Barbour: Media sound bites make Gingrich seem like 'a jerk'
Washington (CNN) - Now that he's officially out of the race for the GOP presidential nomination in 2012, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour is candidly sharing his thoughts on the field of potential candidates.
During an interview with CNN Chief National Correspondent John King Thursday, Barbour said that announced candidate Newt Gingrich was "thoughtful and smart" but appeared to be a "jerk" in the press.

Republican wins runoff spot for Los Angeles-area House seat
(CNN) - Republican businessman Craig Huey has defeated Democratic California Secretary of State Debra Bowen for the second spot in the July special runoff election to replace former Democratic Rep. Jane Harman, according to updated vote results released Thursday. Huey will face Democrat Janice Hahn, a Los Angeles City Councilwoman and the top vote-getter in Tuesday's special primary election for California's 36th district House seat.
Huey was an underdog in this heavily Democratic district, which is located entirely within Los Angeles County. His second-place finish can largely be attributed to a crowded Democratic field of five candidates who garnered a combined 56.7 percent of Tuesday's vote.

Here comes Huntsman
Hanover, New Hampshire (CNN) –Jon Huntsman plunged into the presidential waters Thursday, hitting New Hampshire with the kind of swarm of news cameras, journalists and expectations normally seen buzzing around a more established campaign.
In front of a small GOP crowd in the town of Hanover, the former Republican governor of Utah and, more recently, U.S. ambassador to China under President Barack Obama tried to downplay expectations.

Trump cancellation draws wrath of Iowa GOP
Washington (CNN) – The Iowa Republican party chairman canceled a major fundraiser Thursday and blasted Donald Trump for breaking his commitment to speak at the June event.
Trump was scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the Lincoln dinner. But on Thursday he informed the party he was canceling his appearance. Iowa Republican Party Chairman Matt Strawn didn't hold back his disdain.

President closes day with fundraisers
Washington (CNN) - For the third time this week President Barack Obama ends his day by raising campaign cash.
After giving a major address on the Middle East earlier Thursday, the president is the main attraction at two evening fundraisers. Obama headlines the Women's Leadership Forum's 17th Annual National Issues Conference at the Grand Hyatt in the nation's capital, and then attends a dinner at a private residence.

Congressional leaders reach deal on Patriot Act
Washington (CNN) - CNN has learned that Congressional leaders have agreed on a tentative deal that would extend the Patriot Act for four years.
The deal to extend the expiring law was sealed today by Speaker John Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, according to senior Democratic and Republican sources.
The move would largely take the issue off the table for the next election by extending the law well beyond November 2012.
Daniels to be star attraction at Republican fundraiser next week
Washington (CNN) - As Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels mulls whether to run for the GOP presidential nomination, he will be making a trip to Washington, DC next week to boost Republican coffers.
Daniels will be the star attraction at a fundraiser next Wednesday, May 25th, for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, according to an invitation obtained by CNN.

Libyan rebels pronounce Obama speech 'good enough'
(CNN) - Libyan rebels praised President Barack Obama's Thursday address on the U.S. role in the Middle East, while some Syrian activists expressed disappointment that Obama didn't push harder on their embattled ruler.
In Benghazi, the heart of the Libyan revolt against longtime strongman Moammar Gadhafi, a rebel leader pronounced Obama's speech in support of democratic movements across the region "good enough."

Palin: Schwarzenegger's behavior is 'disgusting'
Washington (CNN) - Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin slammed former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger late Wednesday over the recent revelation that he fathered a child with a household employee while married to Maria Shriver.
Palin called his behavior "irresponsible" and "disgusting" when asked to weigh in on the scandal during an interview on Fox Business.

CNN announces January debate in South Carolina
(CNN) - CNN and the Southern Republican Leadership Conference (SRLC) will host a Republican presidential town hall debate in Charleston, South Carolina just weeks before voters weigh in at the polls in that state's pivotal primary.
"On behalf of the Southern Republican Conference Board of Directors, we are very excited to be working with CNN on this important presidential town hall debate," said Ed McMullen, chairman of the SRLC board of directors. "We look forward to hosting our 2012 presidential candidates, and showcasing their conservative ideas."
