(CNN) -– House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Sunday that comments made by Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown about a Democratic rival showed a “disrespect for women.”
Brown made the remarks Thursday, when asked about candidate Elizabeth Warren’s statement that she had “kept her clothes on” while paying for college. Warren was making reference to a nearly nude 1982 Cosmopolitan magazine photo shoot that Brown did to earn money at age 22.
When asked about the comment during a radio interview with WZLX in Boston, Brown said only, "Thank God.”
Pelosi said Sunday on the ABC program “This Week” that the comment was disrespectful.
“The response you just gave, 'Thank God,' really, I thought spoke volumes about how clueless Senator Brown is,” Pelosi said. “It really spoke volumes about, really, disrespect for women that he may not even realize. I bet you he'd like to take that comment back.”
Pelosi acknowledged that the comment was likely meant to be a joke, but maintained that it was still revealing of Brown’s character.
“I hope it's joke-y. And if it is, then hopefully he will take that comment back. But women know. They hear a comment like that, it tells you a lot about somebody,” Pelosi said.
I suppose it was perfectly respectful for Warren to allude to Brown's youthful modeling. If a female candidate had posed in lingerie ads to make extra income in college, would it be sexist to mention it when she runs for office 20 years later?
The economy is in the toilet, the dollar has rallied at 75 cents to the euro, our democracy is about to be swept away by a bunch neo-Fascist oligarths, and this is the best you can do Congressperson Pelosi?
Warren can dish it out but she can't take it- she took a shot at Brown, he came back with something better End of story. Pelosi is just trying to create a headline that paints a Republican as misogynist.
Nancy 'pass it to find out what's in it' Pelosi, has zero credibility. Her fake outrage and insincere indignation in this matter is laughable.
It would appear pelosi has shown her values time and again so who cares what she has to say?...about anything??!!
Sorry, folks, no story here. Pelosi is feigning self-righteous indignity to polarize (gullible) fringe voters. Move along.
😉
What has this country become, where simple humor cannot even be uttered anymore?!?
Give me a guy who calls a spade a spade, without any regards to so-called"political correctness" and I'll vote for him for president! Anything else is the sign of a wimp!
This is the best thing I've heard in recent memory. Someone give this man a medal.
Elizabeth Warren should not hit such a low blow. I mean, it all fair game once you open the door to insults. What was his choice to stay quiet and let her state something he has already talked about and the fact is he was 22. Maybe this lesson should be about keep the personal issues out and the political ones in. Are you listening Elizabeth Warren?
"...when asked about candidate Elizabeth Warren’s statement that she had “kept her clothes on” while paying for college, Brown said only, "Thank God.”
It was just a witty retort. A pretty good one too. Don't make a Federal case out of it, Nancy.
In "Nobody's Fool", Paul Newman drops in on Melanie Griffith, who is upstairs, and he playfully asks, "Are you naked ?" "No, but I can be in a minute", she playfully replies.
Newman then looks around the corner and spots Horace, the elderly handyman, working on Ms. Griffith's front door lock.
"I ain't naked either," deadpans Horace.
"Thank God for that..." mutters Newman.
Pelosi get your head out of your behind. I am a female and no way at all did I see any disrespect with his comment. So what he said "thank god" that Warren kept her clothes on. Oh no someone call the hate crimes police. Boohoo Pelosi is crying wolf.
"Brown said only, "Thank God.”
Every time a political figure makes an affirmation of his deep religious faith, somebody has to bash him for it.
Of course it was a joke...have fun on the campaign trail, Scott, as you seek to stop the massive government spending that your liberal opponents support. And I agree, Thank God she left her clothes on! !
What's truly "joke-y" is that we have a former Speaker of the House who talks and thinks with the precision of a Valley Girl.
Go Warren! We need more politicians like her.
So women can make a snarky comment and if a man replies it's "disrespectful?" can't have it both ways.
She should realize that he was in the beginning making fun of himself. As far as the "thank God" comment, we have to be honest that there are many people we would make that comment about. Such as, "thank God" Barney frank did not take his clothes off during the state of the union. Now, is that disrespectful to men? I think not!
I will likely vote democrat in the next few years and no fan of Brown but Pelosi is quite wrong about this and grandstanding..you cant have it both ways and she is being ridiculous..warren fired first and browns response was fair enough under the circumstances
Why can women make all kinds of rude comments about men's bodies, fitness, sex capabilities, body language of men, etc. but men can't return the favor without being counter-bad-mouthed with accusations of being "disrespectful." It goes both ways.
Ah yes, the thin-skinned liberals can dish it out but can't take even the most oblique digs. Nancy makes me barf. Thank God.
And we care what Nancy pelosi thinks? Warren brought it up. She can make a joke about it and not take the response? What do you think would have happened if it was Scott brown who tossed her line? Nancy would have been all over him. Nancy needs to go. She has single handedly ruined obama's presidency. Loser!
Brown is a jerk toward women.
Pelosi? And we would know you from ... ? [In the smarmy tone of David Spade on SNL as the L.A. talent agency receptionist].
Not disrespectful to women in general at all. Disrespectful to Warren? Sure. But she shouldn't have opened up her mouth to take shots if she didn't expect them in response.
Had this been directed at another male, no one would have batted an eye except perhaps to laugh it off. So why is it that Pelosi thinks a woman deserves special consideration?
Seems to me Warren should have kept her big mouth shut. What difference does it make what Brown did when he was 22?
I think Brown's response was quite funny actually. Maybe Warren will now focus on political issues. And what a hypocrite
Pelosi is. Ask her how she accumulated such a huge growth in net worth the years she's been in Washington.
