Fact check: Trump's voting record

NEW YORK (CNN) - Donald Trump's affirmation that he's voted in every general election disagrees with actual voting records, according to a spokeswoman with the New York City Board of Elections.

“I voted in every general election,” Trump told CNN affiliate NY1 by phone Friday. “I have records that I voted and so does the Board of Elections. … I signed in at every election.”

However, voting records obtained by the board of elections show that Trump did not vote in the 2002 general election, according to Valerie L. Vazquez, director of communications at the board.

The records also show that Trump skipped at least three presidential primaries and two mayoral primaries over the past 25 years, Vazquez said Friday.

Vazquez has found voting records by Trump for only two party primaries – the 1989 GOP mayoral primary and last year’s GOP primary for several statewide races, including governor and U.S. Senate.

Vazquez said she was able to obtain the voting records using both Trump’s voting bus cards, used prior to 1992 to document a voter’s activity, as well as through the BOE's electronic records database, used from 1992 to the present. Both the bus cards and electronic records provide the ballot time and whether it was cast on site or by absentee vote. Records also showed Trump has changed his party registration three times over the past 20 years.

Vazquez was confident that her records are complete, saying there is not a loophole that would hide a possible vote.

But when asked by NY1 Friday about the discrepancy presented by information from the election board and his claim, Trump said, "You're going to pay a big price because you're wrong."

A call to Trump for comment was not immediately returned.

CNN's Susan Candiotti contributed to this report.

Damn people, read the article before posting. It clearly states "voting records obtained by the board of elections show that Trump did not vote in the 2002 general election". So he said he did, so he either lied or should check his own record before making statements.

If I don't like the candidate of my party's choosing – I won't vote. If I did, I'd have to vote for the other party's candidate, which I certainly don't want to do. So, by not voting, I took my vote from one guy, but had I voted, I would have taken his vote away and added on for the other guy. Not voting is a voting decision, and by itself does represent a vote.

You are something else, CNN. I see you are already campaigning for Obama. You are attacking Donald Trump under the assumption he will be running for president. It would have been nice if you had revealed all of the lies from the Obama campaign in 2007 and 2008 as well as the lies from the Obama administration in the last 2 years. Obviously you are a liberal news organization interested only in re-electing a Democrat.

By the way, who cares if Donald Trump didn't vote when he said he did?

Look, this is so obvious. The GOP had no choice; they HAD to find someone to ntake the embarassment of Palin away a little. You have to admit, Trump IS making Palin look a little better every time he opens his mouth.

Either that or he is really Banksy and this is all an elaborate prank.

Let's not play this game. He is this year's Palin–irrelevant to the political process.

I am happy that evidence keeps coming up showing that TRUMP the CHIMP is really a COOT. This does not look good for conservatives.

No one needs to help DT discredit himself. – he's a master. I find it truly amazing how many people – like DT himself – haven't the slightest idea how they appear to others. A small number of us have decided to believe whatever he says, and the rest of us seem to see him more as a character in a sitcom – marginally amusing entertainment.

man, oh man...this network has continued to lose respectability on a daily basis for the past 18mos. I'm embarrassed that I've looked to them for substance for this long and continued to search for it daily. goodbye until you've earned the respect back.

For all those saying primaries are not general elections...you're right. Although I would suggest that voting in a primary is far more important to get the candidate you want on the general election ballot. But the article clearly states that he didn't vote in the 2002 general election (presumably for congressional, statewide and local candidates).

BFD although he was found to skip one gerneral election Primaries are no big deal I hate the guy but really..who cares? Need to focus more on his constant flip flopping, how much steel he imported from China, how much marble he imported from Italy. His bankruptcies, the way he quits his marriages, his lack of knowledge on Constitutional issues, his tax returns, his arrogance of epic proportions. Come the first debate he will no longer be relevant. This guy was only lucky his father Fred was born before him

This is pathetic!!! Are the bankruptcies, multiple marriages, changes in views and voting records the only thing you can dig up on Trump?! If so, you have already lost the smear battle you have waged against Trump!! By the way, primaries ARE NOT the same as general elections. How many Americans haven't experienced financial problems? How many Americans have been in multiple relationships? How many DO NOT vote 100% of the time including in primaries? How many have changed positions as time went on? How many of us have stretched the truth? CNN, you need to come with something better than this mess!

Trump is a true representative of his Party. The GOP. He has learned to cheat and lie in his Business dealings and understands that politics is also a game to be played. However,he does not realize there must be personal truth as well. What can we do? That's the easy part. Boycott his businesses,Hotels, his advertisers and the has-been celebrities on his TV shows. Buy nothing with his name or anything associated with him. New Yorkers BEWARE!! His birther doctrine is as deeply disturbed as he displays his sad psychotic rambling on TV.

Trump has the same narcissistic tendencies as Palin. "Don't criticize me or you'll be sorry. I've never done anything wrong." Yet their only campaign strategies are to try and destroy President Obama's character, questioning his birth, his religion, his motives, his friends, his wife, his parents, his integrity, etc. What losers they are.

Obviously most of you can't read. The article clearly says that he did not vote in the 2002 GENERAL ELECTION which is in conflict with his assertion. There is additional discussion on primaries, but the 2002 election issue is still a discrepancy from Trump's assertions. I have voted in every general election since 1972, sometimes absentee when a business trip took me away from home on election day. Its not that hard to do and Trump is going to have to learn to be a little bit less loose with facts. Additionally, for those of you who think he is a self-made man, do some research. His father left about a half billion dollar estate when he died.

Who cares if he skipped voting, it's not like we had any great choices. I think Obama is scared to run against someone who REALLY is one of the most powerful people in the U.S. maybe 1 of the top 10 in the world. A list Obama would not be on, even as President.

Once again, a significant number of Tea Partiers miss the point. It's not about whether or not he voted, it's about lying that he did when he didn't.

As a private citizen Trump does not have a voting record. Only government legislators have voting records. This is a garbage article.

It is amzaing how many people are so desperate to bash CNN that they just reveal themselves to be unable to read. There are at least a dozen posters who accuse CNN of being liars (or Democratic propaganda) based on the claim that (in the words of one poster) primaries " are not general elections," and therefore that "his statement is true as stated." The article very clearly stated that in additional to missing multiple primaries, he also missed at least one general election. If you are going to bash an article, take the time to read it.

And for all those who say, "who cares, lots of people skip some elections," the big deal isn't that he missed an election, it is that he very clearly and repeatedly lied about it. This seems to be a personality trait of Trump – he makes bold definitive statements that turn out to be true. That does not seem very presidential, and he deserves to be called out for it.
