (CNN) – More than a dozen Republican senators announced Thursday they would push for a constitutional amendment requiring Congress to pass an annual balanced budget.
"It's an historic day for the Republican Party. We all agree on something," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, joked, as he spoke about the proposed amendment that has the support of all 47 Republican senators.

Romney's big haul
Washington (CNN) - Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney raised nearly $1.9 million for his federal and state political action committee in the first quarter of 2011, a Romney aide confirmed to CNN.
The Free and Strong America PAC has now given over $400,000 to Republican candidates and conservative causes as Romney gears up to launch a possible bid for the White House in 2012.

Tea Party activist to GOP: 'Take off your lace panties,' cut more from the budget
Washington (CNN) - Some conservative Tea Party activists attending a rally on Capitol Hill Thursday pushed for deeper cuts to the federal budget with many saying if more spending isn't slashed - they believe that government operations should go dark.
One activist - Kathy Dirr who resides in Speaker John Boehner's Ohio district - used stark language as she spoke to the crowd, urging House Republican leadership to, "take off your lace panties" and push for deeper cuts.

Poll: Huckabee and Obama neck-and-neck in hypothetical race
(CNN)-Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee would go toe-to-toe with President Obama if he sought the presidency in 2012, according to a new Fairleigh Dickinson University survey. Among registered voters nationwide, 46 percent said they'd vote for Huckabee and the same number would re-elect the president.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who is also considering another presidential run, only trailed the president by one percentage point. Voters favored the president 44 to 43 percent over Romney, who wrote a Wednesday op-ed attacking Obama's treatment of unemployment and job creation in USA Today.

Feinstein: U.S. shouldn't arm rebels
Washington (CNN) – Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein said Thursday that we should not arm rebels in Libya as "we got burned" in previous wars by doing so.
In an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, the California Democrat said, "We did in Afghanistan; we got burned by it. We did in Iraq; we got burned by it. In other words, those weapons cropped up later being used against us, and I don't think that's something we ought to do."

Congress members swap hill hallways for the basketball court
Washington (CNN) Members of Congress took to the courts Wednesday night in a Georgetown University Law Center sponsored charity basketball game against the "Hoya Lawya" law faculty.
The 24th annual "Home Court" game raised over $400,000 for the Washington Legal Clinic for the homeless, according to event chair Jill Collins.

Cain: Media afraid of a 'real black man'
(CNN) - Potential 2012 presidential candidate Herman Cain said the media is afraid "a real black man might run against Barack Obama."
At a Wednesday appearance in Florida, Cain said if he were elected president "you get a chance to be batting .500" with black presidents.

Tea Party puts pressure on Boehner
Washington (CNN) - As Tea Party activists rallied outside the Capitol to urge House Speaker John Boehner not to compromise on government spending cuts, Boehner insisted he's continuing to fight for the House-passed spending cut bill, but he also warned those conservatives that there's a limit to what the Republican-led House can do.
"We control one third of one half of the government here in Washington. We can't impose our will on another body. We can't impose our will on the Senate," Boehner told reporters at his weekly press conference.
