John Edwards' mug shot released

(CNN)–Former U.S. Senator John Edwards, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and campaign law violations in early June. His mug shot was obtained by CNN following a Freedom of Information Act request.

The plea came after a federal grand jury indicted him on six counts, including conspiracy, issuing false statements and violating campaign contribution laws.

A grand jury has been investigating whether money given to support Edwards' mistress, Rielle Hunter, by benefactors of Edwards should have been considered campaign donations, a contention Edwards' team has disputed.

A plea deal between the two-time presidential candidate and the U.S. Justice Department fell apart over the the Department's requirement that Edwards serve jail time. Wanting to have "minimal" impact on his two younger children, the former senator refused to agree.

CNN's Ross Levitt and Susan Candiotti contributed to this report.

Wow, those are some charges. What's the penalty, life? At least some dangerous criminal will be off the streets. We can sleep easy now.

Edwards messed up and he should pay for his mistake. If he did use funds he should pay it back with intrest. I supported him all those years back and I want to know where my money went. He will pay ultimately for his sins in the end, during judgement day.

Where is Senator Vitter's mug shot??? Soliciting a prostitute is illegal in the state of Louisiana and the District of Columbia, so why has he not been charged? yes, I know he has been re-elected, that is between him and the people of his state. But the law is the law, and don't you think it was bad form for Senator Vitter to be calling the "DC Madam" while he was on the Senate floor? Don't forget the whole diaper fetish, please. Yes, Edwards is probably guilty and we are certain that he is a creep, but the law is the law for all of us, not just some of us...

I can't believe he's smiling in the picture after doing wrong things especially to his Late ex-wife Mrs. Edwards. He's a cruel man. He's the lowest of the low.

Johnny -which is his real name, by the way, is smiling. How arrogant. And, to think that this garbage bag was close to being a heartbeat away from the Presidency of the United States.

It seems that the gifts given were given to his mistress not him but her and not for his campaign. Not cool. I hope justice prevails.

I support you, John Edwards! You are still an honorable man. Hold your head up high. We all are human. You have nothing to be ashamed of.

Best quote so far from Michelle Malkin's Twitter: "I swear, he still looks like he's trying to sell me swamp land even in a mug shot."

What makes Edwards think he can be believed after repeatedly lying. He makes me sick-knowing his wife was terminal he put his selfish desires above his children, his wife and his supporters. I have no sympathy for him. I hope when they find him guilty they give him the maximum!
