(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann defended her recent comments about natural disasters in Washington, D.C. serving as messages from God, saying she was joking.
"I have a great sense of humor and I think it's important to exhibit that humor sometimes when you are talking to people as well," Bachmann said Monday at a campaign event in Miami. "Of course I was being humorous when I said that."
The Minnesota Rep. received criticism following statements she made over the weekend that equated the recent earthquake and Hurricane Irene to acts of God.
"Washington, D.C. you'd think by now they'd get the message," Bachmann said at a town hall in Florida Saturday to laughs. "An earthquake, a hurricane, are you listening? The American people have done everything they possibly can, now it's time for an act of God and we're getting it."
At Monday's event, Bachmann said the remarks were intended to tell the president he is not listening to the American people.
Minnesota Residents,
Shame on you for putting a person like this into a leadership role in the first place. If you had elected a competent individual, I wouldn't have to keep seeing this fundamentalist simpleton in the news.
My Lord, oops, excuse me . . . it's humorous to see the Libbies take such exception to what was clearly a joke to make a point about Washington's inability to listen to the voters. You folks are well on your way to the your latest derangement syndrome.
Riveting. Since she said it while laughing, and flalling her arms around, she was obivously joking. So are you telling me that she said she was obviously joking when she was obviously joking? Keep up the good work.
I wonder if she knows any good Mohammed jokes.
God is most definately a tea-party member. Their number one tennant is self-responsibility.
OK this woman is a nut job it may be a joke about DC but up here in the northeast it's no joke. We got a big problem here and in VT and she's joking around Dumm A$$.. And people really what this moron as the leader of the free world? Then they are as big a dumm a$$ as she is!!!!
Claiming to know God's intentions is not a topic for humor; it is blasphemy.
This is the worst run-back of words ever. She wasn't joking, she was being all too serious and now, she's feels embarrassed.
LOOOOOOO-OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-SEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
It never was a joke. the real joke is how they are now trying to spin it into a joke. The real joke is Bachmann herself, the vast majority of the American people laugh at her every day, each time she opens her mouth.
Well Christine O'Donell was made witch for her honest acceptance of her teen-age experiment. Now Bachman will have to pay for the price. Liberals bring WWJD comments against conservatives as if they care about Jesus' opinion. If they did, we wouldn't have so much moral destruction. "Don't do as I do, do it as I say".
The REAL joke is her trying to pretend that she was "joking" when she actually was quite serious. The "I was only kidding" gambit doesn't work in this instance.
Come on people, give Michele a break. Can’t you see that her whole campaign is a joke?
Look, I don't like her either. But get a grip people it Was just a joke.
Michelle Bachmann is proof that God has a sense of humor.
Funny like a heart attack.
Is it also God's humor that he made you an idiot?
[ChumBucket
Oh no! She said "Act of God"
what a foul and horrible thing to say!!
liberals are a plague, and should be exterminated]
Keep it up, ChumBucket, and you will have Houghton Mifflin suing you for plagerizing Mein Kampf!
She makes "God" jokes about natural disasters were people are dying....What a wonderful Commander -In- Chief she will be..."Oh we just lost thousands of soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines", we can get more haha"....Please stay off the media – I hear nobody lets her drive (it's a joke)....
I am sure the families of the 30 killed by Irene are still rolling on the floor laughing hysterically.
Making jokes about natural disasters that kills people, does not show you have a "sense of humor", it does however, show you are an incredibly insensitive cretin.
What Mrs. Bachmann said was uncalled for. I don't think she was joking. But because of the public relations, she is forced to recall and laugh it off. It's no laughing matter, especially at the expense of good people who have to deal with the devastation. Not cool.
God has a sense of humor too, how else do you explain the fact that anyone takes this woman seriously......
HAHAHA. Great joke. She should do stand up comedy. As good as Dane Cook or Eddie Murphy ever were!!
Actually, you say these things because you are just stupid. The fact that you got elected show us just how many stupid people there are in this world.
@ Scott...Liberals hijacking Katrina? Hahaha! As a (former) conservative, I must say the liberals didn't need to hijack anything, the Bush administration made a mess of that without any help from them. Bachmann is just continuing the tradition it seems.
OK, I will accept Bachmans word she was joking but she doesn't joke about the Founding Fathers Christian Values. The Founding Fathers in pursuit of happiness raped women they held in slavery, enslaved and even sold their own children borne by the women they raped.
Rape is no joke eh?
