Cain: Black community 'brainwashed' into voting for Dems

Washington (CNN) - The one African-American running for the GOP presidential nomination said Wednesday the black community was 'brainwashed' for traditionally siding with liberal politicians.

"African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open minded, not even considering a conservative point of view," Godfather's Pizza executive Herman Cain said on CNN's "The Situation Room" in an interview airing Wednesday between 5-7 p.m. ET. "I have received some of that same vitriol simply because I am running for the Republican nomination as a conservative. So it's just brainwashing and people not being open minded, pure and simple."

Cain went on to explain that his interactions with African Americans led him to be optimistic about his own chances with the demographic.

"This whole notion that all African-Americans are not going to vote for Obama is not necessarily true," Cain said.

He continued, "I believe a third [of African-Americans] would vote for me, based on my own anecdotal feedback. Not vote for me because I'm black but because of my policies."

Cain also weighed in on the recent chatter surrounding Chris Christie, saying the recent reports the New Jersey governor is reconsidering a run for president were hurting the electorate.

"It's not insulting as much as it is a disservice to the American people," Cain said. "Chris Christie has been saying for a long time he's not interested in running. The media is trying to create a story by sucking Chris Christie into race, just like they made a story by sucking Rick Perry into the race."

Cain said the media should focus on the candidates who have already declared their candidacy to give voters a better idea of the field.

Watch The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer weekdays at 4pm to 6pm ET and Saturdays at 6pm ET. For the latest from The Situation Room click here.

judging from cain's bitter remark ("wah im not getting the vote from 'my people' so clearly they are brainwashed") and half of the commenters here, america is doomed.

I love all the t/per Caucasians commenting on their extensive knowledge of growing up black in white America. The 60s were a time of change in the political power structure. LBJ used his bully pulpit by doing the right thing for ALL Americans and because he saw blacks as ALL Americans too, the racists jumped ship and ran to the repubs. Been that way ever since. Of course come the ignorant handout comments but the fact is the majority of blacks and minorities in general do work. ALL people vote their interests, even if they hold their nose and do it, no matter what situation their in. The majority of Americans are not millionaires or billionares, or CEOs of large corporations killing the mom and pop store on the corner. Its not a black/white thing. BTW, if you right wing posters want credibility from people who read your posts, stop using words like obummie and handouts. Why would I want to vote for a party that panders to children? From a working black man that doesn't accept "handouts" concerned for his country.

  4. The Truth Hurts

Cain is right. Ask a Black person why they vote democrat. Then ask them what they're getting for their votes. Blacks are so used to being given something for nothing that's half of what's wrong with the community to begin with. They got zero by voting for Obama. They didn't even get a backbone to stand up straight with. (The most black people don't need a handout, they are hard working citizens, but those who do want subsidy vote democrat even when they don't know why) How many jobs did Obama create for this country? Rob the rich give to the poor. Yes let's keep giving and giving and giving so that they forget what their knees are for and they can't stand up on their own. The democratic party has ruined the black community.

Although I have only skimmed the replies to this, I find a fascinating and disturbing trend amongst the Cain haters as to be barely literate and devoid of any actual original or rational thought. Whoops! Sorry!!!! You are the folk that elected the current train wreck in office. My bad.

I think Herman Cain is more in touch with what the black community needs/wants than Barack Obama. But more importantly I think Herman Cain is really in touch with what we need to do fiscally. A business is only successful if it makes a profit. Our country can't be economically successful unless we follow a similar model. So I guess CNN is suggesting whats more important...Herman Cain thinks black ppl are weak minded & easily influenced???

  7. Wake Up!

    @woman in california
We don't need to make obama fail, he is doing that with no help of ours. Here's the difference between reps and dems. When obama got voted into office I GENUINELY hoped and prayed that he would be the greatest president in the last 100 years. I hoped that he would succeed. Sadly he didn't, he decided not to listen to the people, decided to just push his own agenda (like every other politician in the last 20 years). Now, whe a republican gets voted into office dems want to demonize them immediately. they want to paint him as the bad-guy. that's the difference between dems and republicans. reps care about our country and hope for its success while dems hate our country and pray for its demise. (I'm generalizing here, I know not every rep/dem acts or feels this way.)

Liberals are brainwashed, black, white, brown.
they somehow believe they have a lock on what's right, what's compassionate, how to run everyone else's life and even which words and beliefs are correct.
And lord help anyone who differs with them ... In their our way is the only right way world, that makes everyone else not only wrong but men, evil, racist, stupid.... You see evidence of this every time they get worked up about something.
it really is odd how they can' see it about themselves.

Cain makes sense. The black community has been brainwashed! If we all can be honest...neither party as done anything for the black community. I take that back. They have built more jails and prisons.

Looking over the comments, why did all of the liberals decide to do the opposite when obama call for "civility" not so long ago?
Nothing but the most vitriolic hate, slander, and lies. All the more scary as all of the childish name calling is either written by or for the "sixth grade education and below" set.

By all means, black folk should stick with the Dixiecrats, they will give a majority of you just enough freebies to hold their control, try to remember though, it was a Republican (Lincoln) that sacrificed all them white boys to end slavery and it was the Dems. that fought tooth and nail to maintain segregation in the 60s, Look for the big D and pull that lever.Stay down and be a victim, or raise your standards of living with opportunities given to you by a business friendly government. You do have a choice, now make it.

"That's really weird seeing Cain accusing someone of being brainwashed.
Repubs serve the corporations and Dems serve the public"

Talk about brainwashed! Think what you meant to say was "public service UNIONS"!!!

I'm not surprised that CNN is dominated with a bunch of extremely angry, envious and ignorant liberals making a bunch of insane comments that they can't back up with any facts, only pure... ignorant emotions. Cain, is correct. The best way to help a person is to give them a hand up, an opportunity to make something of their life, not a hand out as is the democrats way of keeping the chains around their ankles to keep political power. Enough with the partisanship, Republicans aren't Nazis or racists and neither are the democrats. How about we start backing up our statement with facts and truth. Not just pure partisan, ignorant hate.

I can see why minorities are so offended as they look at how much better there lives are after investing in the Democrats all these years.... oh wait, never mind. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Yes those evil corporations that provided jobs to all the people in the past are now running out of the country to china. So has this made you lives better? Taxing the rich and corporations will never put a paycheck in your pocket as we have seen. Every dollar a person spends that has a job turns over 12 times in an economy generating 12 (x12) more jobs = 144 = 20,000 = +++ .... from those .... get the picture? No companies small or large and no $$$, no turnover, no employment.... Democrats know desperate dependent people are great voters. Keep listening to the Dems and we will some see the 40% unemployment I saw in Africa from the people that catered to the working (now nonworking) class.

If the GOP really had its way, you know they would dismantle welfare, eliminate all affirmative action, cut the minimum wage, and deny healthcare to millions of poor black. Their platform is just an all-out assault on the poor, many of whom happen to be black. For centuries in America blacks were treated as less than human and even today there are gross inequalities in terms of access to education, jobs, and healthcare.

Does Cain think all blacks have 'Jay-Z money'?

I've said from the beginning that Obama got 95% of the black vote: if he had been conservative he would have gotten 100%.

Democrats help the African American community in the same way that well-intentioned, yet ultimately naive and destructive enablers help drug addicts: they give them everything they want, regardless of the consequences;. no sacrifice or personal responsibility is required of the recipient. Dems are just the benevolent, unintentionally condescending, do-good daddies, taking care of the helpless, selfish, ever-victimized man-childs – otherwise known as African Americans.

Cain is right, and iI love these comments I am reading. I can't believe how stupid people are. "Republicans were against the Civil rights act" LOL!! Look it up moron, 80% of Republicans voted for it while only 60% of Democrats did. What do you think the Civil war was about idiot? It was about DEMOCRATS wanting to keep blacks as slaves while Republicans like LINCOLN did not.

    Wakeup "RUDY NYC"
This is what Cain is completely right on, you have been brainwashed about history, please read a little, open your eyes and stop marching in lock step with the democrats talking points or want you did not learn in school. If you want to learn you will see everything you commented on was really "in most cases" the democrats that held up many of the items you blame the other party for! you are truely brainwashed.

16.7% Black unemployment. 60% Bllack Youth unemployment. Homelessness was down 30% during Bush administration. Homelessness is up 45% with Obama Adminisyration. President Obama is reffectionatly known as the "Food Stamp" President... Food stamp use up 45%. The facts speak for themselves. Reas through the lines. Cain ( note the spelling) is an American Dream come true. Hard work and self determination got him where he is to day. Not legal tricks, playing the system and affirmative action.
