Poll: Palin making gains but most in GOP don't want her to run

(CNN) - While she still hasn't made up her mind on a run for the White House, a new national poll suggests that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is making gains against President Barack Obama in a hypothetical 2012 general election matchup.

According to a McClatchy-Marist survey, the GOP's 2008 vice presidential nominee trails Obama 49 to 44 percent in a hypothetical showdown, after trailing by 21 points in an August poll and 26 points in a June survey. The poll indicates that Palin now leads the president among crucial independent voters.

But while the survey, which was released Tuesday, indicates Palin may be closing the gap with the president, it also suggests that most Republicans are not enthusiastic about her launching a bid for the nomination. By a 72 to 24 percent margin, Republicans and independents who lean toward the GOP do not want Palin to run for the White House.

As for her plans for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, Palin says they’re still up in the air.

"I think people are still going to be coming and going because there is still time, and I'm still one of those still considering," she said Tuesday night in an interview on the Fox News Channel.

But Palin did acknowledge that the calendar will soon force a decision, as some of the early voting states in the primary and caucus season have November deadlines for candidates to appear on the ballot.

"You have to start getting your ducks lined up to have your names on these ballots," said Palin. "But I do think this is going to be such an unconventional election cycle … A lot is going to happen in these next fourteen months. Mark my word, it is going to be an unconventional type of election process."

According to the poll, 49 percent say they definitely plan to vote against the president next year, with 36 percent saying they definitely plan to support Obama. By a 53 to 28 percent margin, independents say they plan to vote against the president in November 2012.

The poll indicates that Texas Gov. Rick Perry leads the field in the race for the GOP presidential nomination, with the support of 30 percent of Republicans and independents who lean toward the GOP. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who's making his second run for the White House, received 22 percent support. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota was at 12 percent, with everyone else in the single digits.

In hypothetical 2012 general election matchups, the survey shows Obama with a two point margin over Romney, 46 to 44 percent, and the president with a nine point advantage, 50 to 41 percent, over Perry.

The McClatchy-Marist poll was conducted September 13-14, after the CNN/Tea Party Republican debate in Tampa, Florida, with 1,042 adults questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

  1. What!!?!

I dare you to run Palin. Everything you've worked so hard to attain would be lost. Bye-bye to the celeb status. Bye-bye to the easy money at Fox News. Bye-bye to people who believe you have the ability to lead.

When people find out they've been duped, they become very angry. You would become a nobody, instantly. C'mon, I dare you. Put it all on the line......declare you candidacy or get out of the way.

Not much of a news story, because A) Palin will never give up the Gadfly Gravy Train to run for office, and her campaign would implode within minutes in an environment where unfiltered, uncontrolled questions could be asked, and B) it isn't that Palin has risen in the polls; it's that Obama has dropped nearly to the same depths Palin inhabits.

Ms. Palin is a certified narcissistic sociopath who will do anything for attention and money. I have some serious doubts about the credibility of the polls cited; however, if any significant portion of the American voting public feels Sarah Palin is a good candidate for President, we have lost our collective minds-–and the best days of America are far behind us. This is very disturbing and depressing news.

Her handlers in Alaska used to call ahead into her office
to warn her staff about what kind of mood she was in each day.
You want to put that near the launch codes ???

One of the main reasons sited for McCain's was his choice of Palin for VP. So, if people wouldn't vote for her for VP, what makes anyone think she could win the Presidential race?

"The poll indicates that Palin now leads the president among crucial independent voters"
What have you folks at CNN been smokin'? No way Palin leads Obama among independent voters, unless you took the poll in a redneck retirement home for the wealthy. Get real! Your polls are useless and your verbage is tantamount to yellow journalism. You've become the Fox News of on-line sites. Here's some advice - stop with the sensationalism, trying to raise eyebrows and stir up controversy, and start reporting hard-hitting, factual news. CBS and the BBC are way ahead of you!

But Sarah is America's sweetheart – isn't she? Doesn't she say she is? How can anyone not love her? How can anyone not support her for President? Hasn't she demonstrated her capacity for leadership as Governor of Alaska?

@Palinpower, don't count on it. Also you mentioned all of the states where people live in the backwoods and do not come out becasue they are afraid of people that do not look like them. You poor delusional idiot. How much money did you give her? You can kiss it goodbye. If you think times are tough now, wait until one of your precious repug/tea partiers win the nomination, you will then understand what is going on when you here them actually try to debate with such stupid solutions for America. They are going to have to steal the election to win, which they are working on right now . So it is okay to you that they are trying to deny people the right to vote in those same states that you mentioned? You are still living in the 60's. Grow up and think for yourself. You really need to read a little more and stop believing everything that the lying, fear-mongering, racists repug/tea partiers are telling you. Everyone sees it but you backward thinking people.

It's the pity factor. People are mad about Whatshisface's tell-all book about her and she is capitalizing on that "victim" persona she embraces so well.

Just goes to show you, though, how the whim of American voters can turn on a dime. The flavor of the day is what they go for, so if Minnie Mouse decides to run next year some time, polls will show most voters going for her. If Minnie declares she's a Born-Again Christian, ALL voters will go for her.

Palin is a dithering coward and has no intention of running for President because she knows she would suffer the greatest defeat in American political history. Unfortunately, we will have to continue listening to the screaming banshee because she is the loudest, and most obnoxious, voice coming from the reactionary right.

"Sarah has ruffled the feathers of The Republican Establishment even greater than the Democrats. Neither side can "buy" her and that earns my vote!"
Because both sides know she is a mess is all the reason you need to vote for her? Way to explore the issues there.

"So to what benefit does any candidate do for themselves by declaring early? None! She is doing a masterful job of not letting the media make decisions for her.
    Way cool Sarah..."
Actually what she is doing is really hurting the GOP. Right now people are going back and forth, each candidate talking smack about each other with no one clear leader. Palin is helping to drag that out because people are waiting to see what she does. If she just came out and said I am not running and I am supporting 'A' then the race more or less ends with 'A' almost certainly getting the nomination and the GOP starting to build the person up early. The longer it drags the longer the in-fighting continues.

72% of Republicans don't want her to run, but about 90% of Democrats do"
Oh heck yeah we do, you would hear the democrat cheer across the pond if she announced she was running.

"Be afraid Socialists Liberal Democrats......be very afraid of the next President Sarah Palin!"
If you think she will be president I am more afraid of you having any sharp objects, you might hurt yourself.

And really, just remember all the popularity Trump got during his brief time in the spotlight.

Wow. I had no idea that Independent voters were so stupid. Then again, as their name implies, this is a group who lives on the fence, never really knowing how they feel about a candidate until its time to pull the lever–and even then, they probably just toss a coin. Yeah, a pretty stupid group.

She is the leading candidate of the white tea party of America, I am so enthralled by the adoring look she gets from her white companions in this picture. Never see anything other than that around these fools, why is that? I guess that makes me paranoid as opposed to observant.

You know American is in a losing battle for it's existance when Palin is up in the polls and SAT Scores are down in the nation. It means America is slowly sinking to the level of intelligence of Palin and her thugs.

Another example of how Obama is continuing to ruin this country. If he wasn't such a disaster of a President, someone like Palin wouldn't even be discussed as a potential candidate.

God help us all if either of these two get elected in 2012.

Look, if she can't make up her mind to run, why are you giving here any credence at all? So what, she'll jump in at the last minute so she won't have to do any debates or give any platform or face any real scrutiny. What a waste of news print.
