
(CNN) - Republican businessman Craig Huey has defeated Democratic California Secretary of State Debra Bowen for the second spot in the July special runoff election to replace former Democratic Rep. Jane Harman, according to updated vote results released Thursday. Huey will face Democrat Janice Hahn, a Los Angeles City Councilwoman and the top vote-getter in Tuesday's special primary election for California's 36th district House seat.
Huey was an underdog in this heavily Democratic district, which is located entirely within Los Angeles County. His second-place finish can largely be attributed to a crowded Democratic field of five candidates who garnered a combined 56.7 percent of Tuesday's vote.

Hanover, New Hampshire (CNN) –Jon Huntsman plunged into the presidential waters Thursday, hitting New Hampshire with the kind of swarm of news cameras, journalists and expectations normally seen buzzing around a more established campaign.
In front of a small GOP crowd in the town of Hanover, the former Republican governor of Utah and, more recently, U.S. ambassador to China under President Barack Obama tried to downplay expectations.

Washington (CNN) – The Iowa Republican party chairman canceled a major fundraiser Thursday and blasted Donald Trump for breaking his commitment to speak at the June event.
Trump was scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the Lincoln dinner. But on Thursday he informed the party he was canceling his appearance. Iowa Republican Party Chairman Matt Strawn didn't hold back his disdain.

Washington (CNN) - CNN has learned that Congressional leaders have agreed on a tentative deal that would extend the Patriot Act for four years.
The deal to extend the expiring law was sealed today by Speaker John Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, according to senior Democratic and Republican sources.
The move would largely take the issue off the table for the next election by extending the law well beyond November 2012.
Washington (CNN) - As Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels mulls whether to run for the GOP presidential nomination, he will be making a trip to Washington, DC next week to boost Republican coffers.
Daniels will be the star attraction at a fundraiser next Wednesday, May 25th, for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, according to an invitation obtained by CNN.
