Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama announced Friday that states will be allowed to opt out of certain requirements imposed by the controversial No Child Left Behind law, the landmark education reform initiative passed with broad bipartisan support a decade ago.
The administration will immediately begin reviewing state applications to waive various demands imposed by the law in return for credible commitments to close lingering achievement gaps.

And the GOP is calling this VOLUNTARY opt-out/waiver program that gives states and local governments an opportunity to take more control over their education systems, not less, a "power grab by the Obama administration." YAWN.
The huge drop in SAT scores shows how well No Child Left Behind works. You can't hold an entire class back because of one child. It needs to be done the way it was when we were in school many, many years ago. The faster kids go in one class. The childen that need more help, whether it be in English or Math, go into another class. That way, everyone gets the amount of help they need. My granddaughter was on a 4th grade level in 1st grade. The teacher told us to stop teaching her. NO WAY!! She is now taking AP courses and getting college credits as a freshman in high school. It was a very good thing that her parents moved to another school district.
Let teachers unions decide how to educate kids. They have done a wonderful job so far. Detroit is a shining example.
NCLB was a program started by Dubya Bush in Texas. Supported by the GOP. Enough said.
Can the country "opt out" of having to endure 16 more months of Obama's epically failed presidency?
Like most Republican Party legislation, this has a great title; who can be against "No Child Left Behind"?
The devil is always in the details; something the much more competent Democrats are better at.
If America was a corporation [and its NOT] the Republicans would be in Sales & Marketing and the Democrats would be the Chief Operating Officer.
"Tax Enough Already (TEA) " = a brilliant slogan. Fact is though, we`re paying the lowest taxes in history and have expanding obligations because of Republican Presidential rule in 28 years out of the last 44 years.
Raise the Capital Gains tax rate to 40% to 50%. Use the extra revenue to redeem the IOUs in the Social Security Piggy Bank. Pay Back the Money.
No Child Left Behind.....Bush left behind the funding for this program. Are you picking up the tab for this Mr. President, andonce again righting a wrong?
Obama 2012
The GOP Answer: the hard working rich kids get private schools, the poor kids get under-funded schools w/ crap lunches because their inferior parents...
So Obama wants to reward and protect the FAILURE to educate our children. So all the money spent on this was a waste and a joke!! Sorry, we can't educate the kids so the answer is to lower or eliminate the requirement to educate them?
THIS is exactly why the federal government should NOT be involved with the schools and the Dept. of Education (please change this to Dept. of Ignorance) should be abolished. Totally useless BS rules and regs and a bureacracy that costs us BILLIONS and the result is UNEDUCATED KIDS.
Obama and his union lackeys are complete and total failures.
I forgot that the GOP was for education as long as they didn't have to fund it.
The educated, however, came out in droves in 2008 to vote for Obama.
The GOP is now against education, and are doing their best to ensure that students are turned away at the polls thanks to their new voting laws.
The GOP: "I was for it until I was against it, which was always".
Ah, the legacy of Bush rises again, and yet do conservatives and Republicans admit to the tragedy it brought us? No, it's time to bash Obama again. So typical.
"So all the money spent on this was a waste and a joke!!"
Pretty much sums up everything GW put his hands on, doesn't it?
Thank Goodness! It was a Bush plan that was neither funded nor well thought out.
It's about time this horrific program is changed. How can taking away funding and therefore teachers help schools where children are struggling? Let's make sure there are 40 children in each class instead of the 30 that were already there, that way the teachers have more time to help each student! Brilliant. The Republicans would have everyone paying $25K a year, individually, for elementary school if they could. They seem to hate public schools.
Thank GOD George Bush put into place a system to determine just how poorly our kids are being educated by the unions. Of course the Democrats loved it because it was BILLIONS spent on "education". But George Bush out smarted the Dems by putting in metrics to judge the effectiveness of this education. The results are CLEAR. Democrats and their union lackeys ARE FAILURES no matter how much money they get. More and more money spent to get dumber and dumber kids. Such a deal!!! Any wonder why this country is heading down the crapper at lightspeed?
