Palin threatens lawsuit over book

(CNN) - One week after the release of a controversial book on Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor threatened to sue the book's author for including what her lawyer called a "series of lies and rumors presented as fact."

The book, "The Rogue," by Joe McGinniss, has received widespread attention since McGinniss moved in next door to Palin to begin writing in 2010.

Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House and publisher of the book, stood by the title and McGinniss.

"We are confident that the reporting in THE ROGUE is solid, reliable, and well-substantiated," said spokesman Stuart Applebaum in an email on Wednesday.

Shortly before the book hit shelves last week, Palin's husband, Todd, lashed out at McGinniss, saying the author had been "relentlessly" stalking his family and filled the book with "lies, innuendo and smears."

In a letter sent to the book's publisher, Crown Publishing Group, Palin's lawyer said Monday both McGinniss and Crown knowingly published false information and "defamed the Palins."

McGinniss has staunchly defended the title.

"Believe me, I'm so sick of Sarah Palin right now, that after this couple (of) weeks is over, I hope to never hear her name again," McGinniss said last week on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight."

McGinniss said that he had originally set out to write a book about Alaska, when Palin was picked as the 2008 vice presidential running mate for Sen. John McCain

"That made her synonymous with Alaska," McGinniss said. "My book about Alaska became a book about Sarah Palin."

The book has received criticism from a number of news outlets, including The New York Times, which said the book "chases caustic, unsubstantiated gossip."

It has also been hit with harsh reviews over its use of anonymous sources for stories about Palin’s past.

But McGinniss stands by the book's accuracy.

"Sarah Palin has lived an outrageous life," McGinniss said on CNN's "American Morning" last week. "All I did was talk to people about it, and they documented it for me. When I was comfortable with the veracity of what I heard, I put it into the book. There were a lot of things that I wasn't comfortable with, that I didn't put them in."

I love it! All the Palin haters spewing venom and hatred at a woman that speaks her mind. It is great she controls your emotions as she does......I guess you could say she owns you. Ha!

Not filing a lawsuit would equate admission of guilt. And she never is.

Ok...the author is not going to release names of his sources. Can you imagine what would happen to them, at the hands of the Palins, if they found out what people said about them? I'm sure the majority of information is accurate.

Hmmm must be some truth in it if she's ready to sue. Wonder if she plans to sue Levi? Probably not since any money he makes saves her from taking care of Bristol! Enough already with this dysfunctional family!

ATTENTION CNN: Sarah Palin is not running for President – she is not a political figure. If you want to report about her then do it in the "Entertainment Section." I don't know who in your office has such a hard-on for Palin, but enough about her. I check in here for political news, not gossip about a half-term governor, even though she has a great rack.

Its freedom of speech, shes such a wimp, people spread rumors about you, you stand up and renounce them, not threaten a lawsuit about something that doesnt hurt you, everyone hates her anyway

Whether they are lies or fact, he has a right to publish them. That's part of Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press. If authors could get sued on accuracy, there'd be a lot of poor bestsellers.

If the writer didn't try to pass off gossip as fact, the publisher and the writer would not be in this position. Even the NY Times panned the book since none of the accussations made in it are backed by any fact whatsoever. It doesn't matter if you like Sarah Palin or not – what the writer and publisher did was wrong and anyone who isn't blinded by their adoration for democratic party can see it. No doubt the townspeople of Wasilla filled the writer's little head with fabulous tales and stories, but when it came time to prove them or even name a person as a source, it couldn't be done because they weren't true, so printing them was wrong. Even the National Enquirer usually has an element of truth to their stories and this book falls short of even that standandard.

"Does it bother no one else that this McGinniss moved in NEXT DOOR to the woman so he could write about her?"

Doesn't bother me one bit,.. Sarah moved from Alaska to the lower 48,.. to spread her hatred, lies, and vitriol.

I am still laughing about the fact that the McCain Campaign announced that Sarah Palin was vetted by the FBI, that fateful Friday in Dayton, Ohio, so very long ago, when McCain was dumped on by the GOP and Palin was forced on the McCain Campaign. The following Monday, the FBI issued a statement that read "The FBI does not vet political candidates". So, the McCain Camp never vetted Palin, and the rest is history. Every time anyone attempt to vet Sarah Palin, they are attacked or slandered by the Palin Family. See a pattern here?
