Bachmann: Obama's certification of live birth 'should settle' birther issue

Washington (CNN) - After recently saying that President Obama should "answer some questions" regarding his birthplace, Rep. Michele Bachmann now appears to be changing her tune.

Appearing on ABC on Wednesday, the Minnesota Republican was pressed about the president's Certification of Live Birth, a legal document that attests to his birth in Hawaii in 1961. Some Americans, dubbed "birthers," insist on seeing the president's actual birth certificate - a document the state of Hawaii does not publicly release.

"Good Morning America" host George Stephanopoulos showed Bachmann the Certification of Live Birth - a document that's long been in the public domain - with a signature and official stamp.

"Well, then that should settle it," Bachmann said. "I take the president at his word."

Stephanopoulos asked: "So this story is over?" to which Bachmann responded, "Well, as long as someone introduces it, I guess it's over."

"It's right there," Stephanopoulos replied.

"Yeah. There you go," Bachmann said. "Because that is not the main issue facing the United States right now."

Instead, the congresswoman said, the focus should be on the nation's debt crisis.

Bachmann's words that the Certification of Live Birth "should settle" questions about the president's birthplace are different from what she's said recently on the topic.

Appearing on Fox News earlier this week with Jeanine Pirro, Bachmann said, "It's an interesting issue that has gone on for so long and it's one that the president could have solved very early on."

Bachmann continued: "All he had to do is just answer some questions and show his [long-form birth] document and then have people do an attestation that this in fact is a legal document and it's over, it's done. And I think the president has neglected to focus on answering that question for people, and that's why a lot of people still have it lingering in their minds."

In another Fox interview with Sean Hannity on Tuesday, Bachmann said, "This is the easiest problem to solve. All the president has to do is show it."

Bachmann's latest comments to ABC echo those from a few other potential Republican presidential candidates.

Last week, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney said in a CNBC interview that President Obama has passed "the citizenship test." Romney added, "I believe the president was born in the United States."

Former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty has also recently said he does not question the president's birthplace.

In a recent CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll, three out of four think the president was probably or definitely born in the country.

What does it mean when an issue that conservatives have pushed so hard on and used as a rallying cry is suddenly dropped like a hot potato? All of a sudden the "live birth certificate" is valid and there is no need to question its' veracity. The President is a legit citizen. Miraculously, overnight.

If you are a conservative then you need to stop and think about the other issues that conservative pundits and policticians have been telling you are important. Conservative voters need to question the veracity of what your ideology really does and not listen to what the far right wingers tell you what it means.

It's been settled by multiple varied news organizations for years now. The only ones who still think that there are 'questions' are those who usually fall for the lies of the angry men of right wing talk radio.

His birth certificate was examined a long time ago and the issue was settled. Bachmann is just another loony birther.

I think it is a riot that OB has kept this issue going by not showing his long form birth certificate.

So this story is over?" to which Bachmann responded, "Well, as long as someone introduces it, I guess it's over."

so, she was trying to ignore the fact that George was showing to her and still wondering aloud if it would be introduced. Dang, these people are are a trip... Just imagine a world where every penny wasn't treated with the same reverence as living human beings... Would the GOP even exist in a world like that? Probably only for religious types and bigots.
Which also leads me to think, what a small society we have become to support a party that provides a home for racists and anyone that prioritizes lust for money over people.

Why has Bachmann flip-flopped? Could it be because another right-wing nut (Trump) has passed her in the polls. I was hopping Bachmann or Palin would be the GOP/TP candidate for President. It would make it easy for the Democrats to win.

Now that the idiot agrees that Obama was born in this country, maybe we can focus on JOBS. If they would put this much effort into jobs and worry about social issues and busting unions at a latter date, they would actually stand a chance of re-election.

Thanks, Michelle. It's official The President has been GOTP certified as an American citizen. What group of high high brows. The playbook has turned a page. What's next? "But, he's still a muslim."

Some of them are starting to realize that the birther crazy train is going nowhere politically. The issue was useful politically for a while to stir up the loonies, but the whole issue just turns off most sane people. Bachmann, apparently, has decided which group she wants to appeal to.

Wow – I think she sees the polls and know this is not an issue high on people's minds. BTW – did she also see that over 40% of people who identified with the Tea Party does NOT want Medicare/Medicaid touched during the debt debate? Over 70% of ALL Americans did not want Medicare touched...............hmmmm.....................

    Flipped and Flopped.
The GOP memo is getting around. Even Jan Brewer got the message: "We've milked this for all it is worth, and it is turning against us. Time to dial it down before they think we're as crazy as the Birthers.....which we are.".

When news organizations actually reported news, she could not have gotten away with this. But since 24-hour cable news is all opinion, what she says on Fox is heard only by Foxers, who do not listen to ABC or any other "lame-stream" media. So she will continue her tirade on Fox and will now (thanks to ABC) appear much more moderate to non-Foxers. Sadly, a total win for her and loss for grown-up debate.

Notice how these "birthers" are always saying, when cornered: "Well, I take the president's word that he was born in the USA." You don't have to "take his word" about it: The certificate of live birth is a legal document. It's good enough for getting a passport. It was good enough for the Republican-majority Supreme Court, who refused to hear a birther-brought legal case. It's like John Stewart said: You don't have to accept "gravity" because Newton said so; you accept it because it's fact.

Ahhhhhh I see she finally got the Carl Rove Memo. He has been telling them to drop this and she finally listened. It's pretty sad they have to make things up to try and win an election. Can you imagine the things that could have been accomplished if the GOP played fair and did what was right for the country, instead of what helped the GOP.

It would appear that the GOTP Pied Piper ( your guess is as good as mine. Rove? ) has changed the tune and direction. Too bad the conservative masses will still allow themselves to be lead by the nose and told what to think and believe. What a group of high brows with low foreheads.

  25. Make our day please!

If Bachmann was a Salmon she would be swimming downstream to spawn. She just does not get it. How much of a dufus is she? Oh wait, she has already answered that question many times.

You really, really have to wonder about the intelligence of the district that keeps voting her in. What exactly does she do for them?
