Veterans groups summoned to White House on debt ceiling impact

Washington (CNN) - Veterans advocacy groups have been called to the White House for a late afternoon meeting Tuesday to be briefed by Obama administration officials on the impact to veterans if Congress does not pass legislation raising the debt ceiling.

"We were notified late last night of the meeting," says David Autry, spokesman for Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Autry and several other veterans advocacy groups say a growing number of veterans are worried their disability check or other benefits could be cut or withheld if the debt ceiling crisis is not resolved.

Oh please, I just heard on the news that a Veteran's hospital was closed by this very own government to cut down on cost. Who closes a Veteran's hospital to cut down on government cost?

Why not cut down on government salaries, goodies, trips, dinner parties hosting the elite Hollywood stars Tom Hanks, Beyonce or sports parties hosting Jennifer Lopez, etc???? Give me a break, this government is more into spending money on entertaining Hollywood stars than anything else.

Of course, fans of these Hollywood stars won't complain because they like Hollywood stars in the White House, truly these Hollywood fans could care less about a Veteran's Hospital shutting down.

"Is it any wonder why businesses aren't hiring with Obama CONSTANTLY talking about how THEY are going to have to pay for the Democrat's out of control spending because "it is only fair". Our economy will NEVER improve as long as these socialists control the Senate and Whitehouse."

Yes, well, Democrat Class, be my guest and keep protecting the businesses you are so fond of. I, myself, am having a difficult time imagining how extremely difficult it must be for big business to even begin considering hiring. Afterall, one can't have too many billions to live on, can one? Silly me for thinking that jobs are being pushed onto the back burner in leiu of GOPers quest to win, not only a GOPer super majority in Congress, but the Whitehouse as well. Best to keep those protecting GOPer interests in charge economically, yes? How else to keep Obama's poll numbers down than to keep the economy in a faltering limbo? GOPer priorities being such as they are, you understand?

I don't think the President is authorized to determine what gets paid and what does not. I read the Constitution to indicate that all spending is originated in the House.

Besides, I don't think the automated software can handle filters being applied to determine what gets paid and what does not. It's an all or nothing shot with the automated systems. This work would have to be done by hand, by people who could get furloughed at some point after a default.

Veteran’s advocacy groups have failed at the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico when they do not answer to federal agencies as the FTA. The veterans should be worry on their disabilities checks. Specially the veterans at the territories of tne United States that they do not have representation.

I`m sure the punks in the GOP will whine about how the President is "scaring old people and our heros in uniform". The fact is, the President at least owes these people the straight story. The GOP was counting on the apathy of the American voter all the while screaming about "the will of the American People". How`s that working out for ya` Mr. Boehner?

This is the cold hard reality of voting for the Tea Party Republicans. Independents, please take note at what dysfunctional [GOPTP] government has brought us.

The President is calling on EVERYBODY, and EVERYBODY is responding.
Phone lines jammed since last night to State reps. People showing up at Representatives offices today demanding that Medicare and Social Security be kept intact. We need the Seniors to make their presence known and felt as well, and college students.
    YES WE CAN!!!!!!!

The GOP never should have politicized the debt ceiling issue in the first place - SHAMEON THEM!! The debt ceiling has always been a routine, administrative thing (it is simply allowing us to pay the bills we ALREADY have, not authorizing anything new, which is why it has never been a problem in the past). Shame on the GOP for causing this huge problem. I will not be voting for a single Republican for ANYTHING in 2012. First, the GOP ignores jobs and focuses on conservative social issues and then they ignore jobs and threaten to cause our country to default on its bills!! Ridiculous! I am behind President Obama all the way and he has my vote in 2012.

Veterans are only one of the groups of decent loyal Americans who are getting hurt by Republican stonewalling. They need to stop being blackmailed by the teaparty and worrying about 2012 primary challenges and do the right thing for the country.

Oh please, I just heard on the news that a Veteran's hospital was closed by this very own government to cut down on cost. Who closes a Veteran's hospital to cut down on government cost?
You just don't shut down a large hospital overnight. It takes years. The decision to shut down Walter Reed was made several years ago under the Bush administration. Recall that they were closing VA hospitals left and right to cut costs to fund their "War on Terror". Obama fought to restore funding to VA hospitals, with limited success against Republican opposition, who felt that the public would blame Obama when time came for the facilities to close.

The truth might sometimes be scary, but cannot be referred to as a tactic, scary or otherwise. The man spoke the truth.
You've got a helluva nerve talking about scare tactics after your cohorts were the authors of "Senior Death Panels".

Agree with fair is fair. Is he going to tell them they are rich and if they save money for retirement, he wants it to give to the corrupt union bosses and the people who can't get jobs because they can't pass drug tests and the lazy who just want to stay at home get their checks and watch their 54" inch flat screen? This is the most corrupt, incompetent, inept union toady the liberals have ever stolen an election for. Must be a real bunch of addicts that respond to CNN Ticker.

This is disgraceful. All this in the name of hate for the color of a persons skin. My God have these people no shame?
This is EXACTLY what this is all about S.
Never in the history of our country have we experienced such entrounced blatant unwilligness to compromise even on those things that they were originally FOR.
The Republican's motivations behind this shameful episode CANNOT be denied, or misconstrued: they want President Obama to FAIL and they are more than willing to risk the demise of our country to achieve it.
What they are not counting on is that we as Americans will not allow it. We are answering our President's call to action until this issue is resolved, and we will answer his call to action again in November 2012.
Rest assured Republicans, your shameful terroristic, unpatriotic, unchristian actions WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN.
This too shall pass.....but you will be held responsible.

Is there ANYTHING that this buffoon HASN'T done to freak out the markets or scare people? What next, is he going to have new born babies taken from the hospital to parade them around to claim they will be endangered? And maybe some 1st graders too, claiming they will starve? This clown is truly pathetic. I can't believe somebody would have voted for this loser.

It is a disgrace that the Republicans are not willing to negotiate in good faith, but instead hold the American Economy and checks to Veterans as hostage. If this was not the situation, then why not just raise the debt ceiling, then negotiate with the Democrats rther then use this self made crisis to put leverage on the Democrats.

So veterans who are you going to vote for in the next election? What is absolutely clear is that the Democrats care about veteran’s getting their checks and the Republicans do not. Republicans are liars and can not be trusted to do as they promise.
