Poll: Palin making gains but most in GOP don't want her to run

(CNN) - While she still hasn't made up her mind on a run for the White House, a new national poll suggests that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is making gains against President Barack Obama in a hypothetical 2012 general election matchup.

According to a McClatchy-Marist survey, the GOP's 2008 vice presidential nominee trails Obama 49 to 44 percent in a hypothetical showdown, after trailing by 21 points in an August poll and 26 points in a June survey. The poll indicates that Palin now leads the president among crucial independent voters.

But while the survey, which was released Tuesday, indicates Palin may be closing the gap with the president, it also suggests that most Republicans are not enthusiastic about her launching a bid for the nomination. By a 72 to 24 percent margin, Republicans and independents who lean toward the GOP do not want Palin to run for the White House.

As for her plans for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, Palin says they’re still up in the air.

"I think people are still going to be coming and going because there is still time, and I'm still one of those still considering," she said Tuesday night in an interview on the Fox News Channel.

But Palin did acknowledge that the calendar will soon force a decision, as some of the early voting states in the primary and caucus season have November deadlines for candidates to appear on the ballot.

"You have to start getting your ducks lined up to have your names on these ballots," said Palin. "But I do think this is going to be such an unconventional election cycle … A lot is going to happen in these next fourteen months. Mark my word, it is going to be an unconventional type of election process."

According to the poll, 49 percent say they definitely plan to vote against the president next year, with 36 percent saying they definitely plan to support Obama. By a 53 to 28 percent margin, independents say they plan to vote against the president in November 2012.

The poll indicates that Texas Gov. Rick Perry leads the field in the race for the GOP presidential nomination, with the support of 30 percent of Republicans and independents who lean toward the GOP. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who's making his second run for the White House, received 22 percent support. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota was at 12 percent, with everyone else in the single digits.

In hypothetical 2012 general election matchups, the survey shows Obama with a two point margin over Romney, 46 to 44 percent, and the president with a nine point advantage, 50 to 41 percent, over Perry.

The McClatchy-Marist poll was conducted September 13-14, after the CNN/Tea Party Republican debate in Tampa, Florida, with 1,042 adults questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

  1. Oh, that Mitt!

'Personally, I like her. She has a lot of common sense...'----You can NOT be serious. Even IF she did have common sense, which she doesn't, that would make up for all her other baggage? As if common sense were THAT hard to come by that we'd have to settle for a below-average educated, unqualified, divisive corporate shill?

I'm certain that 'unconventional' is code for : I will not debate, I will not hold an unscripted press conference, I will not talk to any media but Fox, I will not release my financial records, I will not release medical records, I will use my children in any way that will help me win votes, I will not be anyone's VP candidate. Good luck with that, Sarah. The US is not Alaska. Not by a long shot.

Let’s be honest, Sarah Palin has about as much chance of being elected as Donald Trump, and he’s not even running!

    You’re fired!

@founders1791: I sure hope you;re joking. Palin is the biggest crony capitalist there is. She 'gave up' that cushy Governor's job to become a multimillionaire. She put her high school buddies in $100,000 positions in Alaska that they had no qualifications for. She took oil taxes and handed them out like candy in Alaska to boost her ratings, yet she won't call that socialism. Corruption is her friend. You may want to research her somewhere other than Fox...you know, just to be fair.

Feel her fundamentalist wrath, you libs. She will leap tall buildings in a single bound, without being at the end of a straw ( well, at least not right now!)

    Gotcha! ( wink-wink).

    You made a good point.

Lobbyists have corrupted the political process, since the administration of Ulysses S. Grant.

Sadly our politicians are all too eager (greedy) to take their money, thereby making themselves beholden to the corporations and wealthy individuals and interests, which corrupt them and the political process.

Thank you, Washington and local politicians for your lack of integrity and for selling out our country.

This poll seems to be an accurate reflection of the stupidity of the voters of this country. Anyone who would vote for Palin needs to have their head examined.

Palin has common sense? Uhhhh? She knows about foreign policy because she can see Russia? The woman cannot even remember magazines that she reads, how is she supposed to manage a country?

    Founders 1791:
You just cant deal with facts and historical proof. It is an actual fact in history that Sarah palin is NOT an honest person, and while she claimed she was against corruption, she was commiting acts of corruption, these are legal facts that are on record in the great state of Alaska, they cannot be denied. She took a guaranteed risk that when she quit in the midst of corruption that she would avoid prosecution, at the same time she was guaranteed a boat load of money in the private sector, so dont try and twist the facts and say she took an unselfish risk.

@ whoever wrote this sage piece of advise: "Listen to you pathetic libs! Your lame comments proves your fear that your dear leader will get beat by a woman who stands for truth. Anyone but obama is the new catch phrase and we have almost 1 year left till this i d i o t is booted from OUR White House! Bye Bye "Mr worst president in my lifetime"!"

Can we at least wait and see who is first nominated to run against Obama before we "pathetic libs" (your words, not mine) start shaking in fear? Much less time consuming for us.

    @The Real Tom Paine
If the corruption is that apparent, why has the House not investigated?

THEY ARE.....The list gets longer and stronger by the day....

    (1) "Fast and Furious Gun Running" that led to the death of Americans. Cover ups by this administration being exposed "right now" in the House. The Gun shop owner....get this......tape recorded the BATF agents.....this is another "Clinton Dress" piece of evidence that has the potential to bring down Holder and possibly Obama.

    (2) "The Green Campaign" of spreading taxpayer dollars to "his campaign donors" with Solyndra being just the tip of the iceberg is being investigated by the House and FBI right now. Of all the potential breaches of law, this one is it. Remember Nixon' famous quote, "...it's the lie that will kill ya..."

    (3) Revolving door of Administrative Officials quitting office and going straight to "Their Crony Capitalist Friends" that will show huge conflicts of interests.

    The bottom line is this......

The Obama Administration has lied to the people when they claimed to be the "most open and transparent administration ever". They deserve to be crucified and his supporters, you, should throw him under the bus like Republicans did to HW Bush when lied to us back in 1992.

I have never been more embarrassed to be an American than I am by the present .... flock, herd, dumpster full of candidates being offered to U.S. Citizens today. Palin used to be the dumbest of the group, but some of these fools have actually taken her up to the level of total idiot as opposed to her previous status of COMPLETE idiot.

At this rate, by the time the election roll around, she may even be classified as high as moron. Assuming people like Perry and Bachman keep running.

Even notice that vampires and Democrats are both alike in that they foam at the mouth at the sight of a crucifix?

Any American who believes in freedom of religion and doesn’t display a total disregard for human life when they are behind the wheel votes Republican.

Just think of how many lives have been taken by the libs here at the ticker, driving while indoctrinated (Democrat) puts driving while intoxicated to shame.

I suggest you go to the bluest parts of America like Snooki-land, northern Jersey and New York and witness how Democrats interact with their fellow Americans. If you have even an ounce of decency and good in your heart, you will forever be a Republican voter.

I wish she would run and put some dents in Rick Perry. I am a democrat but feel the country would be OK with either Romney or Obama as President. Not so with Perry.

Libs love to attack but missing from their attacks are any real examples or facts to back up what they are saying. There is a reason for that, everything to ever come out of the mouth of a Democrat is a lie, they think the truth is a hate crime.

You may find a few Republicans saying crude things, certainly nothing remotely close to that of the average Democrat, but everytime the Republican will offer facts and real life examples to back up what they say. That's the difference, a pretty big one for those of us who have values and morals.

Founders 1791: You are in a [low] class by yourself.

Also, the article indicates the number of people who were polled was 1,042 "adults". That is .0000000000000000000000000001 percent of the population (yes, I'm exaggerating on that fraction). So, this poll doesn't matter. Who is Mcclatchy – Marist anyway? Sounds like a bull to me. I suppose anyone can put their name on a poll and consider it legitimate. Well, I've got to get back to my nap zzzzzzzzz.

Sarah is going to string her sheep along as long as she can. She has never had any plans on running for president. She would have to come outside of her Fox/Hannity pre-scripted safety bubble.

I wonder Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Thomas Payne and Benjamin Franklin would say about the current condition of our country.

Of course the first thing they’d probably say is: Wow! Do the Philadelphia Phillies have an awesome pitching crew!

As the article states, there is an important independent vote and I am one of those votes. I resent Palin's game playing, the absence of detailed proposals and battle plans for the future...she needs to provid ethat if she wants to keep atacking everyone around her. If she does not, she just confirms to me what the obvious: she is out to promote her name via contradictory obstructionism (i.e, treachery to her country) that is damaging America. she disgusts me.
