Carney: There has to be a compromise

Washington (CNN)– Despite rhetoric to the contrary, congressional negotiators recognize the need to raise the federal debt ceiling and that "there has to be a compromise" in deficit reduction talks with President Barack Obama, White House spokesman Jay Carney said Tuesday.

"Sometimes there's rhetoric put out there in public that doesn't necessarily match what has often been constructive and very productive conversations in meetings," Carney told reporters.

"There is no alternative here," Carney said, adding that the path will be challenging but "we'll get there."

The problem is that, in Republican-speak, compromise means "do it my way". In short, they are more willing to let the country go down the tubes than compromise – contrary to all their flag-waving bluster.

No, Opie. There doesn't need to be a compromise.

Here's how you manufacture a GOP "spending problem":

Like most people, you have a family to feed, mortgage payments to make, car payments, school loans, property taxes to pay, utilities bills, etc. etc. etc., all of which are fairly stabilized, fixed expenses that increase slowly year to year based on inflation, whether you have another baby, whether you put an addition on the house etc.

Yet you wake up one morning with a bright idea to permanently satiate your need for power and prestige, so you get ready for work and then walk into your job, schedule a meeting with your boss and say "you know bossy-poo, how about you give me a promotion and more power around the office and in exchange, I'll let you pay me much much less and do whatever you ask of me no matter how ridiculous or abhorrent? I'll be your go to man for the dirty work that makes you more money." The boss, of course, says "ummm, duh, yeah...done deal." So, you find yourself in a guaranteed position of power around the office with a boss who asks you to do all the dirty work...firing people, laying them off, telling them they have to take a pay cut or lose their job...maybe even some subtle sex or race discrimination around the office or in your hiring, etc.

Then you go home to your wife and children and say, "I'm sorry family, but I simply needed to have that promotion and the power that went with it by promising my boss that I would be his mindless automaton lackey and take a huge pay cut if he'd just promote me and keep me in a position of power forever. So, now we have a "SPENDING PROBLEM" my dears, and we're going to have to move out of the house and into a studio apartment, and probably sell one or both of our cars. You kids are going to have to skip going to college and become janitors or farm labor. And wifey-poo, I'm sorry, but you're going to have to sell all your jewelry, and we're not going to be able to help take care of our parents now that they're elderly. They'll just have to find a way to survive all on their own or die quickly. But hey, at least I've earned myself a guaranteed position of power. You can all brag about daddy's influence at work."

Yep. There you have it, a GOP manunfactured "spending problem."

republicans raised the debt ceiling 7 times under Bush. Not a peep from Fox News. Barely even made the news. I wonder what the hold up is now?

Republicans don't believe in compromise. It's their way or the highway. They've got this lame excuse that we can't increase taxes because during the lame duck session of 2010 democrats when along with these scumbags and extended the Bush tax cuts. It's not like they wanted to do it. Just as the republicans were holding the START Treaty and DADT repeal hostage, that's what they're doing now. They should be brought up on charges of TREASON!!!!

How to SAVE Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, PBS, NPR and the military, defense and homeland security budgets while CUTTING government spending, debt and present tax rates without causing inflation or high interest rates:
Create GOOD PAYING American JOBS with GOOD BENEFITS for American citizens by REPEALING ALL RETAIL SALES TAXES & replace the lost revenue with an IMPORT TAX/tariff on IMPORTED LABOR & MANUFACTURED GOODS. INCREASE the USA FEDERAL INCOME TAX STANDARD DEDUCTION from $5700 (2010) to $15000 for AMERICAN CITIZENS. INCREASE the INDIANA STATE EXEMPTION for non-dependent adults from $1000 to $5000; if disabled, increase to $10000. In addition, ALL AMERICAN CITIZENS over the age of 55 should have their TOTAL STATE EXEMPTIONS INCREASED from $1000 to $10000 and when they reach the age of 65, increase the exemption from $2000 to $15000; if their total federal AGI is less than $40,000. ALL standard deductions and exemptions should be adjusted for inflation. COLLECT a STATE EXPORT TAX on NATURAL RE-SOURCES/COMMODITIES such as coal, oil, natural gas & grains.
REPEAL ALL Business & New Development/Construction TAX INCENTIVES such as tax abatement, tax increment financing, grants, deductions, credits, tax free bonds, earmarks and/or ANY other CORPORATE WELFARE that SHIFTS Business & New Development & Construction COSTS & TAXES (without IMPACT FEES) to other taxpayers that EXPORT AMERICAN JOBS to foreign countries and/or that create POVERTY WAGE AMERICAN JOBS. OR, require these Corporate Welfare KINGS & their Businesses & New Development & Construction to pay a LIVING WAGE, MINIMUM WAGE of $15/hour with good benefits (parent and one child; and adjusted for inflation). COLLECT MANDATORY IMPACT FEES (IN code: 36-7-4-1300, only infrastructure today); but, expand the code to collect impact fees for schools, libraries, parks, police and fire.
Where are the TEA PARTY endorsements for these strategies?

As long as repugs think our President and the dems will get the blame, there will be no compromise.Repugs don't care how much they harm America, as long as the dems get the blame.

Debt and spending didn't matter until Obama became President.

Ant to you who think President Obama raised the yearly deficit, it was $1.5 trillion the year he took office. The result of Bush wars, tax cuts, and unfunded programs. Cutting government, during a recession, has a lot to do with the low job growth we are seeing.

Folks – the republicans are protecting wealthy and big oil.

Exxon (just one oil compan) is making $5 million per day PROFIT - that's pure profit after all deductions for everything.

Despite the ludicrous pronouncements three-and-a half, our balance sheet problem was caused by, and can only be fixed by, addressing revenues and costs.

Bill Clinton established a sustaining trend of 3 STRAIGHT YEARS of record budget SURPLUSES [at a time when the top income tax rate was 39%]. These surpluses were $88B, $122B, & $230B in `98, `99, `00.

Republican Bush cut income tax rates this reduced revenue to the Treasury and we began borrowing from China to fund the shortfall. Said another way, Bush borrowed Chinese money to give out tax breaks. This, as Former Fed Chairman Greenspan has said, was a rookie financial mistake.

Then, once he had put us in the red with these tax breaks benefitting millionaires and others, No 43. increases SPENDING by starting not 1 but 2 UNFUNDED Wars and now we are running deficits. Pretty straightforward and easy to understand.

Solution Part A: Cut spending – ESPECIALLY Defense which is $300B HiGHER than it was in 2001. That saves us $3 TRILLIOn over 10 years.

Solution Part B: Repeal the Bush tax cuts – which over the past decade HAVE NOT created jobs. That reversal of Bush will bring us $424B each year or a whopping $4.2 TRILLION over the next decade.

Just by undoing the GOP`s 2 signature initiaves in the last 10 years will put $7.2 TRILLION in our bank accounts.

Or independents can embrace the revisonist, "word-smything" of @ Four and the Door and the ignore these clear facts & figures.

Independents – go for the substance, hang out with the adults in the room.

FACT: Without meaningful cuts in spending now therre will be no urgent need to cut anything in the future or at least until the next debt ceiling raise if we don't do ourselves in before that.

  17. Rev Mkell,

In 1979 we we had a government shut down or at least missed a 120 million dollar payment and the interest rate that the Gov. payed when up by 0.6%! Just think what it would rise on a default of the entire Government! Before the the old people on SS lose their money in a government shut down we should stop paying congress and their staffs!

Someone should explain the meaning of compromise to this administration.
For Obama to say that he will veto any bill that does not has his demands included is not compromise.

There will be no compromising from the republicans. It's either their way or the highway. They will not be happy until all the poor and elderly have all died off. Republicans have long considered these groups to be a drag on their economy.

According to Cantor and Boener...the Republican idea of compromise is simply saying "Yes" to raising the debt ceiling as is done on a routine basis, no matter who is in charge of Congress. That's it??? That's all the Republicans will do??? Yet the Dem's cave yet again...with nothing in return.

This administration is in full panic mode now. They just dropped the Social Security Nuke bomb even though they are the ones who decide who gets paid and who doesn't if we can't borrow. I think even the media won't be able to save this guy this time.
