Cain on the United Nations: I would 'shake them up'

(CNN) - Two days before the United Nations General Assembly meets in New York, GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain said he would change the rules at the U.N. if he becomes president.

"My approach to the United Nations would be to shake them up," Cain said firmly on Saturday at a town hall in South Carolina.

The former CEO of Godfather's Pizza, who's struggling to break into the double-digits in national polls as a 2012 candidate, charged the organization with not giving America "its due," considering the amount of money it receives from the U.S.

According to the U.N.'s budget for 2011, the U.S. was the largest contributor with close to $583 million in member fees.

"I'm not ready to end it at this point, but I am ready to make sure that we get a bigger voice in the decisions that need to be made," said Cain.

The White House hopeful recalled a conversation he had with an unnamed former ambassador, who said there were ways to "create a hurricane" at the United Nations and restructure the rules.

"And I said my name is Cain," said the Republican. "So I'm all prepared for a hurricane."

While not a key topic of discussion in the 2012 presidential race, the issue over U.S. partnership with the United Nations has long been a concern among conservative Republicans.

Many in the GOP criticize the United Nations as an ineffective entity and argue that American involvement denotes a significant threat to national sovereignty.

Proponents of the U.N. say the organization is a necessary force to aid in peacekeeping and international development.

The 66th session of the General Assembly begins Monday, with Palestinians expecting to make headlines by applying for full membership.

For once I agree with him. The U.S. needs to stop payments to the UN, tell them to get the hell out of NYC. We don't need them here. They are full of crooks and liars. Without U.S. support the UN would fail.

Get the US out of the UN. Globalization is killing this country and our sovereignty. Our Supreme Court shouldn't be citing foreign laws, our citizens shouldn't have to worry about being subject to UN taxation, and I will never give up my guns for the sake of conforming to a "supranational authority."

What a moron. The rules at the UN are set by the member states, not the president of the US.

The United nations would not be under your control if you were president, Heaven forbid! They are guests on our soil and what you would would do would, like most of the republican right wing loony tunes talk be counter productive!

Any other questions about Cain's ability to be POTUS?

If the UN becomes controlled by the US it will drive the other countries away and become irrelevant. The last thing we need is the UN being dismantled and then reforming again without the US.

Do you think the US should be isolated from the rest of the world? If so, elect this schmuck.

This man has been speaking to neo-con John Bolton, who was wrong about US foreign policy so often that he is an embarrassment to the UP posting. Cain himself does not understand that most Americans are moderates and respect the UN's role in Bosnia, the Middle East and recently in North Africa. It is certainly a better finctioning organization that the House of Representatives with the GOP in the majority!

Cain is all bluster, but will never have a chance to do anything because no1 will vote for him! He's "window dressin" to prove that Teapublicans are as progressive & anti-bigoted as the next guy (or the Dems)! If he actually did have a chance to become president, it would be a scary proposition, since he out TeaParties the staunchest teapartiers! He is so ultra conservative & faaaar right he's a downright radical! Not to mention arrogant, as this article clearly illustrates!!

Wow. Since we pay more.... we should get a bigger voice? Isn't the UN based on a democratic model where you get one vote regardless of how much you pay in dues?

Oh wait a minute... Cain is referring to the GOP version of democracy. The one where you pay a lot of money to get politicians to do what you want. Just ask Perry and Merck.

    GOP motto:
"Let me focus on nonsense when there's real work to be done. Can I distract you into looking at this shiny object instead of how we just want to remove all regulations that protect you, fight against anything that may improve the economy, try to dismantle Social Security and Medicare, handcuff the EPA, fight for tax cuts for the wealthy but against tax cuts for you and try to regulate women's reproductive issues? Ooooh, here's something shiny for you to focus on and be riled up about while we go about our destructive policies."

Stop falling for it! Vote out every single Republican in 2012 so we can get this country back on track.

Herman if you miraculously won the GOP nomination.. Obama beating you in the main election would be the most publicized black on black crime ever committed.

This Idiot don't even know that the U.S. don't run the United Nations. So he couldn't do a hole lot but make other country mad at Us. The way these Republican and Tea Party people are going It going to be Us against the world.I don't think any of them know what the hell they are doing. Thing keep going the way thing are going America Is going to be In a lot of trouble. I think we need to get People In Congress and the senate that what to work for the American People , and a President that will stand up to anything or anybody. And the Tea Party are not the One that will do this. We need smart People ,not these dummy the Tea Party trying to put In Office.

This man is right. The UN is a threat to the US. Changes need to be made or we cut way back on support. I'll vote for that and the Republicans need to get on the bandwagon.

The former CEO of Godfather's Pizza, who's struggling to break into the double-digits in national polls as a 2012 candidate,

Zogby released a poll on September 13 that has Herman Cain in third place amongst 2,000 likely gop primary voters and Gallop released a poll last week that shows that Cain has a positive intensity score that is second only to Rick Perry amongst likely gop voters who know recognized his name. He is achieving this with only roughly 50% of registered republicans nationally knowing of his candidacy. Obviously the polls that show Cain below double digits could be seen as outliers and not true measurements of the strength of his candidacy.

This clown continues to spout foolishness. Bush's disrespect for the UN led to a war in Iraq that had no threat to the U.S. You can't shake up the UN like pizza dough birdbrain.
