BORGER: Mitt Romney, waiting for yes

Editor's note: Gloria Borger is CNN's chief political analyst, appearing regularly on shows such as "AC360," "The Situation Room," "John King USA" and "State of the Union."

Washington (CNN) - So now that the Republican Party has dated just about everyone in the field, the question remains: What about the fellow your parents tried to fix you up with in the first place? Does he look any better now? Are you ready to get serious about him?

Mitt Romney is still at the door, waiting for you to say yes.

"This was supposed to be the year the Republican Party would boldly break its own mold."

They did that long long ago when they embraced the southern strategy. The GOP of the past half century is nothing like the party from whence it came. Not even remotely.

Again, he is UNlikeable. People find him weird, too corporate oriented and totally UNable to stand up for anything. I wonder how much money he'll spend this time around before his wife gives him that "look" again.

    Mitt CAN'T win.

Republican support for Mittens can be compared to people getting excited about the grand slam at Denny's and ordering plain oatmeal.

Republicans won't vote for him in the general election. They have made it clear by looking everywhere for an alternative to Romney, even though no one else who is electable is running. The reasons: he is a Mormon, he is the godfather of Obama's health care plan, and most importantly, he is not a good candidate. Republicans, if they vote for Romney, are really voting for their version of Obama, a middle-of-road politician, except that Romney is not the same league as Obama when it comes to speech-making and campaigning. He is like Al Gore, a wooden candidate running on competence. There is a reason why the Tea Parties immediately embraced Perry when he started his campaign, without knowing where he stands on the issues important to them, like immigration. It should be noted that since Perry's positions become better known, his support is collapsing, but the support he is losing is going to other candidates, not Romney. The Tea Partiers did not know Perry, but it did not matter. They know Romney.

Hoping ya’ll will pick him to run - and alleviate some of his stress
But the “flavor of the week” is CAIN – so you might just have to wait
'til the far-RIGHT wake and CRY, “OMG, not Cain as the “head of these state!!!”

Then all of a sudden Perry's poll numbers will begin to go on a rise
And MITTens will drop to 2nd – maybe even third then meet his demise
It’s very “obvious” that the far-RIGHT is in control and running the show
It’s very “obvious” in 2012 we’ll shout – “PRESIDENT OBAMA – WAY TO GO!!!!!”

    Obama/Biden 2012!!

the gop, such as it is, will grudgingly agree to wed romney for the nomination, and then instantly start cheating by having an affair of the heart with a third-party candidate. the election will be a love/hate triangle.
