Senate rejects GOP oil drilling plan

Washington (CNN) - The Senate rejected a Republican measure Wednesday to expand offshore oil and gas drilling in U.S. coastal waters, signaling a continued partisan stalemate over energy policy and, more specifically, how to respond to rising gas prices.

The bill was defeated in a 42-57 vote. Sixty votes were required for passage.

"Elect Republicans in the Senate ( more than 60 please!) and the Whitehouse and this countries oil producing problems WILL be solved. Another reason to throw ALL of the Democrats OUT in 2012."

Good luck selling that ... or your idiotic talking points.

Thanks for nothing Democrats. I just love the prospect of $5 per gallon gas on into the future. Tell these nincompoops that the oil companies won't drill where there's no oil.

  3. Great Vote

It is amazing. We don't want to put a big debt burden on our Childern, but we are sure will to use up all of their resources. Kinda like an oxymoron. For all of those morons who are concern about the debt. I am talking about all the republicans too

"Obama gave the oil companies more than enough permits to drill for oil elsewhere, but the oil companies are not drilling".... That’s great there are permits, but if there is no oil to drill, then the permits are worthless.... If Obama gave permits where there is oil, like Alaska, then there would be drilling. Remember when Clinton vetoed the bill that would have opened up the Alaskan North slope to 1.4 million barrels a day..... He said it wouldn't have an effect on oil prices for some years to come. That’s 140 million dollars a day we are sending overseas.... thanks dems....

People who are against drilling expansion need to turn in their cars, homes, computers – all electronic equipment,Cd's and the myriad of other products produced with fossil fuels. Either walk your talk or shut up! We have vast oil reserves just waiting to be harvested. How stupid we Americans are. We sure wouldn't want to have an economic boom with a resource we possess have the infrastructer to harvest safely, is needed by the rest of the world, and would change our postion in ALL foreign policy. Fools elect fools to lead.

Good! We don't need dirty oil and coal, we need clean renewable energy. Drilling will not lower gasoline prices.

There is NO free market in oil, period. In just about every oil producing country in the world, the production is a government-run operation in which the government sets supply limits (Venezuela, Syria, Lybia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Norway, Mexico), and they negotiate with each other to set them below market levels to keep prices from plunging (OPEC). They can only afford to do this because they are practicing SOCIALISM when it comes to oil production and don't depend on profits directly for their paychecks; no cartel of private entrepreneurs can go a week without one of them backstabbing the others, and this is a GOOD thing as competition keeps things affordable. Every time there is an oil shortage, the relatively small supply and few producers allows speculators to buy up everything and resell it at bloated prices with no competition, another common effect of socialist price controls. This happened CONSTANTLY in the USSR with its epidemic of shortages of everything even thought it was illegal to resell things there. The fact that everyone blames "capitalist greed" for this just demonstrates that ignorance rules the world.

  11. Democrat Fools

The message is very clear as to which party is ultimately responsible for the US dependency on foreign oil. Democrats are simply obstructionists in these times. This vote only secures my vote in the upcoming elections for those who are willing to put America first. We can no longer afford to have other countries put America at risk economically or militarily. We need to do everything we can to become self sufficient. Oil isn't enough either, but we can and should build more refineries and drill where it makes sense. Not where Democrats only want us to. Oil, Natural Gas, Air, Solar and Nuclear must all be utilized to break our foreign dependency. Democrats don't want to do anything... Much less put up wind farms because it will spoil their elitist view from Cape Cod.

HA HA HA, at our current consumption we would burn through all our domestic oil in a few years. Maybe all the flag waving patriots would like to trade their 13mpg SUVs and Trucks in for something more fuel efficient (or stop creating demand for these absurd vehicles all together) to help reduce our consumption so we can at least attempt national energy sustainability?

to those of you who wail for green energy, have you ever thought about why it is not being used en masse by now?

Oil drilled offshore goes into the oil companies' oil supplies, along with oil drilled out of other parts of the world. It doesn't go into a special "discounted for America" stash. We need alternative energy.

It's great to see hysteria continues to triumph on both sides of the aisle. We regulate these corporations to oblivion, raising the operating costs so only the largest players can compete, then we have to subsidize them with tax dollars to keep fuel affordable. Well, Deepwater Horizon has already demonstrated that regulations don't accomplish squat and that when there's an accident, the government is powerless to respond. So, let's put the two bills they voted down over the last two days and axe BOTH the regulations and the subsidies, the influx of small competitors won't let anyone charge customers for the balance, and if there's a spill, let the liability lawsuits – NOT regulations – bury them, those are what they are really afraid of. Free market economics people, stop knocking it because we HAVEN'T tried it.

Help for struggling and unemployed American workers gets cut off without a thought – but the billions in welfare payments from the American taxpayers to the oil companies must continue. I guess even the most ignorant should be able to see who the republicans are working for.

    "Drill baby Drill"

As if that means that we would have more oil.
We only get a fraction of the oil that is drilled in the Gulf.
By far the lions share is sold on the open market to other nations. The notion that drilling offshore means more oil for our consumption makes as much sense as Saddam Hussein having had anything to do with 9/11

Neither would we receive any additional taxes that extra oil in the gulf would produce as we are probably the one nation that does not tax big oil like others work.

20,000 more jobs? You are 11 times more likely to die at work working on rigs in american waters as you would anywhere else on the planet, where restrictions and rules ARE imposed and applied.

Heck, big oil doesn't even pay a royalty to the citizens of this country to whom the oil belongs, for them taking our oil to sell on the open market to china, india.

At least change the slogan to" Drill for China, Drill for India"

Drill Baby Drill won't lower your dependance on foreign oil not one drop nor reduce gas prices by a 1/4 penny. It will make oil much wealthier than it is, which means more republican campaign contributions and a continued corrupt GOP doing whatever their corporate masters desire.

It is a circle jerk that must be snapped and it will.
