
(CNN) - Arguing the election cycle has too many presidential debates, Rick Perry's top spokesman said the Texas governor could use more time with voters instead of taking the stage with Republican opponents.
"We're about 60 days away from votes being cast," communications director Ray Sullivan said on CNN's "John King, USA" Wednesday. "The candidates need to spend time in Iowa doing those town halls and spending a lot more time with the voters, who oftentimes have the best questions and press the candidates the hardest."

Washington (CNN) - The Department of Homeland Security is not helping Alabama as it tries to implement its controversial new immigration law, Secretary Janet Napolitano said Wednesday.
In response to questions from House Judiciary Committee members, Napolitano stressed her department is working with the Department of Justice, which is challenging the law, and it's not clear what the full impact of the measure might be.

The announcement comes a day after Gingrich told reporters in Concord that his fundraising levels had spiked in October. The former speaker was in town Tuesday to file his paperwork for candidacy in the state's primary.

(CNN) - Rep. John Olver, D-Massachusetts, announced he will retire after serving out his 10th term in the House of Representatives in 2013.
"Last December, I announced that I intended to seek to continue my congressional service beyond 2012," Olver said in a statement on Wednesday. "Over the past six months, circumstances within my family have substantially changed, and I now find I must reconsider my earlier decision."

(CNN) - White House hopeful Michele Bachmann on Wednesday mailed the paperwork needed to get on the ballot for New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation presidential primary.
The announcement comes days after her five-member New Hampshire campaign staff resigned en masse, accusing the Minnesota congresswoman's national campaign handlers of being "rude, unprofessional, dishonest, and at times cruel."

(CNN) - Mitt Romney is on the top or tied for the lead in the race for the Republican presidential nomination in new surveys in the first four states to vote in next year's primary and caucus calendar.
According to CNN/Time/ORC International polls released Wednesday, the former Massachusetts governor continues to be the overwhelming front-runner in New Hampshire, holds a lead over the other GOP presidential candidates in Florida, and is basically tied for the top spot with businessman Herman Cain in Iowa and South Carolina.
