Bachmann assails Obama over Libya

Bluffton, South Carolina (CNN) - Addressing a crowd of Tea Party activists in South Carolina on Saturday, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann called President Obama's decision to intervene in Libya "foolish" and said the NATO mission could end up boosting al Qaeda.

"We still don't know who the opposition forces are that we're helping," the potential Republican presidential contender said at a morning gathering of the Bluffton Tea Party Patriots.

"The only reports that we have say that there are elements of al Qaeda in North Africa and Hezbollah in the opposition forces," she said. "Let me ask you this: what possible benefit is there to the United States by lifting up and creating a toehold for al Qaeda in North Africa to take over Libya?"

Bachmann, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said she was speaking carefully so as not to betray any national security secrets and said she was referring to to public testimony and news reports.

She claimed terrorists could easily gain control of Libya's vast oil wealth and wreak havoc on their enemies if Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi is removed from power.

"If Gadhafi is toppled, if al Qaeda of North Africa comes in, and they secure control over the oil revenues, then they will have a permanent source of funding to finance global terror worldwide," she suggested.

Bachmann is spending four days in the Palmetto State as she explores the possibility of a White House bid. South Carolina is one of the four states that will kick off the Republican presidential nominating process early next year.

She did not elaborate on her political plans but made no secret that she is seriously considering a run.

"I would love to debate Barack Obama," she said. "It would be a pleasure."

Bachmann also accused the president of not doing enough to halt the rising cost of gasoline, which is approaching $4 per gallon in South Carolina.

"Whose side is he on?" she asked. "I don't think he's on our side anymore."

Would you please confer with McCain to develop a consistent position. Half of the Republicans complain that he's not doing enough for Libya and the other half say he's doing too much.

Bachmann and I agree on something, I would love to watch her debate the president as well

While i don't agree with all of his policies I'm also confident he can wipe the floor with her

South Carolina is a good place for her , very little rational thinking seems to come from there!

And it would not matter what Obama did or said , she would take the opposite view. And I too would like to see her debate Pres Obama, think he would win hands down!

I don't expect CNN reporters to do any research conxcerning Bachmann's earlier statements about the U.S. involvement in Libya, but hopefully Jon Stewart and Steve Colbert will. I'll just have to wait until monday evening for the complete story.

And what exactly would this worthless twit have said if Obama had *not* intervened? That's right. "He's a wimp and a wuss, afraid to stand up for our principles." Haven't you noticed? Loony Tune republicans like Bachmann reflexively oppose each and every thing Obama does, large or small. It's an act that's getting real, real old.

I actually agree with the dingbat here. Except I assume that her reports of Hezbollah interfering are fanciful imagery.

I will literally donate $50 to her campaign fund if she can show me where to find Libya on the map without resorting to help from advisors, Wikipedia, etc. Just the general vicinity would be enough...

Every time this woman's comments make the front page of CNN, their credibility dies a little bit more.

For someone who is allegedly educated, Bachmann shows just the opposite. Methinks that ANY word that has LIB in it is fodder for her disdain and contempt and that of course, includes LIBya.

Can you visualize this woman in control of the world's most powerful military and nuclear arsenal?

Bachmann would sound a lot saner if she mentioned Yemen instead of Libya. Yemen is also unstable and has far more AQ operations in place there. So basically she knows nothing about AQ and is just trying to score cheap, reality-free points at the President's expense.

"Bachmann, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said she was speaking carefully so as not to betray any national security secrets and said she was referring to to public testimony and news reports." Really?!?!?!Never mind I'm a member of the intelligence committee, the news reported it so it must be true!

Doesn't this idiot keep up with the news. The US is not in Libya anymore. It is now in the hands of NATO.

    >"I would love to debate Barack Obama," she said. "It would be a pleasure."

You would, would ya? First steps first: If the GOP were to ever nominate you, it is more desperate than one would have thought. You bring no intelligence, no substance, no ideas or anything even close to advancing or nudging the country forward. You are a national disgrace.

The reason many of you nuts run is to rake up some cold hard cash, that your loyal, nutty followers send you... and don't forget the book deal.

As far as sides go, Ms. Bachmann is on the outside of the American mainstream.

Funny how Bachmann and her ilk had no qualms about Iraq and Afghanistan... but now that we are helping people who are actually already fighting for their freedom... they are dubious. Hmmm.. could it be because of the party in control of the White House?

Beside that half the time you really don't know what you are talking about , and the other half you LIE and twist people word around. And would like to know that being a woman yourself how can you want to stop Plan parenthood that help woman. And we both know they don't use Government Money for you claim they do. It just that the TEA PARTY want to do Is get rid of everything from the Middle Class, the poor and the OLD. Anybody that vote for a person back by the TEA PARTY must be really DUMB and Is Brain less.

Yeah, yeah, yeah the U.S. intervening in Libya is boosting al-qaeda. I guess she agrees with Gadhafi, since he said the rebels were pill popping addicts inspired by al-qaeda. Bachmann is one of the problems with America since people actually take her serious. That goes for the rest of the GOP also, maybe excluding Ron Paul.

And what does Ms. Bachmann know about the middle east? What classified intelligence does she pull her so called knowledge from? Ms. Bachmann barely understands how our Government works, let alone what the Constitution says.. what our History is, and she is allowed an opinion about Foreign policy? OH, yeah.. free country, she can say whatever she wants.. but thankfully, the rest of us can choose to ignore her...
