House vote on GOP debt plan delayed

Washington (CNN) - House Republicans called off a vote Thursday on Speaker John Boehner's plan to raise the nation's debt ceiling while enacting sweeping cuts in government spending, but the possibility remained that the measure could come up on Friday.

The delay in voting on the proposal revealed a deep rift within the GOP that could undermine the party's latest attempt to avoid an unprecedented national default and stave off potential economic catastrophe.

Israel at forefront of race in Weiner's old district

Washington (CNN) - With the special election to replace former Rep. Anthony Weiner less than seven weeks away, Mideast politics continues to brew as a central issue in one of the nation's most Jewish congressional districts.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Connecticut, a high-profile Jewish lawmaker, weighed in with his support Thursday for the Democratic nominee, David Weprin, in a race that's pitting two candidates against each other on who's a stronger friend of Israel.

BLITZER'S BLOG: Obama's chief of staff is confident there will be a deal

Washington (CNN) – White House Chief of Staff William Daley is still optimistic that some sort of deficit crisis deal will be worked out by Tuesday's Treasury-imposed deadline. But he says he's not so certain about the future of America's AAA credit rating.

In an exclusive interview with me at the White House, Daley said, "The four leaders of the Congress have said that the debt ceiling will be extended" and he's "confident that they will come together."

Palin to Congress: Remember your values (and what I said last November)

(CNN) - Sarah Palin reminded Republican freshmen members of Congress Thursday of the promises they made during their 2010 campaigns and encouraged them to remain true to their fiscally conservative values as Congress debates an increase to the debt ceiling.

On her Facebook page, the former Alaska governor reprinted a letter she sent the then-newly elected members in November 2010 that called on them to tackle the deficit and entitlement programs to "avert a fiscal disaster."
