Cain: Black community 'brainwashed' into voting for Dems

Washington (CNN) - The one African-American running for the GOP presidential nomination said Wednesday the black community was 'brainwashed' for traditionally siding with liberal politicians.

"African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open minded, not even considering a conservative point of view," Godfather's Pizza executive Herman Cain said on CNN's "The Situation Room" in an interview airing Wednesday between 5-7 p.m. ET. "I have received some of that same vitriol simply because I am running for the Republican nomination as a conservative. So it's just brainwashing and people not being open minded, pure and simple."

Cain went on to explain that his interactions with African Americans led him to be optimistic about his own chances with the demographic.

"This whole notion that all African-Americans are not going to vote for Obama is not necessarily true," Cain said.

He continued, "I believe a third [of African-Americans] would vote for me, based on my own anecdotal feedback. Not vote for me because I'm black but because of my policies."

Cain also weighed in on the recent chatter surrounding Chris Christie, saying the recent reports the New Jersey governor is reconsidering a run for president were hurting the electorate.

"It's not insulting as much as it is a disservice to the American people," Cain said. "Chris Christie has been saying for a long time he's not interested in running. The media is trying to create a story by sucking Chris Christie into race, just like they made a story by sucking Rick Perry into the race."

Cain said the media should focus on the candidates who have already declared their candidacy to give voters a better idea of the field.

What a nitwit. If anyone has been brainwashed, it is him. He's been brainwashed into thinking he is white and will get some of the spoils that white republicans get. By the way, so is buddy Alan West down in Florida. They better look in the mirror or at the calendar so they can see what time it is.

If Martin Luther King would have known you'd all be Democrats after he died, he wouldn't have bothered with you. You follow an African that sold your family to muslim slave traders, and vote for the very slave owning party that put you in chains. Amazing.

Cain is correct. But honestly, if you are this stupid, I don't want you voting for anything but the communist/democratic party. Stay right there. You don't wanna leave without getting what you've sewn.

If MLK (a republican) was alive, he would weep. As one of many AA republicans who understood who took a stand for their community. If believing that republicans never did anything for AA is not brainwashing (and reading the comments above just gives you an idea of how deep the brainwashing is), how would you call it?

Never mind that the States that resisted equal rights in the south were all run by democrats, never mind that Richard Nixon open quotas for AA in Federal government to remedy the injustice committed by Woodward Wilson (D) when he fired every single black working in government.

Brainwashing or pure ignorance, that's what I see on this posting board. Very sad indeed.

I see everyone here slam the "other" party. But you guys never offer solutions to "OUR" problems. Both Dems and Repubs got us into this mess... make no mistake on that. As long as there are people out there who are more interested in name calling and coming up with cute acronyms to slam others we will never move forward. Let's try to growup and take our predicament seriously. If you truly believe ONLY one party has caused this problem. You are sorely IGNORANT and that truly saddens me.!

All of this back and forth and name calling and history "lessons' that are going on here is really beside the point. What Mr. Cain has done is propose a plan for taxation that is fair to everyone and in the country's best interest. This means prosperity for all. Gov't spending is taxation. I think that the incapable should be helped in a civilized society, but able bodied people should not be given a free pass at the expense of anyone, even those more fortunate people living on inheritance. These able bodied people should be given the landscape to be able to succeed, but should contribute their fair share, almost as payment for the opportunity they are afforded. This is one purpose of Government, to ensure the opportunity to do something with your life. This is what the likes of Cain and Ron Paul are offering, why would the black community not want this? Can anyone answer why the black community would not want the opportunity to prosper? (keep in mind under the current situation, if our system does help you become successful, then you'll paying the same excessive taxes as the 'rich whites'.

In my opinion, anyone who is a Republican and is not among the top 3% richest is brainwashed.

The Republican agenda is to help the rich get richer and keep labor cost down. Meaning the 97% stay poor.

The whole Christian and anti abortion thing is just to attract votes of the hard core church goers. They don't really care about them, just their votes.

It take a lot of poor people to make one rich person and they intend to keep it that way.

Unbelievable that people think the republicans opposed the Civil Rights Act – it was LBJ and the Dixiecrats (all Dems) that blocked it and the GOP that pushed it through. It was Clinton that passed Don't Ask Don't Tell, not the GOP. Good god, this is recent history and you have no clue. Talk about brainwasing!

Also, it's not surprising to see the left here denigrate Cain, calling him Pizza Man etc. His resume is a mile deep compared to the current president who will still know almost nothing about. Cain has a degree in math, was a rocket scientist for the Navy, then got a Master's degree in computer science and became a hugely successful businessman. But to the left he's an Uncle Tom, Pizza Man. Pathetic.

Cain not only appears to be a decent intelligent man, he is one who pulls no punches....very refreshing. Pity, that since obama has pulled the race card out of the deck so often, that this comment, if spoken by a White candidate, would have drawn the ire of the media, black caucus, black panthers, school teachers, morgan freeman, unions, illegal aliens...all of those who put this idiot into the WH 2.5 yrs ago.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. What party has been running local and city governments for years? Democrats! And look where this has gotten you. Get your head out of your butts and think for yourselves.

Wow, looks like the crew that plants responses at the WH are hot on this issue. Obama's been counting on the black vote completely. He must have his shorts in a wad with Herman Cain's popularity. I'm loving it.

When I lived in Atlanta I had the opportunity to hear Mr. Cain's radio show. I was sold on this man back then and I will vote for him now given the opportunity. I truly believe that he will do whatever he can to turn the economy around. I hope that the voters can see past all the vitriol, hatred, and grandstanding. We need someone in our top office that will roll up his sleeves and get to work to make our nation great again.

I cannot wait until Mr. Cain becomes President Cain, and we get all of the opposition from the liberal side of the aisle. Will the media charge racism on a daily basis?

The knee-jerk hate and simplistic thoughtless vitriol from the lefties in this forum are only proving Mr. Cain's point.....

Once you go Herman Cain you never go Back! Herman will make a great President. Indeed I believe Herman is exactly what the abused Black American Society desperately needs to break free of the tentacles and oppression of the demagogues and racists in the Democratic Party. Once his message gets out I believe the black community will run to his side. Blacks are tired of being treated like pawns and zombies. You go Herman ! The Washington DC Establishment can no longer ignore this man. He will be the great uniter unlike the present "Divider and Chief".

Liberals are at it again, first of all. The democrats have done nothing for the black community and the black community for the most part will vote for the democrat because of the safety net. Blacks want and need welfare, the democrats use that as a tool to keep their vote. if welfare and racial set asides have worked why aren't blacks better off? You libs can continue to blame Bush and the tea party but the democrats have brought this country to its knees. Does Obama care about the defecit? his 2012 budget would have added 10 trillion in debt over the next 10 years and was defeated in the senate 97-0. His new jobs bill, Harry Reid won't touch it. keep blaming others that is what the democrats and the blacks have in common.

Just more proof positive that politicians will say anything they can about any portion of the voting public to get elected. Cain knows that his statements aren't true but he has evolved into a career politician and recent past history has proven undeniably that they will make whatever statements, no matter how baseless, to get you to vote for them. Have you heard the one about how you can tell if a politician is lying? Anytime that their lips are moving.

One of the most historical debates our country will have will be the debate between Herman Cain and Pres Obama. It will be a phenomenal debate. It will be very enlightening for every American and it is only a debate Herman Cain and Mr Obama can have together. To find out the caliber of candidate Herman is – go to Do not let this opportunity pass to find out about Herman.

Teh whining that I hear on this post is amazing. The addage taught to me by my black mother (white father) was: The place you are most likely to find a helping hand is at the end of your own arm! In other words, she taught me and my siblings to stand up for ourselves and if we worked at a 100% pace, we would suceed.

Jason said above "I wonder if a brainwashed person would readily admit to being brainwashed." If you are brainwashed you don't know it. Good ol' Herman may be a bit hyperbolic with that brainwashed comment. Jews routinely vote solidly Democrat as well (pushing 80% for BHO as I recall) and I am sure you could find other groups who consistently vote one way or the other at a high % It not brainwashing. They are all just misguided when they always vote one way. LOL

But Herman Cain in my opinion is the best one out there that is running or even thinking of running on either side.

Way to go Cain. It is about time a black person wasn't afraid to speak the truth. Southern dems wanted segregation. Anyways to the truth there is democrat in the wh who is with his administration is single handedly destroying this country. GWB was Einstien compared to this crumbcake.

Herman Cain is partially right, it's not that the black community is brainwashed. They just realize that if a Republican was in office they would lose most of their "special benefits" and heaven forbid minorities actualy have to earn what they give and be forced to stop sucking at the teet of the federal govt. Mr. Cain has my vote if he is chosen to run.

Spoken from someone already brainwashed. Mr Cain, don't you think it is a bit odd that you appear to be the ONLY African-American spokesperson for the Tea Party? Uh, do you think they are using you to try and off-set the racism accusations? Who brainwashed who here?

He has my attention – not a career politician , a businessman s
Cain seems more to the point and fresher than other pols that have there hat in the ring.
    And more grounded as well

At this moment he have my vote - this was not true last week.

Obama failed by not recognizing the serious state of the union - back when healthcare was the push - huge mistake.
it is jobs... as it was several years back , but to start today per se cannot make up for wasted time.
and IMO the last of vision needed to run a nation like ours.

i can see black to black presidents - but this time one who is not a novelty but appears sober and not so haughty.
