Furlough notices arrive on Capitol Hill

(CNN) - CNN has learned that the first furlough notices are being sent out to congressional staffers, explaining to them whether they are considered essential or non-essential — and if they would be expected to come to work in case there is a government shutdown.

Come on Congress, how long have you guys known this was coming?
Easy solution...we can't afford to be the worlds peace keeper. Cut back on military spending and take care of the people in this country. And not just the rich!

I understand that, if there IS a shutdown, the military personnel fighting in the Middle East will NOT get paid. But guess who will? Yep, CONGRESS continues to draw their salary while others will not. This is the MOST egregious set of circumstances I could ever imagine. I say NOT ONE Congressperson should get one cent while others have to forgo their salaries. Any else think that's right?

A government shutdown is obviously a very bad thing which will cause potential irreparable damage to our economy. If the people in office can't stop acting like spoiled bratty children fighting over a favorite toy, it's the american people they were ELECTED by that will suffer. Hey Government, Grow up and don't let a government shutdown happen that will destroy our way of life in America.

My son is currently in the U.S. on a school trip from Canada. On Saturday morning, April 9, he is scheduled to start a tour of Washington, D.C. involving the Smithsonian museums and sites of national significance. Now when it’s too late to reverse the trip, we find out these museums and sites might close effective the precise start of the tour, because of disagreements among politicians. If the shutdown occurs, thanks to these politicians for potentially disappointing my son and other foreign students, and for wasting my approximate $1000 I paid for this trip. However, of greater importance: Is this a way to inspire the outside world’s confidence in the United States?

Please explain to me how public air traffic control is a necessary service? It's not essential to fly. Let folks drive or take a bus.

If we inconvenience the business, and disposable income travelers enough, they will cry very loud and perhaps positive action will ensue. Shouldn't airlines be affected just like the garbage man in DC, or the park range in Utah, or the Navy Seal in Afghanistan.

Of course military air controllers must stay on the job.

It's ALWAYS the little guys that get the ax first. How about, for a change, the big shots (you know the ones who aren't doing their jobs) they take the "hit" this time???

This is so silly. Conservatives and Liberals or left and right if you prefer disagree on everything in life. Republicans and Democrats will never agree on anything ever again. This country is split into two completely different ideologies: left wing progressive socialist liberal and right wing conservative neo-fascist oligarchy. This country is being ruined because we are forced to try to work things out together when we know it's impossible forever. It's time to split the country in half. One side red one side blue. We can still visit each other but let's go our own way. Time for american liberals and conservatives to divorce!

And hopefully, the cuts will begin in Medicare and that old cacklin' hag with the red hair will be the first one to "enjoy" a smaller government.

Just more fat, old, white rich racists no longer in need of KKK hoods since the GOP has made racism and class warfare fashionable again.

    Tea party, the New KKK.

The thought od a Government Shutsown- DO IT NOW.
We Americans have had enough. I believe if we can balance the budget, think of the monwy we will save. Our Government needs to realize, " If you don't have it, you can't spend it". Every person and business in the World has a budget if I don't have the funds I cut back. Mr. Obama, stop the U.S. from digging a desper hole. Please uae some common sense, that God gave a duck and run this Country like a business.

I can state with absolute certainty that our Senate and House representatives are non-essential. Why we pay these clowns to bungle the business of the people is beyond me.

Actually, leave the staffers at work. Put all legislators, regardless of which party they belong to, on furlough instead. Nothing will get done with the budget of course. But how would that be any different than what they have been doing?

Pull the plug, none of what they are fighting about matters and we know that. The shutdown will only hurt the people that will be put out of work.
The taxes and budget mean nothing to Congress except to work out who will blow what horn once the budget is passed.

FREEZE all of the full time poiliticians pay NOW until they begin working together to solve problems! It's a sad fact that the working class people who need actually need the money the most will be once again the people who suffer.. I wish the political circus could feel that pain for once!

Why doesn't the federal government take the hit in their paycheck. I bet if they took their checks away we would have a balanced budget within the week. Why should anyone work for delayed pay. I for one am fed up with all of washingtons BS.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor promised the American people today– “We will not leave town until we cut spending and get our fiscal house in order.” The Republicans gave him a standing ovation. The Democrats sat on their b*tts. Obama’s response to the latest GOP offer to keep the government running (and paying the Military)– “It’s a distraction. I'll veto it”

If the Government shuts down it's the Democrats fault. They haven't passed a budget in two years they had control because they didn't want the american people to see what their plans were. The democrats plan is to shutdown the Government and blame the Republicans... all for election results. What the democrats do not realize is that he American people are now too smart to fall for that BS.
