Perry still smiling after rough-and-tumble debate

Boston, Massachusetts (CNN) - The night after fielding blistering attacks for his views on Social Security, a jovial Rick Perry told a Boston audience he was the only GOP candidate willing to fix the entitlement program.

The Texas governor, who has repeatedly called Social Security a "Ponzi scheme," was the focus of sustained criticism at the CNN/Tea Party Debate Monday. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said using the term "Ponzi scheme" was "over the top, unnecessary and frightening" to Americans.

GOP pushes back on jobs bill, Dems worry about 'cherry picking'

Washington (CNN) - Congressional Republicans Tuesday dismissed the President Obama's proposal to offset the costs of his jobs bill through tax increases on higher income workers, but signaled they still want to work with the president to get at least some pieces of his economic plan through Congress.

"When you look at what we saw in the president's pay-fors yesterday, we see permanent tax increases put into effect in order to pay for temporary spending. I just don't think that's really going to help our economy the way it could," House Speaker John Boehner said.

Deficit commission gets a tighter deadline than expected

Washington (CNN) - A special congressional committee charged with forging a deficit reduction deal by Thanksgiving has to make final decisions weeks earlier in order to have time to analyze the plan's cost and draft it into legislation, the head of the Congressional Budget Office said Tuesday.

Doug Elmendorf, who directs the nonpartisan CBO that provides authoritative analyses of legislation, told the panel an agreement must be reached by the beginning of November to leave enough time for the "scoring" of the measure by the November 23 deadline.

CNN Poll: President gets no bounce from speech, but disapproval rating peaks

Washington (CNN) – President Barack Obama didn't score any political points with his speech on jobs to a joint session of Congress last Thursday. According to a new CNN/ORC International poll released Tuesday, the president's approval rating stands at 43 percent, virtually unchanged from the 45 percent approval rating in the previous CNN poll.

Although this is not the lowest number of those who say they approve of how Obama is handling his job-he reached 42 percent one year ago-the number who disapprove of the president reached its highest during his presidency in the poll.
