Bachmann: Debt impasse is not an emergency

Washington (CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann again brushed off warnings from leaders in both parties that the country would face disastrous economic consequences if the government fails to raise the debt ceiling by next Tuesday.

"I do not believe for one moment that we will lose the full faith and credit of the United States," Bachmann said Thursday during a question-and-answer session at the National Press Club in Washington.

Bachmann, a House member from Minnesota, has been a staunch opponent of the debt ceiling hike for months, saying the move poses no threat to the markets or to the American public and would only give President Barack Obama license to increase government spending.

She said she plans to vote against the latest proposal from House Speaker John Boehner that would raise the debt limit and reduce the deficit. That vote is scheduled for late Thursday, but with Republican members divided on the Boehner plan, its fate remains uncertain.

Bachmann was asked whether there is ever an appropriate level of debt for the government to carry.

"There may be times when we do need to increase the debt, particularly in emergencies, but this is not the situation we are in right now," she answered, saying the current debt impasse is simply the result of "bad policies" coming from the Obama administration.

She said the president employed "scare tactics" during his address to the nation on Monday evening to pressure Americans into giving him more spending power.

Though Bachmann's appearance at the press club was pegged to the debt debate, she was questioned late in the program about her Christian faith and whether she finds it difficult to square her personal beliefs with her role as public servant.

"I don't find it difficult to reconcile with my faith," she said. "As President of the United States I will pray every day and ask for the Lord to give me guidance as president. And even more so, I want you to know that I will be praying for every one of you, too, every day."

Bachmann was also asked where she gets her news and what she reads. She said she is addicted to her iPad and often frequents left-leaning news organizations to get a different perspective from her own, naming MSNBC, The Huffington Post and The Daily Beast as examples.

Debt ceiling or no, the damage is already done. International markets are flumoxxed at the financial stupidity of our Congress. Thanks to the Tea Party and our "wet behind the ears" Congress, I bet we are going to be downgraded whether or not we raise the ceiling. Because we give credit and voice to stupid people, we are no longer seen as the leaders of the world but as a country that has spent way too much intellectual capital on "Dancing with the Stars." Other countries feature books on tv and radio. We feature Charlie Sheen and Sara Palin. We've become the morons of the world.

Well, at least Bachmann knows some news organizations, unlike Palin. However, I consider both these individuals to be very dangerous for our country, indeed!

It must not be important to Bachmann......she isn't even there working on it.

Anyone who actually fathoms this woman as a viable candidate for president has no crediblity whatsoever. If she is to be one of the other candidates choice for VP, will be the reason they lose.

She is a complete fraud. A former democrat who has taken handouts after handout, yet rails against them. She is a joke and i laugh at anyone who suggests her viability.

Belief is a wonderful thing; it doesn't need to be tied to anything. Has she been paying attention to the stock markets and has she even glanced at historical situations in which other countries have not been able to pay their bills? Why would America not suffer such consequences? Is it because God is on our side? President Bachmanm. Please!!!

From above: Bachmann was asked whether there is ever an appropriate level of debt for the government to carry: 'There may be times when we do need to increase the debt, particularly in emergencies, but this is not the situation we are in right now,' she answered, saying the current debt impasse is simply the result of "bad policies" coming from the Obama administration. She said the president employed "scare tactics" during his address to the nation on Monday evening to pressure Americans into giving him more spending power.

Why is it, CNN, that when a person like Bachmann says something that is WHOLLY UNTRUE, you make no reference to that in your story??? I mean, what is the point of relating, verbatim, the nonsense that the debt limit deadline is bunk manufactured by the Pres.?? This is what is wrong with "journalism" today. Here, I'll help:

    1. Increasing the debt limit allows Congress to pay for what they've ALREADY VOTED, and ALREADY CONTRACTED TO SPEND. It does NOT allow the Pres. to have a 'blank check', have more 'spending power' or any of the other talking points that the GOP is using to lie to the American people.

    2. EVERY reputable economist and lawmaker in this country who has any sort of expertise or experience in the REAL WORLD not only says that defaulting on our debt would be catastrophic, but also indicates that this bogus "crisis" that the GOP has wrought on America has the potential to lead to a downgrade of our credit rating, essentially undermining the already tepid recovery, and amounting to a "tax" on every man, woman and child in America.

    3. The idea that our debt is caused from Barack Obama's policies, instead of being a result of the disgusting spending binge that was executed during the previous administration–exorbitant tax cuts (disproportionately distributed to the rich as compared to the middle class), two unfunded wars, and an unfunded premium drug program–is ludicrous, and ignores the complacency of many of the same talking heads and dishonest brokers who are now trying to shove massive cuts, to programs that many poor, elderly and even middle class people rely on, down our throats.

    Seriously, sheesh!!

The self-declared scholarly Ms. Bachman seems to think the reference in the constitution to 'full faith and credit' refers to the federal government's fiscal policy. It does not. Score another for the mail-in law school she attended.

All the economists, politicians, experts, Wall Street results, etc etc predicting disaster MUST be wrong if Michelle says so. She may not have any knowledge on the subject, but her economic experience (gained as a creator of almost 5 jobs at her gay-curing clinic) plus her direct line to God are enough for me.

Ummm.....the Eco right now is not an emergencies? I think the TeaParty Ran on that. Failing to raise the debt limit would just make it more of an Emergency.

I hope she gets the GOP ticket.....i mean really.

Totally delusonal like the rest of the wingnuts. Their Wall Street masters will MAKE them raise it. Snookie Palin really wants Bachmann's money and media attention now because her movie tanked big time at the box office.

  20. The Greedy Old Pigs have lost their minds (what little they ever had)!

Wow, she certainly is delusional. The vast majority of the debt she claims is President Obama's fault in fact is the direct responsibility of Reagan and the Bush syndicate. She blames Obama for having the nerve to put the costs of Georgie-boy's "off the books" war costs back into the budget. That was a cost attributable to Obama, it was a GOBP cost. These teatards are incredibly ignorant about history. Keep up with your sick "beliefs" Michele, and remember to keep up your cult chant of "we care for the greedy, not the needy."

If you pay attention to what the Ratings Agencies are saying, the real problem that will cause them to lower the ratings of American debt is the level of debt itself compared to the Gross National Product. That ratio right now is approaching 100% and it will get there this summer. This is out of control and the real problem. Raising taxes will take productive money out of the economy and will tend to make the GNP lower. Spending cuts are the right answer if you are worried about the quality of National Debt.
