Dallas (CNN) - The Republican National Committee raised more than $6 million in April as Chairman Reince Priebus works to pay down the party's staggering debt load, CNN has learned.
The party organization, which began the year $24 million in the red, paid off $1 million in debt in April and reduced its total debt to $18.9 million.
The RNC now has $5 million cash on hand as Priebus seeks to rebuild the committee's traditionally vaunted get-out-the-vote program - which languished under the previous chairmanship of Michael Steele - ahead of the 2012 presidential election.
Priebus himself contributed $5,000 to the party and is spending around five hours a day on the phone talking to donors, an RNC official told CNN.

They can't even manage their Party budget and yet they want to make you believe they can manage the country's!!
Seemsa like the Rethugs never stopped partying while average Amerikuns had to tighten their belts due to THEIR fiscal excesses and negligence.
America, land of the free and home to these dummies.
Are they going to Hawaii again to talk about fiscal responsibility?
Has anyone looked into "prius" closet yet?
Weall now. Isn't that special? The party that wants the administration to toe the line on the federal budget can't even hit the mark on their own budget.
They can't even keep their party's finances in order, how on earth can they get the country out of the hole they dug the country in to for 8 years.

On the other hand, the Democratic Administration and Senate will not even try to manage the country. They just fight every attempt to manage spending and instead want to raise taxes. They increased the country's debt by 40% in their first two years, accomplished very little except making Wall Street and the banks wealthier, and now their answer is to raise taxes?!?! Really?
Ain't this a oxymoron. I'd like to see their expense report. If they want to run the country, let's see how fiscally responsible they are with their campaign donations.
I'd like to get $1.16 credit for every $1 I paid on my debt. Why do republicans get the extra credit?? Something smells about their book-keeping (or lack thereof).
I thought big pharma or the oil industry would just cut the RNC a check and wipe out the debt, but maybe those payoffs got into the pockets of Republicans and never made it to to the RNC.
Republicans put the country in debt so bad and scream that it is the current administrations fault, but they cant keep the books straight for themselves.
This is why they replaced Steele. He wasn't managing the finances and raising enough money to get the job done. Looks like Priebus is getting the job done wonderfully. Republicans are off to a good start! Keep that ball rolling!!
It's all Steele's fault but Steele doesn't see it that way because he'll blame it on President Obama while kissing the feet of the Republicans as they continue to use him up.
I cannot understand why the NRC doesn't use their very own preferred tried and proven method for reducing their debt. Their method is always to reduce taxes for the US Government so why don't they give discounts to the top 1% of their contributors? They don't seem to believe that by lowering the income from their contributions they will pay off the existing debt. I think they should practice what they preach. I guess the best thing about being a Republican is that you don't have to be concerned about being embarassed over the lies you are caught in.
Four and the Door: The country's debt increased because certain items were conveniently left off the budget like two wars, for starters. Additionally, I wouldn't call saving this country from TOTAL collapse a MINOR accomplishment. The fact that you can't stand who actually did the saving while your boys were standing on the sidelines hoping for hell to completely break loose does NOT change that fact.
I see reform was short lived with you. More's the pity.
Here's another fact for ya: Republicans CANNOT balance a budget, they are closet spenders.
Now you'll probably have to go back to therapy.
You'd think the RNC would be flush with bribe money from the oil companies to ensure that their tax breaks continue. Maybe the bribes go directly to the Congressmen and senators...mostly GOP but a few Dems.
The Republicans raise so little because all of their fat cat, rich friends are cheap. Everyone knows that the reason the rich are rich is because they're cheap which is not such a bad concept but at least support the people who got you there. The Democrats have a lot of poor who have always been the biggest spenders due to living pay check to pay check which is why it was genious of Barak to do the $5 donation. 5 million people donating $5 = $25,000,000.
Hmmm dinners at $5000 pp or $5 pp internet donations, go figure.

this is why we are where we are, philosophy and facts are 2 different things, how can you increase debt by 40% in 2 years? Debt was at 11 trillion pre obama and is14trillion post, now even more fact, it was 5 trillion when W and the GOP took complete control.
Ahhhh yes . . . the "fiscally responsible" Republican Party. What a bunch of clowns.
And YES Four and the Door, ONE of the answers IS to raise taxes!.
Four and the Door: you should really attempt to get a CLUE. You continually embarrass yourself on here with your sophomoric, uber-partisan analyses that have little basis in fact or sound reasoning.
You seems to think the [D]s alone increased the country's debt after Obama got elected. The FACT is, some significant portion of that debt was structural, having been guaranteed by the spending bills that the free-spending Bush and his [R] congressional lemmings passed long before Obama came to office.
Now, that portion of the new debt that can be attributed to new [D] spending bills was correctly put in there to stabilize this country's economy in ight of the Great [R] Recession. Obama, and that new spending that you and your fellow Teatards mindlessly screech so much about, are the ONLY reasons that this country is not now debilitated by a full-scale [R]-caused DEPRESSION.
It is the height of HYPOCRICY that you yellow-bellied drama queens now rail-on about the VERY spending that is solving the problems that YOUR policies CAUSED. I too think it unfair that they raise MY taxes - they should be raising the taxes of only those that voted for the [R] mess during 2000-2006....it is YOU people who caused this mess!.
Four and the Door,
Still a blind man I see..... oh, and have you found a bill the Republicans in the house have passed about JOBS?????
Didn't think so.
@Foor and the Door
The majority of Americans know why the country is in the debt crisis it now faces. Let me remind you of the facts. Again
2008-2009: GWB had a projected $700B deficit, and then they added another $700B TARP.
2009-2010 Obama had a projected $700B deficit, unemployment removed $300B in revenue, and Stimulus added $500B.
2010-2011 The Republican controlled Congress wrote this budget.
Do they have a spending problem or a revenue problem?
