(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann defended her recent comments about natural disasters in Washington, D.C. serving as messages from God, saying she was joking.
"I have a great sense of humor and I think it's important to exhibit that humor sometimes when you are talking to people as well," Bachmann said Monday at a campaign event in Miami. "Of course I was being humorous when I said that."
The Minnesota Rep. received criticism following statements she made over the weekend that equated the recent earthquake and Hurricane Irene to acts of God.
"Washington, D.C. you'd think by now they'd get the message," Bachmann said at a town hall in Florida Saturday to laughs. "An earthquake, a hurricane, are you listening? The American people have done everything they possibly can, now it's time for an act of God and we're getting it."
At Monday's event, Bachmann said the remarks were intended to tell the president he is not listening to the American people.
Just... just.... just don't.
Don't defend it. Don't rationalize it. Don't talk about it at all. In today's political climate (for which you and others of your ilk both Dem and Rep are responsible) there is NO such thing as a sense of humor. Leave humor to the comedians.
The only natural disaster worse than Irene is Bachman. Its only a matter of time before Darwinism intervenes and we are
rid of this weak and stupid.
If you really believe this woman said this as a joke, then the joke is on you. She is a fundamentalist nutbag,
great. so now we know whenever she says something idiotic, it's just her great sense of humor! i feel better now...
Oh, sure. Say something you really mean, so you'll clue in your followers about your radical ideas, and then tell the world it was a joke. Just like saying "submit" means "respect." Is dishonesty one of the Christian Right virtues? As a mainline Christian, I am dismayed at what the average person is taking away from this woman. She doesn't represent Christian values. She is a sham.
I don't believe her. She got caught saying something stupid and is trying to get out of it.
She is a joke...is god a joke when she talks about pray away the gay?...she doesnt just step on her tongue, she is as warped as she appears to be..she would if not a memeber of the Tea Party Express not even be in the media...she is a no hoper for president or even vice president, nobody wants the sarah palin 'clank' with appealing to 1% of the populous and chasing away 25% of the republican voters into the hands fo the democrats to avoid another dumb leader after george 'warmonger' bush jr
Politicians are not allowed to tell jokes. No matter the subject, someone will twist it and say how hurt their feelings are, and use it against you.
@ Anonymous: "To all the liberals spewing their phony outrage, her light-hearted comments were directed toward our out-of-control government, not the natural disaster and its victims.
You liberals really have a knack for ignoring government failure."
You really believe that, huh? And you really have a knack for ignoring common sense..... (see, I'm not even going to call you a right/wrong wing nut for trying to defending the indefensible).
I still want to pull apart her grilled roast beef-n-cheese sandwich.
There's a joke here alright, but it's not her lame excuse.
no you weren't, Crazy!
Not only is it insensitive - it doesn't even make sense. The Creator of the Whole Effing Universe doesn't give two clods in a punchbowl about what the United States (or Earth, or the Solar System) does, or doesn't do. If he did, he would have destroyed us all about five minutes after we exploded the first nuclear weapon - assuming he let the Earth survive after the atrocities of the World Wars and other various wars and slaughters. Would such a being care about the Federal deficit or the whining of the Tea Party? Seriously?
Hopefully, Michele Bachmann keeps her humour when SNL makes a joke about her.
Oh, so THAT'S what 'having a sense of humor' means! Like an idiot I always assumed it meant saying things that were actually funny.
Joking about diaqsters or God is a sign of this persons unsuitability to be POTUS. She is totally unpresidential in demeanour
Idiot and a liar- that's how she can be married to a gay man.
no "god", natural , if so then your god is unjust period, were was the quakes/ hurricanes for slavery, women equality right to be treated as equals ok, what BS FARSE
I do not trust this woman. I honestly believe she, at her core, embraces the imposition of THEOCRACTIC rule in America.
She simply believes that this OK because her theocracy would be based on her interpretation of Christianity which she views as SUPERIOR to other religions. Maybe it is, but we still have a nation founded on the separation of Church & State. So whether it's radical, rightwing Islam in Iran, Afghanistan with the Taliban or radical, rightwing Christianity in American with Bachmann & Perry, it has NO PLACE in Governmental law or policies.
She wasn't joking. Someone has told her that she needs to put this fire out before most of America see her for what she really is.
Because a hurricane that has killed dozens and caused billions in damage is such great joke material. What a lame way to back out.
Loss of life, property damages in the millions, I can see how a natural disaster can be a joke...NOT FUNNY Michelle. Just proves how insensitive to people you really are.
The Bible talks a lot about false profits like Sister Michelle. She and Brother "Good Hari" Perry both have "foot in mouth" disease. Since Christianity is a center of Bachmann's political positioning she should answer what would Jesus do in these political situations.. Would Jesus give tax breaks to the rich or try to sustain the poor with minimum food/shelter? Would Jesus think Michell's comments about natural disasters that killed people funny? Would Jesus approve of her lies and half truths?
Saying Washington isn't doing its job. Isn't her office in Washington? What has she done to help the situation that exist?
Scott - what in the world are you talking about? Neither "liberals" nor President Bush (or anybody else that I heard) was joking about Katrina. Bachmann, on the other hand, joked about a tragedy and got called out on it - instead of apologizing, she blamed everybody else for not getting the joke (that killed so many people).
This isn't a liberal or considervative issue. It's a "moron running her mouth" issue. I can't believe she's actually in the running for the GOP nomination.
NOTHING about that statement was humorous.
