Senate Democrats block Boehner debt ceiling plan after House approval

Washington (CNN) - House Speaker John Boehner's plan to raise the nation's debt ceiling and slash government spending narrowly passed his chamber on Friday and then was blocked by Senate Democrats, setting up a weekend of negotiations to seek a deal that would avoid a potential federal default next week.

The Senate vote was 59-41 to table the measure, which effectively kills it unless Democrats decide to bring it up again.

CNN Senior Political Editor Mark Preston and Bob Costantini look at the politics of the Debt Ceiling mess. Plus, Grover Norquist says maybe House Republicans should “take one bite of the apple” in terms of spending restraint and enjoy the taste.

The House should keep sending the Cut Cup & Balance bill to the Senate and president, nothing else is acceptable to the American people.

These people are talking about spending spending spending. They don't realize how much the lowest tax rates in 60 years are ravishing our budget deficit. Weve got the Lowest tax rates in the midst of the second worst economic crisis this country have ever seen, this is unheard of folks, then someone is wondering why the hell the bill is so big. These tax rates are costing as much money as spending. We've got two entity that is blowing up the budget, low tax rates and spending, the problem is the repugs only want to tackle one part of this beast. I've been teething for the longest that the president should put away all the bush tax cuts and start the most massive infrastructure and transportation building in this country's history, which would bring back our lost industries, put millions to work, bring down our employment rates because we would be hiring folks that don't have a masters degree or even a bachelor, modernize our crumbling infrastructures to keep up
with china, and get back to our space explorations heck we may be the first ones to get some super mineral, or energy to make earth better from some planet or rock in space.

As we come down to the end, do we get to see who and what the Republican Party has become. Government cannot function when half of it is corrupt and splintered.

Boehner cannot bring the Tea Party in line because Boehner didn't bring them to Washington. The radicals don't feel obligated to Boehner. It was the PACs with the undocumented, unlimited cash donations that brought these extremist radicals to Washington. The drones follow the wishes of their benefactors, and it ain't the Boehner nor the Republican Party. This is the new political reality of 'Citizens United'.

This is not at all pretty impressive Mr. Boehner. Why can't you get organised first and do what you were assigned to do. Am afraid to say, you are heading to the "No confidence Vote" in this man!

looks like Boehner cannot rally his own caucus. If i were a democratic leader (Reid, Pelosi and Obama) I'd take the "gang of 6' proposal that includes revenue increases and even more debt reduction than Boehners plan and say "we can pass this if you cut the tea party out and bring enough republicans. if we default, based on polls the public will blame you and the republicans and you WILL be out of the speakers chair. if you join with us now and pass something so we don't default you will lose the tea party wing, but you still only MIGHT be out of the speakers chair."

Boehner can not deliver a unified Republican postion; he is not in control. As such, he is an ineffective leader and not someone the President, the Senate, or the American people can count on to deliver results for them.

The Tea Party zealots are members of the "Flat Earth" society; things like FACTS, SCIENCE, TRUTH, PHYSICAL LAWS, ECONOMIC CAUSE & EFFECT are lost on them and have no meaning. They would like to force government to operate to their standards but they are the minority in a majority-rules country. They apparently think that the Government grinds to a halt if they remain intransigent. Under these circumstances the Government must be prepared to GRIND THEM TO a PULP.

If you are an American that gets a Social Security check, or someone that depends on Medicare for your health benefits, or someone that currently serves [or formerly served] in the Armed Forces, these Republican politicians are telling you, LOUD & CLEAR, that they are going to sell you out. If you vote for them, you are voting AGAINST YOURSELF. Only a fool cuts his own throat.

When President Obama takes the necessary steps to look out for you, will you be there to back him? If you don't, DO NOT expect anyone to ever come to you aide again.

Those who are comparing size of USA expenses to other countries should realize that USA is the world "police" and "caretaker", and that is not free.

    @Rudy NYC,
Sir, you really give very good, knowledgeable, polite and enjoyable comments. It often makes me think – could not have said it better myself. But, more then just that, you have very well founded original points of view – very smart. I enjoy reading your lines very much. You should consider getting into politics – I know, I would vote for you!
@ Floyd, and others, well said! I wonder if comments on the ticker ever make it to Congress.
I really do not know if this is going to come out right. How long do they know that they have to act? A long time! But this is a very good example of the “work” the GOP/TP has been doing since 2008: It really is the party of “NO, HELL NO” and started to say even before President Obama was in office: “We want the President to fail!” One should be careful to accuse someone of being racist but I do get the impression through their shameless stances that “a black one” does not fit into their picture of what a President should look like. Especially since this man is all that they are not: VERY SMART, VERY POLITE, VERY CAPEBLE and liked worldwide! It must be pure envy that rides these small and nasty minds!

So Name King, your solution to the current problem is to raise taxes and execute another stimulus just like the one that just failed?!? Let's call your vision 2020 in 2012. ( 20% unemployment and $20 trillion debt for America in 2012.) If you think Obama has drama trying to dig his way out of the current level of debt, your plan would make the problems in Greece look like a Sunday picnic.

Boehner's caucus doesn't include the Tea Party. Boehner and the old guard thinks the Tea Party is and should be part of the Republican caucus, but in reality the Tea Party is an independent group of delusional extremists.
