Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) - Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota more or less announced a presidential bid in Iowa on Thursday.
Her voice did, at least.
That’s because Bachmann, held up in Washington by a key House vote on the Patriot Act, wasn’t actually at the GOP fundraising banquet she was supposed to headline in Des Moines.

The source would not discuss the meeting in any detail and refused to speak on the record because the meeting was private.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The U.S. House followed the Senate on Thursday in voting to extend three key provisions of the Patriot Act scheduled to expire at midnight, sending the measure to President Barack Obama to be signed into law.
By a 250-153 vote, the Republican-led House agreed to extend the expiring provisions of the law passed after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. They deal with roving wiretaps, the tracking of alleged "lone wolf" terrorists and the ability of law enforcement officials to obtain any records they deem relevant to an investigation after securing an order from a federal court.
FULL STORY(CNN) - Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann said Thursday that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's decision on whether she'll seek the GOP nomination in 2012 won't affect her own thoughts on running for the presidency.
During an interview on CNN's "John King, USA," Bachmann said, "My decision will be independent of whichever candidate gets in. I have great respect for Governor Palin, I consider her a friend, and if she gets in, she gets in."

WASHINGTON (CNN) - A bipartisan group of senators is asking President Barack Obama to change the current "insensitive" policy of not sending condolence letters to families of service members who commit suicide.
A letter signed by 11 senators - 10 Democrats and one Republican - and sent Wednesday urges the president to "take immediate steps to reverse the long-standing policy of withholding presidential letters of condolence" to families of troops who killed themselves.

Washington (CNN) - Just weeks after the killing of Osama bin Laden, Congress came closer than ever before to forcing the Obama administration to come up with a plan for a significant drawdown of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
The vote, on an amendment to the annual defense authorization bill, failed 204 – 215, but that tally was surprisingly closer that even its supporters thought it would be. Twenty-six Republicans joined 178 Democrats to support the measure.

Milford, New Hampshire (CNN) – Who’s afraid of Sarah Palin?
Apparently not presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty.
After an appearance at an electronic contract manufacturer in Milford, New Hampshire on Thursday, the former Minnesota governor was asked if he is concerned that a Palin bid could "big-foot" his White House hopes.
