Palin threatens lawsuit over book

(CNN) - One week after the release of a controversial book on Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor threatened to sue the book's author for including what her lawyer called a "series of lies and rumors presented as fact."

The book, "The Rogue," by Joe McGinniss, has received widespread attention since McGinniss moved in next door to Palin to begin writing in 2010.

Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House and publisher of the book, stood by the title and McGinniss.

"We are confident that the reporting in THE ROGUE is solid, reliable, and well-substantiated," said spokesman Stuart Applebaum in an email on Wednesday.

Shortly before the book hit shelves last week, Palin's husband, Todd, lashed out at McGinniss, saying the author had been "relentlessly" stalking his family and filled the book with "lies, innuendo and smears."

In a letter sent to the book's publisher, Crown Publishing Group, Palin's lawyer said Monday both McGinniss and Crown knowingly published false information and "defamed the Palins."

McGinniss has staunchly defended the title.

"Believe me, I'm so sick of Sarah Palin right now, that after this couple (of) weeks is over, I hope to never hear her name again," McGinniss said last week on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight."

McGinniss said that he had originally set out to write a book about Alaska, when Palin was picked as the 2008 vice presidential running mate for Sen. John McCain

"That made her synonymous with Alaska," McGinniss said. "My book about Alaska became a book about Sarah Palin."

The book has received criticism from a number of news outlets, including The New York Times, which said the book "chases caustic, unsubstantiated gossip."

It has also been hit with harsh reviews over its use of anonymous sources for stories about Palin’s past.

But McGinniss stands by the book's accuracy.

"Sarah Palin has lived an outrageous life," McGinniss said on CNN's "American Morning" last week. "All I did was talk to people about it, and they documented it for me. When I was comfortable with the veracity of what I heard, I put it into the book. There were a lot of things that I wasn't comfortable with, that I didn't put them in."

If she sued she may have to talk to more than the Fox Network. Gosh I wish this woman would just fade out and go away by golly!

Maybe President Obama and Michelle Obama should sue Sarah Palin for all the constant lies she's told about them. The Palin's got what they so dearly deserve. Anyway, she won't sue just like she won't run for POTUS (thank goodness).

If Palin retains good counsel, she will probably seek a settlement outside of court. A settlement could involve dollars, a forced retraction by the author/publisher, a combination of those things, and so on. If Sarah thinks the author went too far, and the publisher feels it's cheaper to pay outside of court, then you'll hear little about what the warring parties agree to do. From what I've read, the author is a sleaze. But is he a smart sleaze? Sarah may appear to be a clown to many here, but she is no fool, and now, she is someone who has money to burn. I for one wouldn't mess with her.

for them to win they would have to prove all of the things said in the book were false, in open court for everyone to see. I don't think she is ready for that

I have the strong feeling that McGinnis did his homework and his publisher's legal department gave him adequate warnings about what Palin and her camp might try to pull. I suspect that like all of those individuals who have attempted (unsuccessfully) to bring suits against Kitty Kelly, Palin will lose against McGinnis. But hey, look at it this way, she'll get a lot of free publicity and isn't that what she wants anyway? (Especially since everyone – hopefully by now – knows this woman is nothing more than a mouth blowing hot air.)

Mrs. Palin went on the road making several remarks about President Obama; they were untrue. Her choice of words was in fact made beleiveable to those whom she spoke too. Some was prejudice and some was not as funny as many may have assumed. Some words were insulting upon him; and while this continue during the elections era; while someone is writing a book and she is about the book, why now do she want's to sue? When you comment about someone else; you can also be commented about from someone else as well. Did President Obama sue her for saying things that were not true about thim? In Sarah Palin own words....this is a "Hocky-Mom's" event where we all can read about it!

Of course it’s wrong and unacceptable for anyone to make a false charge against anyone. This is reprehensible and shouldn’t be tolerated.

At the same time we appreciate and recognize the need for a free press and for free speech.

Naturally this creates difficulty in establishing what is true and what is false.

Surely there is no easy answer for this, other than to urge people to be very careful in bringing a charge against or a report about anyone; and , we should make sure that the charges we bring and reports we make are true and responsible.

And if they’re true we must accept personal responsibility for our mistakes and failings—and which of us has not made mistakes!

I’m reminded of what Moses said to the Israelites: Be sure, your sin will find you out!

I’m also reminded of the words of Jesus: “Do to others, as you would have others do to you”; and, “With what measure you judge others, so shall you also be judged”.
