Boehner hires top lawyer for fight over marriage law, sources say

Washington (CNN) - House Republicans have hired a prominent conservative attorney to defend the federal Defense of Marriage Act in a pending lawsuit, legal sources say, and will make an effort to divert money from the Justice Department to fund its high-profile fight.

House Speaker John Boehner disclosed the legal and political strategy in a letter Monday to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. The Obama administration, which normally would defend federal laws in judicial disputes, announced last month it believed the Defense of Marriage Act, often referred to as DOMA, to be unconstitutional. The law defines marriage for federal purposes as unions only between a man and woman.

Further proof, Republicans should never be in charge again. These people screamed for 2 years about elected and what have they done??? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. They push these religious ideologies to keep the Christian base following them. This is no different than what they did in Bush years when they used Gay Marriage time and time again to keep their support, while they never did anything with any of it. Wake up people, this is nothing but a shell game. These things do not matter to them, otherwise they would have addressed it long's a feeble attempt to hold power and secure their corruption.

More idelogical nonsense from the party with no ideas and certainly no ideas on how to create "jobs, jobs, jobs". Instead,
they pander to their base of social conservatives (maybe 10% of the elecorate). Bottom line, most Americans do not have the fixation on the social agenda you continue to pursue and are focused on matters that impact them directly. Wake up GOP, you will need to do more that this if you want to have a prayer in the next general election.

The law is unconstitutional, but I wouldn't expect anyone in the GOP, the Tea Party or any conservative group to even know what our Constitution is. They have no respect for the rule or foundation of law. They only want their dictatorship.

Such a waste...Someone tell me when will the GOP move to the 21st Century? Over 50 percent of American can give a hoot as to what gender a person marries these days. So, wasting money on crap like this shows exactly, where this party priority is when it comes to this Country state of affairs!!

Look it up in any dictionary published before the big homosexual push for 'gay marriage" and you'll see "between (or 'of"), a man and a woman" in the definition. I'm not opposed to something akin to marriage (after all, why should only us straights be allowed to be miserable?) but they just can't call it "marriage" nor use the terms "husband" and "wife". They already got to take a synonym for "happy" and redefine it. The synonym for "miserable" (married) is ours!

I thought John Boehner ran on JOBS< JOBS>>> What happened to that promise? Get out of people's personal business and start doing the business of the majority of the working people and work with your colleges as a team to move this Country back to prosperity.
Those that can't work productivy SHOULD BE VOTED OUT.....

I don't understand how anyone can even begin to think a law is defensible that specifically calls out and distinguishes based on gender.
