Senior House Republican cautions GOP colleagues on shutdown

Washington (CNN) - Idaho Republican Rep. Mike Simpson, a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, cautioned fellow Republicans about calling for a government shutdown.

"My concern with a shutdown is what is our long term goal? What are we trying to achieve? If you're going to shut the government down you better be willing to achieve those goals," Simpson told reporters off the House floor. "If it is repeal Obamacare, do we think in two weeks or a month Obama's going to go – 'you guys were right, and sign onto it?' I don't think so. So you better look at what your goals are and what you're willing to accept or don't do it."

Simpson said House Republicans could push ahead with another short term spending measure to keep the government running past Friday. Senate Democrats and the President have already rejected a proposal GOP leaders put forward earlier this week that would fund the government for another week while also cutting $12 billion in spending.

House Republicans are meeting Wednesday afternoon to discuss next steps and determine whether they have the votes to pass another short term bill if GOP leaders decide they want to pursue that option.

Simpson, whose committee is responsible for drafting the specific spending cuts, said he can't finish his work until Republican and Democratic negotiators agree on an overall amount.

"Give us a number, I don't care what it is, and we'll meet it." Simpson said, adding he was anxious to move past the fight over this year's bill to get to bigger cuts in next year's budget.

"We're cleaning up the mess that was left us. How we clean it up is not as important to me as what we do with the 2012 budget," Simpson said.

  1. The Greedy Old Parasites have declared war on YOU!

The other reason the GOBP will wither and die in the next generation or two is that along with the clowns and children driving the adults away, the crony capitalists are becoming ever more transparent in their attempts to grind the poor and middle class into feudalism. They rely on cultish nonsense to sell this abusive form of capitalism while anyone with half a brain recognizes that polluters and Wall St. must be watched closely or they will kill us all.

I buy grocery to last longer than a week, is Boehner or just desperate and damn afraid of the tea baggers. George W. Bush left President Obama 2 wars and a economic mess and the Republicans never complained. I'd like to have that argument with them since they want to blame our President and the past Congress for what they are now elected to do.

Let the Taliban shut it down! Plain and simple! It's like the loser that keeps threatening suicide in order to garner sympathy. Republicans have been rejoicing at the prospect of a government shutdown for months now. Git Er Done!! Then pay the price...

The only long-term plan Republicans have is to try and get President Obama out of office. Too bad they don;t look to their history. By 2012 they will have held the Precidency for 46 of the past 70 years. During that time, what have they done?
They have controlled Congress for most of that as well. Agian, What have they done?
During their tenure, we have detroyed the middle class, lost our standing in the world as leaders and innovators. We are no longer roll models for any aspect of running a country. Schools are a joke. Our scientific research and developement while still on top is losing ground rapidly. We produce nothing because corporate greed has sent our jobs overseas.
Can we overcome our current financial problems? Yes -RAISE TAXESAND CUT SPENDING. This is a no brainer which means Congress should be good at it.
