Todd Palin on possible 2012 campaign: 'This family has been tested'

Dillsburg, Pennsylvania (CNN) - Todd Palin told a handful of reporters Tuesday that his wife will decide on her own whether or not to seek the presidency. He is not pushing her one way or the other, he said.

But he emphasized that if the former Alaska governor does choose to embark on another national campaign, he and their children will be ready.

"This family has been tested," Palin said. "When people talk about how she was just plucked up out of Wasilla, you have to look at her career. Every step in her career is another step for the family, and we were prepared.

"These kids grew up around the mayor of small town," he added. "Local politics is in your face every day. It's not like you get on a plane and fly to D.C. or Juneau."

The normally-reserved Palin opened up about his family for a few moments after he and Sarah pulled over their "One Nation" bus at Coffee Express, a charming café in the central Pennsylvania town of Dillsburg.

Palin said there is a list of "pros and cons" that the family is weighing. "But this country, we have to get back on the right track," he said.

Echoing his wife's earlier declarations that the presidential field will take time to settle, Todd Palin said she has time to make up her mind.

The race is "a long ways away," he said - a calculation that is sure to be disputed by other Republicans who are already laying presidential groundwork in key early caucus and primary states.

"It's up to her what she decides to do," Palin said. "I am not pushing her either way. It's her decision."

He said Palin has no plans to invite reporters onto their tour bus for gab sessions, in the style of John McCain's 'Straight Talk Express' bus from the 2000 and 2008 presidential campaigns.

"It's a different scenario," he said. "She's employed by Fox."

The Palins began day three of their much-hyped bus tour by ducking reporters to tour the battlefields at Gettysburg before making their way toward Philadelphia.

At the café in Dillsburg, they bought a few mid-morning cups of coffee and visited with a pair of locals who were caught off guard by the swarm of media that trailed them into the tiny shop.

She also took several questions from reporters, as she has done at nearly every stop on the tour, including one about ethanol subsidies, a controversial topic she will surely confront if she competes in the Iowa caucuses.

Fiscal conservatives oppose the subsidies an expensive federal handout, but Iowa's agriculture-fueled economy has depended on them for years.

Palin said she opposes energy subsidies, a statement that would put her at odds with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the putative frontrunner for the GOP nomination, but in line with another candidate, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

"I think that all of our energy subsidies need to be re-looked at today and eliminated," she said. "And we need to make sure that we're investing and allowing our businesses to invest in reliable energy products right now that aren't going to necessitate subsidies, because bottom line, we can't afford it."

    @ Four and the Door....

You REALLY can't be serious with that statement you just made. I guess only liberals say negative, hateful and nasty stuff, right? Heck Sarah Palin herself not only called Obama a pal of terrorist, said one time he had no "cajones" and even made fun of Michelle Obama on occasion. How do you think their children should accept that? Hopefully their kids don't turn on AM radio and hear a Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, or Hannity show and hear some of the things their father is called on a daily basis. It just amuses me how some people like you only see and hear what they want.

  3. Limbaugh is a liberal

Yes, I am sure it is Palin that has been torn to pieces by the media, and nobody else... Unless you count the media's several year-long obsession with Obama's associations with a has-been terrorist, a crazy pastor, his muslim father and schooling, and of course the birther movement.
If you can't take the heat, STOP CALLING THE PRESS TO COVER EVERY MOVEMENT YOU MAKE, Sarah! 'I want more attention! Look at me, look at me, LOOK AT ME! Oh, wait, you are also going to cover my background as well? That is sooo unfair...'

Did everyone notice that the Palin supporters can not spell or put a complete sentence together? These are the people voting for her and beleive only what faux news, Rush Limbaugh and the rest of the hypocrites tell them. They can not read or think for themselves. This woman has no clue as to how the world turns. She does know how to make that money, I give her that. As for anything else forget about her. She is dumb as a box of rocks.

It’s funny how those few people who actually support Palin always cover up her ignorance, lack of education and racism/bigotry with references to her ‘family’ and her ‘patriotism’.

Sarah Palin and her hateful racist followers are what is truly wrong about the United 2011.

Just because a person wants to serve in politics ( and has received by the way hundreds of millions of votes already in the 2008 election)

More idiocy from the "one child left behind". Check your facts on just how many votes were really cast in any election... the TOTAL for both candidates was barely over 100 million.

Next time, try opening up a book or a newspaper.

One more thing you supporters, please let her know that there is no way that she can cram 100 years of history, politics and common sense into her brain in time for the 2012 election. She will definitely need to write notes all over her body to keep up with the issues. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Palin is such a media hog that she is sucking the air out of the campaigns of Romney, Bachmann, and Pawlenty. The other top tier candidates are making a big mistake if they don't start finding fault in Palin.

    @ Four and the Door:

How would you feel if someone had yelled " Kill her!" while Obama made a campaign stop, and he just smiled and went on talking? Did she ever denounce the comments ( like "uppity"), the emails where the president and/or the First lady morph into an ape? Why did she choose to make the Gabby Giffords shooting about her? Even if you remove all the clumsy, stumbling, ham-fisted mangling of the English language, the childish comments, snarky remarks and outright lies (death panels), there is the question of her competance. She hired a lobbyist while mayor, left Wasilla in debt, quit the Oil/Gas Board of Alaska, quit the governorship after 30 months, used the office to settle personal scores instead of creating meaningful policies: can anyone point to a single accomplishment in her years of puclic experience besides getting the oil companies to double the subsidy check? Are the schools in Alaska better? Is the state less dependent on the Federal Government than before? Is there anything that could be remotely described as a " Palin Doctrine" on anything other than self-promotion? She does a disservice to conservative women by never finishing any job she has started, and by her reveling both in the limelight and a limited ability to display what she knows, an ironic situation for a one-time Communications major.

I love Sarah. She is ensuring Obama's re-election. And, cashing in at the same time.

"Sarah is right on the issues. She's making the media look like the fools they are!"

Exactly what issues is she right on and which issues are you talking about? Has anyone heard Half Gov. Palin make an issue statement that really meant anything? All she seems to say is "I'm an American". News flash, we're ALL AMERICANS! In terms most people can understand, Hal Gov. Palin has a 22 caliber mind in a 357 Magnum world.

Aww... Come on now Rudy.. Don't confuse the political hack "Four..." with facts. Nearly 60 million votes for McCain MUST be the same as hundreds of millions for Palin. He must get all his information from the "Fakes News" channel...

Well, at least they finally got the helmets part right. Now they just need their bibs and sippy cups.

"Just because a person wants to serve in politics ( and has received by the way hundreds of millions of votes already in the 2008 election), this is no reason for the trash liberals have thrown at them. "

You will avoid noting, of course, that it's not because she "wants to serve in politics." It is because she is a proven liar/fabricator who sows discord by regurgitating vitriolic talking points and baseless demagoguery and is not qualified on any level...not educational, not from any proven knowledge base, not from her performance record (quitting a governorship?), not even in terms of speaking hold the office of POTUS. You want to blame someone for "angry liberals" spewing hateful things about her? Start with her and her own behavior and statements and then move on to the "news" media that is so in love with her that it can't stop forcing lame, substanceless articles down everyone's throats ad nauseum. She's an unmitigated disaster on every single objective level you can possiblyl test a candidate for public office and the ONLY thing she passes on is the test for the ability to garner attention for herself and her ambitions...and she wouldn't even have that if it weren't for John McCain maknig the single stupidest decision of his life. She gloriously represents everything wrong with our political system and political culture and deserves, as does the "news" media for continuing to prop her up, every iota of derision we can level at her.

Psst, Governer. Ethanol is made from corn. We do not want to see the price of corn (one of the foundations of our food prices) become as volatile as the price of oil. Ethanol subsidies help to stabilize the price of corn and the impact that sudden increases in corn futures would have on so many food products. Until we find alternative forms of energy and regulate the speculation on energy commodities (people buying the product with no intention of ever accepting delivery of the product on some future date), the so called 'ethanol subsidies' are probably a good thing that we want to keep.

liberals expose themselves when dealing with Palin. crass, intolerant, hateful, hypocrites. i do find it amusing when the rare christian dem plays the Jesus card on repubs, as if he opened abortion clinics and opposed teaching a man to fish for himself. He was neither dem nor repub, anyone who says otherwise is willfully ignorant. now, let the crass jerry springer crowd pile on Palin, heaping endless attention on someone they hope would go away hahaha, totally logical. i just wish they had new, original, and funny criticisms about her. u guys are just boring now. too predictable. try harder

I find your comment amusing considering we are on year three of the non stop insulting, vilifying and demeaning of President Obama and the First Lady. Todd and Sarah Palin don't have a clue about being tested. Besides, she flunked the test when she quit her elected job as Governor of Alaska.
