Just a joke: Bachmann's hurricane message from God

(CNN) - Michele Bachmann's press secretary characterized comments by the Republican presidential candidate, when she said Hurricane Irene was a message to Washington, as a joke.

"Obviously she was saying it in jest," Alice Stewart told TalkingPointsMemo Monday.

Over the weekend, the Minnesota Rep. turned Hurricane Irene into a campaign punch line, suggesting the recent natural disasters were acts of God.

"Washington, D.C. you'd think by now they'd get the message," Bachmann said at a town hall in Florida Saturday to laughs. "An earthquake, a hurricane, are you listening? The American people have done everything they possibly can, now it's time for an act of God and we're getting it."

Just like a kid saying, "it was an accident" – except that she exacerbates it by being in poor taste.

Why do people listen to her? A life-long sponge who lived off of public money and now she says she's against public jobs? You all are getting fooled. The best game in town is to become a Republican candidate – you don't have to have any ideas but to say no taxes and that will get a lot of money from the bribers, corporations. If you believe Bachmann has any clue on how to solve even tying a shoelace, you are blind.

rapierpoint said........To the people that complain about the joke...lighten up. We all know that there was widespread damage etc, but jokes like these are something that's been around with us for ages. Some of you complaining probably thought the joke going around Thursday about "Bush's Fault" with regard to the earthquake was hilarious. There are comedians out there that are doing the same material. Some people need to just get a sense of humor, lighten up, and also realize that not everyone reacts to things the same way.

Now, rewrite your response if President Obama had said this, instead of Bachmann.

Given all the other bizzare statements and outright falsehoods coming from Bachman, it's no wonder people can't tell when or IF she is joking. I'm sure a lot of her followers didn't take it as a joke.

Saying that all that distruction from a natural disaster is punishment and act of god is the same garbage those westboro babtist church wackos would say. Doesn't surprise me she shares some of their views. Her and the rest of the GOP canadates are a de-evolution of sociaty

The more God has to put up with the likes of Bachmann the better our chances He'll approve of an Atheist president.

I'm laughing. I've always been a big fan of dark humor.

But Hurricane Irene? That's not funny.

    Too soon.

I said it yesterday here on the Ticker, and I'll say it again. When Dominionists and people so lacking in human empathy as to come off like robots are allowed to run for the presidency, are we witnessing the decline of civilization first hand that we've all ready about in our history books? I'm beginning to think so. We have ignoramuses who think they are chosen by God refusing to help their fellow countrymen, like Cantor who said no funds unless we cut somewhere else. I say we cut Cantor's pay, along with the rest of Congress, for starters. Let them live on minimum wage with no benefits so they can begin to have a clue, begin to relate to what their constituents' lives are like every single day. God, these people make me sick.

Today's GOP: Ignorant, arrogant, tone deaf, heartless, and greedy. Bachmann should repeat that "joke" at the nearest Red Cross shelter. I'm sure she'll love the reception she gets. That brainless comment ranks right up there with Cantor's remark in his OWN district (aka the epicenter of last weeks earthquake) that NO federal relief funds should be approved unless there were matching CUTS in spending.

Everything is about God with this woman. The truth is that if God was going to send a message to Washington he (or she) would have made sure that Ms. Bachman was in the Washington Monument when the walls starting cracking.

Everytime this idiot puts her foot in her mouth, it is always a "joke". But she is the joke. It is so sad to the state that gave us Hubert Humphrey has to the state that gave us Tim "Not Good and Palenty", Jesse Meathead Ventura and now her.

Wait. Don't I recall some rather cruel remarks coming from folks on the left about God taking revenge on southerners when those tornadoes touched down? Her remarks are not half even has bad as what was said back then.

In school we learned about the "dark ages," when people had preposterous notions and what we called "superstitions." We learned that these things were relics from the past and that human knowledge has moved on. Since Internet gave every bubba and bubbette a megaphone, superstition has resurfaced. Apparently it never went away. These people know how to present their preposterous and unfounded notions as facts. People buy it because they neither understand nor respect scholarship and what it requires of those who claim to present established fact. Michelle Bachmann is the poster child for this unfortunate trend.

Earthquakes and Hurricanes are acts of God if you believe in God so she's half right. To imply though that the acts of God are some sort of medieval punishment being meted out to Washington for sins allegedly committed...

last time i checked she was still a Congresswoman, so that makes her one of the sinners she railed against. She is as hopeless as her fellow whack jobs Palin and Perry.
