Cantor strikes conciliatory tone before Obama jobs speech

Washington (CNN) - Striking a conciliatory tone the day before President Obama comes to Capitol Hill to reveal his jobs plan, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor left the door open to working with him on some of the proposals he's expected to present in his address to a joint session of Congress Thursday evening.

Cantor said discussions with voters over the summer recess made it clear they are anxious about the economy, and he added Americans "have lost a lot of confidence in Washington and while they are going through such tough times they're frankly sick of the rancor in this town."

Reid pushes emergency FEMA funding while Cantor denies holding disaster aid 'hostage'

Washington (CNN) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, said Wednesday he would ask the Senate to approve quickly a $6 billion emergency spending bill to replenish the Federal Emergency Management Agency's cash-strapped disaster relief fund.

The measure would then have to be voted on in the House- where Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, has insisted any federal funding to deal with the recent spate of natural disasters be offset with cuts elsewhere in the federal budget.

Giuliani: “I could beat Obama…”

(CNN)-Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani thinks he could throw President Barack Obama out of office — that is, if a presidential election were held right now.

Giuliani told CNN’s Piers Morgan Wednesday, “If Barack Obama remained roughly where he is now, sure, I think I could beat him.”

Perry 'squashed' Texas execution probe, ex-official says

Austin, Texas (CNN) - In February 2009, Sam Bassett got called to Gov. Rick Perry's office.

Bassett was then chairman of the Texas Forensic Science Commission, an agency set up in 2005 to regulate state crime labs after a series of embarrassing scandals. The first matter on its plate involved the 2004 execution of Cameron Todd Willingham, whose murder conviction rested largely on testimony that many arson experts now call outdated and incorrect.

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama is preparing to roll out proposals Thursday totaling $300 billion or more to strengthen the shaky economy and stimulate new job growth, according to Democratic sources.

While some sources put the size of the package at roughly $300 billion, one Democrat familiar with the president's plan said Wednesday that the working figure was growing and could top $400 billion.

Huntsman to host first town hall

Manchester, New Hampshire (CNN) - Presidential candidate Jon Huntsman will host his first town hall in New Hampshire next week as he continues to pour his energies into the first-in-the-nation primary state.

The question-and-answer format is the epitome of New Hampshire politicking, where primary voters pride themselves on their political knowledge and access to White House hopefuls.

BLITZER'S BLOG: Obama needs to deliver on jobs speech

(CNN) – President Obama really needs to deliver Thursday night when he addresses a joint session of Congress. I'm not just talking about the politics of the big speech. I am talking about really delivering for the American people.

He needs to come with an understandable and doable plan that will help turn things around for millions of unemployed and underemployed Americans. That means getting some package through Congress; otherwise, the words won't have any practical job creation benefit.

Forbes endorsement of Hatch doesn't deter FreedomWorks

Washington (CNN) - FreedomWorks says it's still committed to finding a consensus fiscal conservative candidate to challenge longtime Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, even though a FreedomWorks board member has endorsed Hatch.

Monday morning the Hatch campaign was touting an endorsement by Steve Forbes, the former two-time GOP presidential candidate, CEO of Forbes, and a vice chairman of the FreedomWorks Foundation board.

It's showtime for Rick Perry

Los Angeles (CNN) - It is fitting that Rick Perry will take the stage in his first presidential debate just a short drive from Hollywood.

After a quick and relatively easy ride to the top of the GOP field in less than a month, the Texas governor now has to perform. And for many conservatives, the Reagan Presidential Library is a solid scene-setter for a classic California western. Make that a wild west shootout for Perry, who will probably see attacks coming from all sides.
