Palin threatens lawsuit over book

(CNN) - One week after the release of a controversial book on Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor threatened to sue the book's author for including what her lawyer called a "series of lies and rumors presented as fact."

The book, "The Rogue," by Joe McGinniss, has received widespread attention since McGinniss moved in next door to Palin to begin writing in 2010.

Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House and publisher of the book, stood by the title and McGinniss.

"We are confident that the reporting in THE ROGUE is solid, reliable, and well-substantiated," said spokesman Stuart Applebaum in an email on Wednesday.

Shortly before the book hit shelves last week, Palin's husband, Todd, lashed out at McGinniss, saying the author had been "relentlessly" stalking his family and filled the book with "lies, innuendo and smears."

In a letter sent to the book's publisher, Crown Publishing Group, Palin's lawyer said Monday both McGinniss and Crown knowingly published false information and "defamed the Palins."

McGinniss has staunchly defended the title.

"Believe me, I'm so sick of Sarah Palin right now, that after this couple (of) weeks is over, I hope to never hear her name again," McGinniss said last week on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight."

McGinniss said that he had originally set out to write a book about Alaska, when Palin was picked as the 2008 vice presidential running mate for Sen. John McCain

"That made her synonymous with Alaska," McGinniss said. "My book about Alaska became a book about Sarah Palin."

The book has received criticism from a number of news outlets, including The New York Times, which said the book "chases caustic, unsubstantiated gossip."

It has also been hit with harsh reviews over its use of anonymous sources for stories about Palin’s past.

But McGinniss stands by the book's accuracy.

"Sarah Palin has lived an outrageous life," McGinniss said on CNN's "American Morning" last week. "All I did was talk to people about it, and they documented it for me. When I was comfortable with the veracity of what I heard, I put it into the book. There were a lot of things that I wasn't comfortable with, that I didn't put them in."

She complains about "lies, innuendo and smears"? Are you kidding me?!?!?!? This poor victim practically invented "lies, innuendo and smears" and now she has the nerve to complain when it comes back around to her. Totally pathetic...

She threatens on everything. She is going to do this, going to do that. This girl hasn't finished anything she has started. Sue away and let an open court decide whether she is crazy or crazier. Getting her under oath could be fun, especuially in a federal courtroom where lying on the stand can get you some serious jail time. I don't think she wants to be there because her mouth is running so often while her brain is still in "idle".

Pardon me, but isn't this woman supposed to be "anti-lawyer?" Oh, that's just when OTHER people want to sue for medical malpractice and a child will need a lifetime of special care.

Quite frankly I'm indifferent about Sarah Palin now. She's nothing but an "also ran" that won't go away.

Oh, let her sue. First of all, she has to find the correct venue. In this case, it would be in the judicial district where the publisher's office is. In this case, Crown is owned by Random House. That means New York City would be the venue. Like she's gonna prevail in court there. I wouldn't be surprised if not only does she lose and have to pay McGinniss and Random House damages and Court costs, but Harper Collins drops her like a hot rock. Then she will have to sell that luxury home of hers in Arizona and move to wherever the locals do not mind her being within an hour of them. There are probably still places in Northern Idaho that'll take her.

What a crock of crap. This book will make it all the easier for Sarah to bilk he adoring fans out of their hard earned money. Who does she thinks she's kidding? If the truth be known, she probably paid the guy to write the book in the first place.

This book seemed to be fading from the limelight. Now it gets a new shot in the arm. Great work Sarah! Boy, talk about the trial of the century!

This is the same blood-sucking shrew who whipped the Tea Party radicals into a frenzy over "Death Squads coming to get Granny" and the "Birther" dishonesty. How about the "Paling around with terrorists" line Sarah used so often? Lord knows the stuff she and her friends spew out on Fox News could never stand the test of "truthiness". Right-wingers hate their own medicine. I hope the counter-suits are already being prepared.

So the gist I'm getting from some of the comments already posted is that Gov. Palin has no right to sue over a book, that was even panned by the New York Times and almost certainly contains outright lies about her and her family, simply because of who she is? Oh you lovable libs, your derangement over this woman never ceases to amaze me.

  13. Republicans - The Not Intended To Be Factually Accurate" Party

She DOES NOT want Glenn Rice on the stand, Under Oath. Better think twice about this Sarah.

A sizable percentage of your most core, die hard, "don`t retreat; reload" customers [um, I mean supporters] will abandon you for giving into the "dark side".

The more you press this, the LESS you`ll EARN.

You won`t win a libel suit; McGunnis knows what to print & what not to. In fact, if you sue, I`ll bet the book makes the NYT best sellers list. You`ll end up buying him a Ferrai or something.

Hey Palin........who does this McGinniss guy pal around with? Does he, or does he not know about "death panels"? And on and on and on.......

The attack dogs of the Democrat party. This is what they do. It doesn't matter if they say the truth or not, it's their job to destroy the lives of people for money. Sounds more like the mafia than anything. How anyone can support this type of operation is beyond reason.

well sarah, you set yourself up for this stuff when you put your life in the public eye. If Barack Obama sued everyone that made false statements about him he would be in court for the rest of his life... How about sueing tina fey for partraying you so correctly ha ha ha ha

I thought big rough, tough republicans don't sue, you know tort reform and all that stuff. I usually find that they always want to limit your right to sue, but when they feel damaged or slighted, they are the first ones to run into court, like that nitwit from Delaware, Christine O'Donnell. After she lost the election, she threatened to sue the people that brought up the witchcraft story. Pure repub hypocrisy

Palin threatens a lot of things:
touring the nation on the bus – did she complete that? No.
running for the presidency – still dithering about it, apparently.
putting crosshairs on Gabby Giffords – now, that one she did do and speaking of lawsuits, if the Loughner trial ever gets underway and it is revealed that Loughner was influenced by Palin's putting Gabby in crosshairs, let's see how many lawsuits Palin will be facing herself.

ok, the author moving in next door IS creepy but there are several "facts" in the book that I've read from other sources as well that do not have ties to this author. Palins daughter getting pregnant on purpose was one that I've heard several times, the money hungry Palins is another story line that I've heard elsewhere too. So creepy is as creepy does but lets not be quick to label the author a dud.
