Pawlenty running Iowa campaign from Romney's old office

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) – During the 2008 presidential race, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney planted a flag in Iowa and counted on a win in the first-in-the-nation caucus state to - he hoped - vault him to the Republican nomination.

This time around, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty is doing similar early spadework. He already has a team of field staffers in place and has recruited a blue-chip roster of prominent Iowans to back his campaign in hopes that a top-three finish in the caucuses punches his ticket to New Hampshire.

Pawlenty: I'd sign Ryan budget plan as president, if I couldn't have my own

Milford, New Hampshire (CNN) – One day after refusing to answer whether or not he'd sign House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan's controversial budget plan, Tim Pawlenty said on Thursday he would sign it as president – if he couldn't have his own plan.

The comments from the Republican presidential candidate go a step further than what he said Wednesday, when he spoke at a conservative think tank and answered reporter questions afterwards.

"Today I can tell you that I fundamentally believe that the House of Representatives is in play and the Democrats can win a majority in November 2012," Rep. Steve Israel of New York told reporters Thursday.

Rand Paul sounds off on own GOP leadership

Washington (CNN)–Freshman Republican Sen. Rand Paul, who angrily squared off with the top Senate Democrat Wednesday, turned his sights on his own party’s leaders Thursday, accusing them of preventing a vote on his amendment to the Patriot Act that would require government investigators to get a court order before reviewing people’s gun ownership records.

The stand off had threatened to cause key post-9-11 anti-terrorism surveillance tools to lapse for several hours past midnight when those provisions of the law are set to expire.

Orszag: Panic needed before debt ceiling boost

Washington (CNNMoney) - A former White House budget chief said Thursday that Congress won't reach a deal to raise the nation's ability to borrow until the financial markets panic.

Peter Orszag, who used to run the Office of Management and Budget, said he believes that Congress has no appetite to raise the debt ceiling - just as they had no political will to pass the 2008 bailout package to banks to save the financial system.

Palin launching multi-city tour amid 2012 buzz

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) – Not two days ago, Sarah Palin was all but written off as a possible presidential contender by the national media and Republican insiders who considered the field of 2012 candidates to be settled.

Now, fittingly, one of the country's most unpredictable political figures is preparing to prove them wrong.
