Bachmann points to 'great sense of humor' after God joke
(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann defended her recent comments about natural disasters in Washington, D.C. serving as messages from God, saying she was joking.
"I have a great sense of humor and I think it's important to exhibit that humor sometimes when you are talking to people as well," Bachmann said Monday at a campaign event in Miami. "Of course I was being humorous when I said that."
Her reaction was similar to her campaign's response Monday.
The Minnesota Rep. received criticism following statements she made over the weekend that equated the recent earthquake and Hurricane Irene to acts of God.
"Washington, D.C. you'd think by now they'd get the message," Bachmann said at a town hall in Florida Saturday to laughs. "An earthquake, a hurricane, are you listening? The American people have done everything they possibly can, now it's time for an act of God and we're getting it."
At Monday's event, Bachmann said the remarks were intended to tell the president he is not listening to the American people.

People died.. and she jokes about it and tells people to have a sense of humor...
Generally if you have to say you have "a great sense of humor", you don't.
So, why wasn't anybody laughing????
She has offended both Christians and intelligent people.
I wonder how funny the folks on the east coast think her "joke" is. MB is the joke, can her 15 minutes of fame be over now, please? I am so bored with these TEA baggers with their poorly hidden religious fanatic agendas.
I live here in Florida and lived through Ivan and Dennis a few years ago and there was nothing funny about people who died or were left without a house, etc. Thankfully our house was fine, but many others were not so lucky. She is a complete moron!
It's pretty obvious to anybody who actually watched the speech that she was joking. Of course, if you print a few words from her discussion and then state that she has to 'defend' them, you can make anything sound distasteful. To all of you hypersensitive folks out there, she has nothing to apologize for. She didn't kill those people, the hurricane did. Maybe we should all just stick to 'knock-knock' jokes so we don't offend the most sensitive among us.
BTW, I'm not a Bachmann fan. I think she's more screwed up than a left-handed football bat.
How are losses of life, towns wiped out, homes destroyed jokes?
A joke? When will she take accountability for her statements? Whenever her comments get significant negative reactions she either clams up and claims she doesn't deal with trivial matters or she claims she was just joking. One joke she makes over and over is claiming she isn't a politician. The spouting off of these self-proclaimed chosen of God is getting tiresome.
Conservatives do not have a sense of humor. Which is ironic, because she is *great* at telling jokes. The one about bringing back $2 gas by catering to big oil's interests had me slapping my knee.
God and disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes are subjects normal people don't joke about. Neither was Bachman and now when she says she was joking...she's lying!

Ah, yes, Michelle Bachmann. The greatest Natural Disaster to come out of Minnesota since the Twins won the World Series in '91! For someone who considers herself to be a Fundamentalist, Evangelical Christian, she is too flippant in her taking of the Lord's name in a humorous manner. If she was making a joke, she needs to apologize to the families of the people who died, as well as to those who lost everything they had to the power of this storm. She owes an apology to the thousands of people who have pitched in to help others in this time of disaster. She owes an apology to the FEMA staff who have been working with the states from North Carolina up through Vermont and New Hampshire for their efforts. She owes an apology to the Governors of all those states, too! And I am not talking a one line press release issued by her office. I mean an actual apology where she stands in front of a microphone with coverage by ALL the news outlets (not just her friends who work for Rupert Murdoch), and actually address the American people describing her insensitivity, arrogance and ignorance.
Joke or not, Bachmann should probably try reading or watching the news. Washington D.C, was, by and large, spared by both the earthquake and the hurricane. It was the small inland towns that took the bulk of the beating. Is Bachmann saying that God was trying to send small town America a message?
Yes, Michelle, you are very funny. Unfortunately, no one else is laughing, except perhaps GOD who thinks you running for president is really a joke.
Give Bachmann her "props". She succeeded in getting her name in the news and "ink" over a disaster. Look how many people, including me, have posted about this. It is astute modern politics – you'll never forget her name and poor taste counts for nothing as long as you don't.
As to the joke – if it was told by a comic, not a candidate for the office of President, we'd think it maybe was in poor taste, but coming from an entertainer. Wait a minute! Maybe that is all Bachmann is: an entertainer.

Bachmann is an ignorant, arrogant lunatic who knows nothing about our nation's great history, nothing about our Constitution, nothing about foreign relations, and constantly makes idiotic statements. How well would that go over when she has to discuss real issues with Putin – she does not even know the Soviet Union does not exist anymore! How will she handle discussions with the President of France – talk about theiir mutual connection to name "Waterloo" (she came from Waterlloo Iowa)? How fast will she make America the laughing stock of the world? How soon will terrorist see how weak we are with her and attack us again?
Bachmann does not even know the very basic of economic principles nor what the President's job is. She thinks the President can lower gas prices and is so economically stupid she claims she can fix the economy in 3 months. Really?? Tell us the details.
