(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann defended her recent comments about natural disasters in Washington, D.C. serving as messages from God, saying she was joking.
"I have a great sense of humor and I think it's important to exhibit that humor sometimes when you are talking to people as well," Bachmann said Monday at a campaign event in Miami. "Of course I was being humorous when I said that."
The Minnesota Rep. received criticism following statements she made over the weekend that equated the recent earthquake and Hurricane Irene to acts of God.
"Washington, D.C. you'd think by now they'd get the message," Bachmann said at a town hall in Florida Saturday to laughs. "An earthquake, a hurricane, are you listening? The American people have done everything they possibly can, now it's time for an act of God and we're getting it."
At Monday's event, Bachmann said the remarks were intended to tell the president he is not listening to the American people.
This is the exact reason why they lost my vote. Living in the northeast I would not take this very lightly. I hope others will hold her feet to the fire for such a stupid comment. There is no apology or excuse for it whatsoever!
Remember when Gilbert Gottfried tweeted that totally insensitive comment after the Japanese tsunami? Aflac canned him immediately!
If only saying insensitive, dumb things gave an automatic boot to Bachmann and all the other GOP wannabes ... now THAT would be rapturous!
She goesn't seem to realize that when she says "Washington" THAT means HER!
Brilliant! joke around about natural disasters all the while endorsing the end of FEMA and the EPA. This Woman has dung for brains.
She reminds me of Serena Joy from Margaret Atwood's "The Hand Maid's Tale"...If you are not familar with that work, I strongly suggest you check it out!
Wow, what a Grade A idiot. Natural disasters to mean that Obama isn't listening to people?
What is WRONG with this woman?!
Grow up CNN.
It was harmless humor poking fun at the Political establishment of this country.
Heard a great comment the other day on the radio ... would you ever hire a babysitter who didn't like kids? Then why in the world would you ever vote for a politician who hates government?
Republican humor is like Christian Rock.
If she hadn't said it, David Letterman or Jay Leno would have.
I can't believe I'm going to defend this fruitcake. Of course, she made the comment in jest. Lighten up, people. She gives us plenty of reasons to laugh at her when she's being serious.
She played all conservatives like a fiddle...
Michelle, please do us all a favor. Drop out of the race now while you still have some shred of dignity left. Pleeeaaassse!
Jack from Illinois: Well put – thanks!
Picking Palin as a running mate, backing Sharon Angle and Christine O'donnell, and now making Bachmann a viable leader.......goes to show you how stupid, gullible, and niave the GOP is that people actually go for these people, They have not provided a solid plan for anything for the last 10 years that isn't lower taxes, smaller government (without being specific), job killing regulation (without still being specific), and equally hating, disrespecting, belittling, or straight out attacking President Obama. I can't understand how all the followers of the GOP are so clairvoyant that they see Obama for a fraud, yet keep sending money, buying products, and promoting all the obvious frauds, if the Radio personalities loved the country so much, then why weren't they warning us about W? Why aren't they warning you about Palin, Bachmann, Perry, Romney, etc.? Because in doing so, they won't be able to sell gold, emergency food, and computer security.......Wow people are naive.
Here is why all non tea partiers, non conservatives see you as racist, because your alternatives are obviously incompetent and this must be your reason for backing these thieves.
Her "humor" and her "serious" certainly sound the same. How do you tell the difference????
Michele, when you look in the mirror, do you see the "Joker" looking back ?
Actually she was repeating an editorial cartoon that I saw last Friday. The cartoon showed the White House with Obama praying to God to show him a sign if he was on the wrong track – the outside of the White House showed cracks from the earthquake and a hurricane.
Apparently all of you have such an anti-Bachmann mindset that what you might have found funny in one context is the oppposite when she says it
The joke is MICHELLE!
Michelle Bachman prostitutes God to gain power. Someone with an abusive personality trait will make a mean remark at the expensive of others, and then always says it was all just a joke. Michelle Bachman is a mean, vicious woman seeking power for herself. She is a false prophet.
It's NOT a joke. It's a way for her to try to appeal to the fundamentalists by saying things non-fundamentalists think is kooky while at the same time trying to tell those who find that sentiment kooky/scary that her comments aren't real – she trying to talk out of both sides of her mouth at the same time.
Sounds to me like she was saying we the people deserved the disasters.
Do you know what the biggest joke of all is??? Michele Bachmann!
Please. make. it. stop.
What an idiot.
Instead of exhibiting your great sense of humor, how about demonstrating some sort of intellectual capacity? Voters like that too....
God has his own sense of humor, he has sent us this messenger to foretell us to shun her and all she represents, the idiotic and sociopathic path of disastrous self-righteousness. She didn't tell a joke, she is a joke, a lethal joke.
