BLITZER'S BLOG: On taxes, both sides are exaggerating

(CNN) – Words in Washington are important. President Obama and the Democrats always say that "millionaires and billionaires" can afford to pay higher taxes, especially when spending cuts will impact middle class families and the elderly. Given the nation's high unemployment, House Speaker John Boehner and the Republicans counter by always saying that this is no time to increase taxes on "job creators."

You won't be surprised to find out that politicians on both sides are exaggerating.

REALLY!?!?!?!? On what planet and since the bimbo quitter from AK showed up in 2008 you have been panting after her like a dog in heat!
There's no exaggeration when the republikans want to take away "entitlements" that we have been paying for all our working lifes. What they are exxagerating is that the rich are not going to create jobs (they haven't in the last 10 years with their tax cuts so why know when they want the President to fail and be a one term President); they are not going to have to declare bankruptcy, or lose their homes, or their cars or not be able to put on the table for their little darlings and they will still be able to invite all their rich friends who fly in on jets to their lavish parties while the rest of us, seniors, poor and the vahishing middle class scrape to get by.

From Sen. Obama’s Floor Speech, March 20, 2006:

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now d...epend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here.” Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

Obama in his own words still holds true today.

"ndividuals earning $200,000 a year and families earning $250,000 a year are not necessarily “millionaires and billionaires.” President Obama and the Democrats would like to see their federal income tax rate increase from the current 35% to 39%, where it was during the Clinton Administration."

Ummm, it's not quite fair to resort to the $200K/$250K thing. Schumer and friends proposed only raising the tax rate only on actual millionaires and the GOP still wouldn't bite. Of course, selective memory is the "news" media's bread and butter, so carry on.

"Obama in his own words still holds true today."

Sure do. And since raising the debt ceiling is a matter of paying for PAST appropriations and borrowing, and the PAST appropriations and borrowing is vastly the GOP's doing, I'm willing to agree with it as long as blame is appropriately aprcelled out in pro rata shares.

However, someone should probably let you guys know you already lost this one in light of McConnell's epic blink today. Boehner and company are now doing their best to try to shift the messaging to "the Dems shouldn't be allowed to hold the debt ceiling hostage," but it's a paltry effort. The clean bill will be on Obama's desk by Aug 2.

We've heard the tea-baggers loud and clear for a long time. They will take this country down if that's what it takes to make President Obama a one-term president. The people of this country don't matter to the republicans/tea-baggers. They will protect those loopholes for big oil and the wealthy and send us into a depression to do it.

    WE HEAR YOU !!!!

"Job creators" – now that's a laugh. They're creators alright. Creators of unemployment in record highs. Nothing else.

  12. The Obama Recession Continues Unabated, Obama Depression on the way

Individuals earning $200,000 a year and families earning $250,000 a year are not necessarily “millionaires and billionaires.” President Obama and the Democrats would like to see their federal income tax rate increase from the current 35% to 39%, where it was during the Clinton Administration.
Since when did Obvama and the Democrats EVER tell the truth? They didn't tell the truth with Obamacare and they lie now. Honesty is not a quality known to exist in Democrats. Weiner. Need I say more?

this is one democrat that hopes the GOP holds their ground but not because they are right to shut down the goverment its because they are so wrong! defaulting on our depts is going to raise heck with the core value of the american dollar. the rich base their wealth one that american dollar and it would do my heart good to see the republicans put one into their rich bubbies break it off and devalue their wealth buy the same amount of decline that the averge american home owner has taken! maybe we could get lucky enough to just faise out the american dollar and replace it with a new currency. go for it you bunch of stupid right wingers.

Don't you just love all the silly, drug addled libertards who think Obama will only tax the rich more? Remember this is the man who said that if we give a trillion dollars to the corrupt union bosses, unemployment would not rise above 8%. We did and it did . This is the same Kenyan village idiot that created Obozocare another financial disaster coming our way soon, that will require more taxes from the 50% of us (non Obama voters for sure) that actually pay taxes, have jobs and can pass a drug test.

WHEN WILL YOU ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS of the Republicans?? – 1 – If tax cuts will cause an increase in employment why has the extension of the Bush tax cuts failed to produce any job growth? 2- WHY would a 2% increase in taxes on a person that makes $250,000 a year (resulting in a $5,000 added tax) in any way effect whether they would hire or fire a person that they would need to be pay on average $30-$40,000 a year as opposed to POSSIBLY effecting the salary that person would be paid? (Mind you that most large companies are paying much more than that to all their employees.) 3- If that would effect whether a corporation would hire or fire someone Is Corporate American actually withholding the hiring of people in order to effect the outcome of this debate? Witness the huge increase in corporate cash sitting on the sidelines.

Stop being a WUSS Blitzer. I'm tired of you and every other meally-mouthed TV host that wants to say "both sides are at fault". When watching football, I hate when the referees call "unsportsmanlike" penalties on both sides. It's the emptiest gesture in sports. You are attempting to pull the journalistic equivalence of that.

If the Republicans want the press to ding the Democrats, then they'd better OUTPERFORM the Democrats. Until that time, either CNN gets the courage to call the GOP out for their obstructions, lies, selfishness, and unpatriotic behavior. The Dems are far from perfect but right now, the Republicans are 5 times worse.

You serve no useful purpose if you fall into Sarah Palin's "Lame Stream Media" trap and manufacture equal outrage for both parties.

OK Blitzer (and all the other ANALysts) why don't you call them out on their exaggerations instead of just glossing over every lie they tell you? Scared to do YOUR job?

We are not stupid - your job depends on ratings - get people angry. You've done it. WE WILL VOTE AGAINST EVERY REPUBLICAN/TEA-BAGGER IN 2012!!!

I would truly like to see what would happen to congress if they could not depend on the money they make, or the free benefits they get. Let them try to survive on what we are trying to do to make ends meet. Strange, those on social security have not seen a cost of living raise is a couple years, but congress had one, or two. I would like to see them exist in todays world trying to feed a family of six, with the prices going up every week, when all you can earn is nine dollars an hour. Why only that pay, you may ask. Because the high paying jobs went bye bye when the economy did. Try finding a job trying to get even 75% of what you were making. Do any one of you have any insight, any compassion, to what is going on in the real world? I am ashamed to even say what men and women I voted for, none of you deserve your position, or our respect.

    – – – – –

Now, let's think about two examples of leadership failure.

One: Bush took a surplus from Clinton and turned it into a deficit with tax cuts funded with money borrowed from the Chinese. He REDUCED REVENUE. Two: Bush waged TWO wars [under FALSE pretenses] without paying for them. He INCREASED SPENDING. Think about Obama's words with under those historically accurate circumstances and he's exactly right.

Now it appears you want to imply that Senator Obama's words make President Obama a hypocrite. If so, your thinking is flawed for it is not simply the necessary act of raising the debt ceiling that is the failure of leadership but rather the steps that preceeded it by Bush.

To undo the steps that Bush took that led to the US raising the ceiling 7 times under Bush [whereas Clinton didn't need to in his second term] President Barack Obama is calling for Congress to join him in being a leader; TO INCREASE REVENUES & CUT SPENDING. The opposite is what got us into the problem under President #43. Seems like common sense for #44 to do the opposite.

Obama won't be happy until the country is bankrupt and becomes more like a third world country. I really hope that he gets to eat his peas in 2012 and a new President gets elected. We need a adult to take over soon to clean up the mess he has made.
