(CNN)– Nevada Rep. Dean Heller told supporters Tuesday he intends to run for the seat being vacated by scandal-plagued Sen. John Ensign, a boost to national Republicans who view Heller as the best hope to keep the seat under GOP control.
"I know that the tough times are not yet over. However, I also know that there are better times ahead," wrote Heller in a Tuesday-morning e-mail to supporters. "Together we can move our country in a new direction, get Nevadans working again, and create a more prosperous future for us and our children."
Heller, the two-term congressman whose district represents virtually the entire state except for Las Vegas and its surrounding suburbs, also made clear his campaign will focus heavily on the poor economic conditions that continue to afflict his constituents.
Nevada's unemployment stood at 14.2 percent last month, the highest in the nation.
"As families across Nevada struggle to pay their bills and fight to keep their homes, Barack Obama and his beltway allies are proposing record spending that will add to America's job-killing debt from a stratospheric $14 trillion to a staggering $20 trillion," he wrote. "We cannot allow this to happen."
Early polling shows Heller on top of a string of other potential GOP rivals, including Sharron Angle and Danny Tarkanian – both of whom ran for Senate last cycle.
Republican Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki has also suggested he is considering a bid.
On the Democratic side, Rep. Shelley Berkley, Nevada's only other member of Congress, has said she is considering her options.
So tired of hearing these so called candidates blame Barack Obama for all of America's problems. I want to hear solutions and these idiots just don't get it. We are looking for problems solvers and sick of problem finders!
This guy is a Wall Street stock broker, should I say anymore.

Whatever.
Only other member of Congress? I'm sure Rep. Joe Heck (R-NV3) will be surprised to hear that. Nevada's had three congressional districts for 10 years. Way to fact check, CNN.
All these republicans blaming Obama have very short and selective memory. The people of Nevada should just say: Up Yours!
@Lynda/Minnesota – You must be from La-la land of Michelle Bachmann.
He looks like he just got off a game show. He must think the election is a game show where the winner gets to steal money from the taxpayers.
On the other hand, I want to see him debate Angle, that would be fun.
Nevadans will always vote for the ones whose ideology brings us to those republican near depressions. By the way, republican congressman Cantor tried to justify removing funds that give us Americans early warnings against hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc. It appears that republicans want to take us back to using smoke signals, but, knowing the GOP, will remove the funding for matches and wood.
The people of Nevada keep putting Reid back in so I guess they are getting what they deserve.
Will this guy appeal to the GOP's other master (other than multi-national corporations) – the Tea Party. Perhaps they would perfer Sharron Angle Part II. If it were a movie, it could be called "Return of the Dimwit."
RE: The case for "baby joseph" in Canada: In January, a Canadian Superior Court judge ruled in favor of the hospital, saying it could remove the child's breathing tube without a replacement, and issue a do-not-resuscitate order and recommendations on palliative care. This is the same type of bad medicine we will get with "Obamacare". It must be removed. This is the type of "death panels" we were being warned about.
Heller's a career politician. He's never worked at an adult job.. Beside knowing how to gather lobbyist money, the only other training he's had is as a stock broker. Great! Another one of these corporate sponsored guys. Oops! A corporation is now a person. I keep forgetting that..
Where are the jobs? Isn't this what all the others ran on? Another silver tongued devil...
This guy is such a polictical hack. He takes only safe positions within th e GOP and voted with G.W. Busk 94-95% of the time.
I a recent letter, he states he supports the "privacy" of women (a Roev.Wadw supporter? or just pandering ass?) and then goes on to suggest federal funds are used by Planned Parenthood for abortion. He knows that is BS. He is BS. personified.
Another winner!
It looks good for him no matter what. If Ensign could get himself re-elected, you can believe any one cynical enough could.
And he's off to a good start: let's cut even more so there is even less money flowing into the economy. Especially Nevada, where all the losers of the country go.
