Washington (CNN) - House Speaker John Boehner said Thursday that the Obama administration is exacerbating rising energy costs and adding an extra financial burden to struggling American families and small businesses.
"The Obama administration has consistently blocked American energy production that would lower costs and create jobs in our country," Boehner said at a press conference announcing a House GOP initiative to push for more domestic energy production.
"They've canceled new leases for exploration, jeopardized our nuclear energy industry, and imposed a de facto moratorium on future drilling in our country. They've even pushed a cap-and-trade energy tax that the president himself admitted would cause the price of energy to skyrocket," Boehner said.
Republicans have repeatedly criticized the administration and congressional Democrats for what they perceive to be a lackluster response to the rapidly rising cost of oil.
But White House Chief of Staff William Daley defended the administration's efforts, telling NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that President Barack Obama is "extremely concerned" about the price hikes, and that all options - including tapping into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve - are being discussed.
A White House official told CNN late Thursday that Obama will hold a news conference at 11:15 am on Friday to discuss rising gas prices and other issues.
Yeah, but so far gas prices haven't reached the highs we regularly saw under Bush and the GOP's tenure.
WI Republican senators said they raised a combined $525,000 in the first 12 hours after the bill passed Wednesday night.
yep make sense to me Bohner...President Obama is pulling for energy and gas prices to rise and that will ensure him to be re-elected in 2012. Give me a freaking break. I'm sure this will go over great with the FoxNews crowd but there are still some of us out here that can think for themselves and most of us know the GOP has done little to NOTHING to try to create jobs in this country and trying to palm off rising gas prices as part ot the reason just plays well with your base and those that want to believe such dribble. I bet your buddies in the OIL INDUSTRY aren't complaining.
oh dont be silly, if Obama introduced anything now it would still take years to produce fruit.
That hits close to home too....a tanning bed is expensive to run.
Wrong answer crying boy. Gas prices were skyrocketing in 2008 until the dems gained solid majorities and President Obama was elected. Then, they stayed relatively stable until the rethugs retook the house. Almost instantly we were hearing how gas prices were going to rise. Co-ink-i-dink? I think not!
little boehner is in big oil's pocket. nuff said.
Here is a clue to Republicans: Clean and alternative fuels development can help America create jobs and become less dependence on foreign oil...it also helps us keep your environment clean. Also, why don't you Republicans stop protecting the gas/oil companies...stop giving them tax breaks when they are making record profits...tax them, fairly, and lets use the money for our education and clean and alternative fuel development programs.
Boehner is a liar. Speculators are causing energy costs to rise.
If Lying Bonehead would check his facts he would see that US oil production in 2006 was 7,610,000 and 9,056,000 in 2010. Google 'US Oil Production', it's easy. President Obama has done no harm to our energy production.
The price hike is because commodities brokers are out of control.
Regardless, we need to use a lot less, for a sustainable future.
At some point, we got to understand 1st grade math about the limited supply of crude oil and the fact that other developing nations are using more of it. Besides the Alaska sensitive areas, California, and Florida, there were no limitations during the Bush years, yet gas prices rose in 2008.
OPEC, Russia, and others control the markets supply. If we want to have an impact on prices, we better learn how to control the demand. If you control the demand, you also seriously impact trade defeceits.
Smart people know this, but political rhetoric will have us focusing on what we can do to reduce the price by the weekend.
Shoulda said:

Obama has absolutely no power to raise or decrease the oil prices. That power solely rests in your good friends at Exxon Mobil and Chevron.
When will this incompetent loser bring one jobs creating bills to the floor? Fire Boner 2012!
Just drill already! We need the oil and we need the jobs! What's so difficult to understand about that?
Amazing.
While Boehner is at it, why not add:
He caused and started the Iraq war, spending BILLIONS in the process, along with the war in Afghanistan. I'm guessing he also cut taxes while starting these two wars, borrowed BILLIONS from China, caused Katrina, and WROTE the bailout packagae for banks and big business, amazingly all BEFORE he took office.
Boy how I wish for the days BEFORE Obama, because it is well known before he was sworn in, we were growing like wild weed in the US, and adding jobs at the rate of a million a month.
Hell, it was pretty damn hot the other day, and I'm quite sure that was Obamas fault too. Oh...and all the blizzards this year too. That was Michelles fault.
Conservatives never stop amazing me.
I've never seen people so willing to be blind or in self-denial.
I notice he's silent on the actual cause of rising oil prices-speculators.I'd like to see the stink Republicans would raise if anyone, especially a Democrat, tried to legislate that.
And while we are the subject, if energy prices are so high, do we need to continue subsidizing Big Oil??
Let them buy their Congressmen on their own dime!
Obama didn't block energy production, Bp flooding the Gulf coast with oil blocked production.
At least Obama prepared us a little bit better for this kind of crisis. Guess Cash for Clunkers wasn't such a bad idea after all, was it, kids?
These mindless clowns will blame the president because the sky is blue. Boehner is pathetic.
I hope that gas goes to $5 per gallon and that U3 unemployment is reported accurately at the 10+ percent that it really is. This will make sure that 0bama is a 1 term POTUS. 0bamacare probably guarantees that but we have to make sure.
And this Boehner is getting my blood pressure way up there, and he knows that American oil production will not lower prices. Just another "talking from both side of the mouth" politico.
The gospel according to Bonehead: Obama bad, me good, Obama evil, me pure, Obama guarding the environment, me making sure every square inch is available for extraction, mining, drilling, and polluting. What future?
What did he think when gas was at $4.50 under Bush-boy??? hmmm Who did he blame then???
