CNN Poll: Does Trump have the right stuff to be president?

Washington (CNN) - Most Americans don't think that Donald Trump has many of the traits they typically look for in a president - including honesty, empathy, and an ability to manage the government, according to a new national poll.

But a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Friday does indicate that the public says the billionaire businessman, real estate mogul and reality TV star is intelligent, tough enough to handle a crisis and not a typical politician. Trump has been flirting with running for the White House and says he'll announce by June whether he'll launch a bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

Eighty-two percent of people questioned in the poll, which was conducted last weekend, before the news of the killing of Osama bin Laden, say Trump is intelligent, with 67 percent saying he is not a typical politician. Fifty-seven percent say he's tough enough to handle a crisis, 51 percent say he can get the economy moving and half of those questioned say he's likeable.

But only 37 percent say Trump can manage the government, 34 percent say he's honest and trustworthy and 32 percent say he's someone they admire. Only 27 percent say Trump has the right experience to be president, 26 percent say he's in touch with Americans and 24 percent say he shares their values.

Even among Republicans, who would be the first to vote for him if he runs for the GOP nomination, he's not getting rave reviews.

"Republicans are generally considered more pro-business than Democrats or independents, but most Republicans don't admire Trump or think he has the right experience to be president, and most GOPers don't think Trump shares their values or is in touch with ordinary Americans," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

According to a CNN poll released Thursday, nearly six in ten say they have an unfavorable view of Trump. The survey also indicated that Trump trailed Obama by 22 points in a hypothetical 2012 general election matchup.

"Slightly more Americans think Trump can get the economy moving than feel that way about President Obama, but the president has a major advantage over Trump on honesty, likeability, and skills at managing the government," adds Holland.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted April 29-May 1, with 1,034 adult Americans questioned by telephone. All interviews were completed before the president announced that bin Laden, the founder and leader of the al Qaeda terrorist network and the man responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks, was killed by U.S. forces in Pakistan. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

    Trump hasn't done anything noteworthy to warrant people voting for him. Trump hasn't made any life or death decisions, Obama has.

    Our economy SUCKS, He is one person I would trust him with my money any day. He is financially savvy and a smart man. We need and person like him in office to make good financial decisions in order for our economy to recovery. I would VOTE for him in a second.

    Donald "The Chump" is nothing more than an ignorant blowhard. He has only one agenda, Trump. He will lie, cheat and or steal for his own gain. He is one who gets his jollies hearing himself talk and if he doesn't like what you are saying it's always "Cuse me", "Cuse Me". He is of the mind set that he is a smart man when in reality his hair isn't even smart enough to lay right on his empty head.

    The guy is a a-Clown! He has big talk, but no substance. He going to save the US from their finanical woes when he had 3 companies that went bankrupt due to his greed. He isn't even a self made man or millionare as he wants to believe. His Daddy was the one that began the Trump Empire. Old Man Trump was worth over $800 Million at the time of his death in 1999. Trump is just a mooch and a loser!

    It is amazing how these idiots have selective memory. Bush and their precious Reagan made this mess. They helped no one but the rich. And the poor uneducated people in the south shows that they can be sold anything. i have some swamp land to sell to you.

    Anyone with a brain knows Trump or Palin have no chance of being president. Yet CNN reports on both of them as if they are real contenders. For god sakes Trump is more liberal then conservative so he would never get the republican nod. Secondly after all of the Bin Laden stuff dies down, the fact will still remain that more and more jobs are being lost every week. Even when there is good news like today where more jobs are added, it doesn't change the fact, that more and more are being lost and shipped out of the country. This administration has to do something to stop the mass exodus of jobs leaving for Mexico and other countries if they want Obama to be elected again. You can't constantly attack corporations and small businesses and expect them to stick around or survive. CNN was even trying to downplay the bad unemployment news the other day by stating the unemployment numbers were skewed because of spring break. That's just ridiculous. Wishing things were better is not going to make them better. CNN and other Liberal news stations need to start holding this administration accountable for their bad policies. Things are getting very bad. It's time to stop pretending.

    I don't want to be judgemental at the moment about Trump. I need to hear him debating and from there I can make my judgement.

    WHAT IS THIS INSANE OBSESSION WITH AMERICANS ABOUT BEING "TOUGH ENOUGH"?

    Just successfully competing in the American capitalist environment is more than enough to toughen up anyone. Americans are born competing and they toughen quickly, therefore I'm not worried about our leaders being 'tough enough'.

    I'm more concerned about our leaders having 'good judgment and wisdom'. George W. Bush was 'tough enough', but he sincerely lacked intelligence, understanding, and good judgment.

    And birther-candidate Donald Trump, much like Bush is 'tough enough'; but the recent antics of this blow hard Trump is clear evidence that he severely lacks wisdom and judiciousness.

    Why does CNN waste money on conducting a poll for Trump? The man cannot even be elected Dog Catcher, despite his claim of wealth.

    Wrong answer. Bush and the Repubs had bankrupt the US since the Mid 2000's. Clinton left a surplus and Bush, Cheney & company took all that money and used into an unnecessary war in Iraq. Bush was the one that was always running to China for handouts. Major Banks was going under on his watch.

    So this must be the poll Donald was lying about to John King !! Most have us already knew that the majority are quite aware that Trump is no where close to Presidential material and is just a sideshow that really helped Obama out. Trump is dead wrong on China and OPEC and combine that with several bankruptcy scams and it is clear that he would ruin any progression the country has made. Never forget that Trump wants to invade other countries and steal their oil and that is the dumbest thing ever said by a CEO, he has diminished the value of his Dads company greatly in the past two months, not very smart at all.

    But how does this jive with his "leading from behind" in Libya? How is our country served by interjecting ourself into their internal political matters?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    This is an example of how weak intellectually and socially some of us have become. One rational comment distorted for a political bumper sticker to be repeated when ever the wind blows with the hopes that someone, anyone, will follow them. Typical nonsense garbage that comes from feelings of inadequacy and being irrelevant. A bunch of sissy-boy ego maniacs with inferiority complex. This is how Breitbart makes himself feel worthwhile. Very sad people.
    Trust is how we select presidents. How much trust we have in the candidate must be balanced with how much trust the candidate can evoke around the world.
