Focus of debt talks to narrow without deal by Friday, White House says

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama and top congressional leaders met for a fifth straight day Thursday as the White House said the negotiators will have to shift their focus to increasing the federal debt ceiling if they fail to make significant progress by Friday toward a comprehensive deficit reduction deal that would cut spending and raise taxes.

White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters the same thing Obama said at the talks the day before - Friday is the deadline to decide whether a broad agreement on debt reduction is feasible at this time.

These negotiations go to show that Weeper boehner has no control over his party whatsoever. Eric Cantor is underminig him and making him look like a fool. I bet over their golf game, the President and the Weeper discussed these negotiations turning out this way and they probably have a contingency plan in place.

Let's face it. Obama is maneuvering to continue his runaway spending, and the GOP is committed to stopping it. That means total deadlock, and no solution is possible.

That simply means no one is willing to move to center, on anything. The country is going down the tubes, period.

Obama "Don't call my bluff", "I will not yield", "I don't care if I loose my Presidency over this, I'm not going to agree" - sounds like Obama won't compromise. That means it's on him now. Shame he's so stubborn.

Political wrangling – no; that's normal. Obama and the Democratic party are the worst thing for Washington!

We are being "Weinered" by Obama and all of the Democrats in Congress.

"Weinered" = represents exactly what Obama and the Democrats in Congress are – LIARS. The Democrats will stand there and lie thru their teeth to achieve their agenda, no matter what it costs or affects.

While I believe that there are "good, honest" elements within the Tea Party that truly want to cut spending (without increasing taxes), I can't help but feel that some on the right are WAY MORE EAGER to see this president fail, than to help Washington reach some common ground on the country's desperate budget woes. I truly hope that these folks are not putting their biases, ahead of country (but then again, many of these guys would prefer to listen to rich lobbyists, rather than to the voice of the American people – and those are two different voices)!

Obama called for Republicans to compromise on either their insistence that a debt-ceiling hike must be matched dollar-for-dollar by spending cuts or on their opposition to any kind of tax increase, Cantor said.
I knew Obama would be fighting spending cuts. It is really odd in this situation that he does not understand that they need to happen, but he lost touch long ago and reality will not hit until 2 years from now when he is sitting at home in Chicago figuring out what just happened.

Our President should stop the bully tactics immediately. Also, using senior citizens has human shields to protect his presidency is a sign of a failure of his ability to lead this country to greatness- like other dictators.

The Republicans will make as much political Hay with this right up until the last minute. The problem is, that might be too late.

They will risk this country to gain some political ground with their radical base.

It these people were in the private sector with this behavior, they would lose their jobs!
    They should in 2012.

Good ol' mitch: "the United States must avoid a default that would be "bad for Republicans."" Aren't you people who elected mitch proud to have such an honest man?? He doesn't even pretend to care about the USA, or the voters.

    "bad for Republicans"

Oh, yeah, and lets not forget that we must make sure "Obama is a one-term president". Keep the priorities straight.

And to all the repugs who made him your Senate leader, you are no better.

WHAT ABOUT THE USA?? The people? Our exemplar standing in the World?

"no one wants to rattle the markets"

Any question about who the repugs work for?

Radical base saying not to raise taxes?!?! Okay then, include in that radical group Larry Sumner, Obama's Chief Economic Advisor in December who said the same thing.

Do not capitulate Mr. President! The GOTP is trying, yet again, to un-validate our vote for you, and you by extension.
NEVER before in the history of this country has this come to pass, but now that you are our duly elected President it is more important for themto fulfill their ONE goal, that beign to make you a one-termer.
They have no other goal but to see you out the door in 2012 and if that means imploding the country then so be it.
Hold firm sir, this too shall pass.

"And he said to me, 'Eric, don't call my bluff.' He said 'I'm going to the American people with this,'" Cantor quoted Obama as saying.
You are right no other President would be made to sit through their bullcrap. It is personal for them sir. They don't care about God and country, they care only for themselves, their pockets and their Big Business pupett masters.
Bring it to the American people sir. Oust the domestic terrorists. They have been operatiing under cover counting on your sense of discretion and dignity not to let YOUR country know what they are really about.
Call them to the mat, you have NOTHING to lose and only the support of rational Americans to gain. Americans, by the way, that have seen and suffered the treatment that these disrespectful eejits have heaped on you as soon as you became the President-elect. We've been waiting to see you go off on them, or at least giving them a little of what they've been so blatantly dishing out to you. The day has finally come.
We Americans stand with you Mr. President.
    Let 'er RIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
