Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama is proposing the creation of a panel that will recommend how the federal government can sell off properties it no longer needs, an administration official said Wednesday.
The independent board would include public- and private-sector members who will develop a plan for matching the government's real estate holdings with its core missions and programs, the official said on condition of anonymity.

These are always dangerous moves as they only one time revenue hits and do not deal with the fundimental problem.
Wow... $14 trillion in debt and Obama's answer is to have a garage sale.
I bet they are some where in northern New York, or Montana, or Idaho.....even Lizards do not lay eggs on these Barren fields, which is of two cents per acre.....well, it is good...
Agreed. Sell the Republicans in Congress. They just say "no", offer no solutions and just seem to be there to slow things down. I doubt they are worth much though.
Sounds good but the fact of the matter is this administration has INCREASED its property holdings over the last 2 years while the country was falling deeper and deeper in debt. Now they claim to want to address the problem. Just like them running up spending beyond all reason for two years then saying now they want spending cuts. So even after they "reduce" spending and property holdings, they will still be above 2008 levels. This is all just a big charade to these incompetents.
He ought to sell the white house and the congressional holdings as he isn't making good use of the people's money. The way he is running government, a sane person could do a better job out of the trunk of a car. The only people that aren't complaining are the unions and the non-taxpayers. It is really said when there are about as many non-taxpayers as there are taxpayers. Good job Obummie.
For those sites that might be suitable, how about a restriction that only manufacturing plants can be built on them? We need jobs, in spite o the fact you have ignored that issue, Mr. President.
Another social welfare program for the rich.
Buy depressed Government property (subsidized by taxpayer money)with "available" cash, or good credit (only the rich have) and sit on investment (only the rich can afford) until market turnaround or investor convinces politicians to build a highway through their property and sell it back for millions in profit.
how about selling our military bases in germany, japan....and getting our troops home asp..... there is a real savings
No one will buy it. Give it to the Salvation Army.
Reach People they scared to buy things legally, that the investigations will come after them.

They became Millionaires and Billionaires by RIPPING of people around the World, secretly.
Well at least we know Obama will have a future in the condo or used car industry once he's out of office in 2012.
Good bye California, we'll miss you!
Unused property mean republicans ?
SMART MOVE by our President. We have to CHANGE the way we do things and how we have done things for decades without looking at the BIGGER PICTURE and what impact it makes on the world, the deficit, the budget etc.
There are hundreds of federal agencies who are WORTHLESS and DO NOTHING but wastes tax-payers money. They DON'T FIX or SOLVE any issues, they are just more of the same RED TAPE BS that hinders us from getting anything accomplish and cutting the deficit.
First one to auction: GITMO. GIT rid of it.

Fair is Fair
If you open your eyes and ears, then you will learn about some of the other Obama proposals ..By the way, what are the Republicans actually proposing besides trashing and burning everything in sight. Please give me a break, you Obama haters love to bad mouth the man, but you guys don't possess half the brain this man possesses.
Why you are at, you should find time to criticize the Republicans who initially got us in this mess. Sorry, you cannot do that because it would be criticism, it would be telling the truth. Something you and your Republican buddies are short on these days.
Well.. that's fiscally responsible. Expect the GOP to start opposing it IMMIDIATELY.
