Perry heckled as campaign shifts into new phase

Portsmouth, New Hampshire (CNN) - Rick Perry was greeted by protesters Thursday morning as he met with voters at a Seacoast cafe, a clear sign that the 2012 campaign for the presidency has entered a new phase.

"Hands off our Medicare," about 35 protesters chanted as the Republican presidential candidate shook hands outside Popovers on the Square, a popular local eatery.

"Stop attacking middle class families Rick Perry," a man shouted at the Texas governor as he ordered a popover pastry.

The protesters were largely outnumbered by supporters as well as those looking for a glimpse of the latest entrant into the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

Perry received a similar reception at his second event of the day in Dover. But he did not seem disturbed by the commotion, as he signed autographs and mugged for a camera as he chewed a bite of popover. Despite the loud chanting, Perry made two loops of the outdoor seating area at the cafe to shake people's hands.

Several feet away Democratic protesters from the Alliance for Retired Americans held signs warning Perry to "Back Off My Social Security."

Perry criticized the entitlement program in a book, calling it a "Ponzi scheme" and a "failure."

"That's a stunning position to take and I don't think that's going to go over well in New Hampshire," said State Rep. Robin Read, D-Portsmouth.

One woman who did not appear to be affiliated with the protesters ushered her son up to the governor and prompted him with questions for Perry like "do you believe in evolution?"

"It's a theory that's out there," Perry told the child. "It's got some gaps in it. In Texas we teach both Creationism and evolution."

The mother then told her young son: "Ask him why he doesn't believe in science," as Perry moved onto another conversation.

Like my mother always said, when texans die they bury them in a shoe box. Big ass feet and bigger say nothing mouths. This guy will say anything to get elected. He is not very educated and his record as governor is an illusion. His state ranks near the bottom in educational test scores, education funding and is last in the nation with the largest number of people over 25 with no high school diploma. And those jobs he takes credit for were mostly in the military and all low paying jobs with no benifits. This really sounds like a guy who can lead us and our youth into being able to compete for those high tech jobs in the global economy. If america is dumb enough to put him in the white house we will deserve what we get which will be the end period. He looks like Jim Jones with big hair, don't drink the kool aid.

Social security is nothing to him, and most politicians, because they have no need for it. Their comfort in retirement will never depend on SS, so what do they care?

I am always amazed at the bottom-feeders of the 51% that DO NOT pay taxes. They just simply do not have any shame, r self-serving & put poltics b/4 the country. Typical parasitic liberals. Not afraid to walk around with their hands sticking out!

"you people that are "educated" really need to brush up on history." Wouldn't that be some of that 'education' that you despise so much?

All we need is another IDIOT Texas yahoo in the White House – and I say this as one who was born and raised in Texas – Morons like Bush and Perry are a HUGE embarrassment to me as a Texan.

I am no longer afraid of Rick Perry. He has proved to be just another loudmouth crazy like all the rest. He has good handlers that planned it so he had a private "coming out" party, not just one of the crowd in Iowa and not entering the silly debate. But when you get to the man himself, he is no threat at all to Obama.

Perry is the darling of Corporate Media, they are already manipulating public opinion by even giving this guy air time. Poor old Ron Paul who barely lost to Bachmann is not even given any air play. That speaks volumns, and I'am not a Ron Paul supporter, but whats fair is fair.

Hey Rick, I have decided that you and Michele Bachmann would make a great team. We will create a bumper sticker that reads, "Vote for BP - We can blow the head off anything"

Way to use your child, you make me proud not to be a liberal. "Ask him about evolution", "Ask him about...", the kid should have said "shut up, ask him yourself, I just want to meet someone that might be president one day." I can guarantee he doesn't care if his teacher explains evolution and creationism in the same class, or if Perry has the evil "R" next to his name. Perry is exactly right, the kid should be allowed to make up his own mind, but clearly this mother won't let that happen. This borders on emotional child abuse.

If u r mad about Perry fatten the wallets of other countries u s/b mad at Obama. His "Throw America Under the Bus" tour bus was made in Canada (eh?). How about the company Evergreen Solar where Obama went touting all the jobs the stimulus money created/saved and how green energy is the way to go & we should drive more fuel efficient car while he is all over in AF1 & the Death Star Buss!! Evergreen Solar is seeking bankruptcy after getting billions in stimulus $$$. Have no fear though, they r hiring in CHINA!!!

Rudy NYC Pehaps u should ask Perry How will he put America back to work. B/c Obama is clearly clueless on how to do this & for the past 2yrs been touting how he is going create jobs but wait till Sept for it after my long vacation in Martha's vineyard! Nice huh?

If a politician is skeptical about evolution or believes in creation, it does not affect my life. Politicians like Obama who believe in Keynesian economic policies that fail every time and bring our economy down do affect my life. Those are the zany beliefs I worry about. I live in TX and Perry doesn't make me go to Church or make my kids learn creationism. His policies have created jobs, BO's policies have cost jobs. That's all you need to know. The left has been reduced to name-calling and personal ridicule, because they have no other argument.

it is said that "the truth shall set you free" ... if that is so .. then Perry's in trouble. The truth is coming & it ain't pretty.

I was FOOLISH enough to vote foe Obama last time. If I go to the other direction and vote for Perry, maybe it will all work out. Lord knows, it can't get worse than what we currently have.

I beg to differ with you. Any Repuke/Teabagger will definitely prove you wrong. Keep evangelicals/fundamentalists away from the White House or you will pay the price. The end of the world in 2012 if Obama loses.

  22. In order for 15 MILLION to find a job, only ONE must LOSE his.... Fire Obama in 2012

I pay into Social Security. In what way is it an "entitlement"?
    ================================================
It would not be an entitlement if you didn't get far more out than you paif into it.

Looks like the looney leftist Democrats strategy is to heckle and cause problems because they have no solutions for the massive problems their insane social welfare programs have created. BTW, social securtity IS a big ponzi scheme. Bernie Madoff has nothing over the federal government in the massive fraud dept.
