(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain won the Western Conservative Summit 2011 Denver Presidential Straw Poll Sunday, 35 points ahead of second-place finisher Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who has yet to announce a bid for the White House.
Cain, the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza and radio host, received 48 percent followed by Perry with 13 percent; former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania with 10 percent and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann with 9 percent. Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, who has said he will decide about a 2012 bid by September, received 4 percent. The other declared and non-declared candidates garnered fewer than 4 percent support.
Perry, Santorum, Cain and Bolton all spoke at the summit.
Five hundred and eight ballots were cast at the three-day conference organized by the Centennial Institute at the Colorado Christian University, which works toward public awareness of faith, family and freedom.
Event organizer John Andrews said the Denver Straw poll is the “first test of 2012 presidential preferences among grassroots activists in Colorado and the Western states.”
On his Twitter account, Cain said he was “honored” to learn of his win.
Apparently, Denver Republicans love candidates that bash Muslim Americans and their right to worship as afforded in the U.S. Constitution.
VERY INTERESTING. IS DENVER SYMPATHETIC TO CANDIDATES THAT ATTACK MUSLIM AMERICANS?
Obviously, Christian Conservative Republicans in Denver really like candidates that degrade Muslim Americans as second-class citizens with no rights to worship as afforded in the American Constitution. Denver Republicans true colors are showing.
That'll be a large mushroom, anchovies, and olives; oh wait, he's our president now.. OMG 🙁
So 500 "christian" right-wingers have a poll, about 245 vote for this racist blowhard, and it makes the news. I, for one, would welcome the Pizza King as the republican candidate – but I wonder, what are these peoplethinking? Or drinking?
That just shows there are nitwits that would rather have cartoon characters tell them what to do. For all their talk on independence, conservatives really want someone that acts like a goof to boss them around. Government should not be run like a BUSINESS. Especially when you see what kind of nuts run businesses.
Clowns to the left of me. Jokers to the right. Ugh. Herman Cain? Please.
In 2012 we will need to elect a President who can get us back on the right track. Frankly, I don't think Cain is able.
Who cares? He has no shot to be President.
Another clueless extremist...what has happened to the GOP? They are going to have to dump the nutjobs and get a serious moderate/centerist if they want my vote ever again. These candidates make the democrats look good!
I can't believe there that many Idiot In Denver that would even vote for any body that Is back bt the Tea Party are has anything to do with the Tea Party.
OOH, the Denver Straw Poll! And how many people actually took part in it? What percentage of the Colorado Republican Party did they make up? All a straw poll proves is on that day, a group of people favored one person over another. It carries about as much weight in the overall primary process as what percentage of butter fat a person favors in his or her milk.
So according to straw this guy is it? I am "extremely" excited by the GOP offerings this time around. Is it all a clever plot to make Romney somehow look like a moderate? It reminds be of the Blues Brothers movie when the barmaid says"We have both kinds of music. Country and Western".
They have the whole spectrun of politics, all the way from "hard right to extreme lunatic fringe right"
I liive in Denver and this guy is a joke just the same as Palin is.
Good for him. It takes alot of money and food to entice people to go and vote for you.
Can the GOP find anyone dumber? My word, this party is a huge joke on itself. Palin, her stunt double Bachman, "I have prayed for rain and God has not gotten back to me" Perry, and now Cain. Ouch.
An interesting guy. Progressives hate him simply because he is a self made man.
Some people in this country want to ban this, that, or some other thing based upon their morals and their religous upbring. I think such well intentioned thinking and legislation is wrong because it restricts people's freedoms.
What do we when someone comes along and wants to ban pork sales, in an effort to stop people from eating it? As crazy as that sounds, I know it is going to happen. No question about "if", only "when." And I think Cain is the right man for the job.
