Obama tackles drug shortages, prices

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama signed an executive order Monday designed to help reduce a growing number of prescription drug shortages while protecting patients from possible pharmaceutical industry price gouging.

Among other things, the order requires the Food and Drug Administration to increase its reporting of possible shortages of certain prescription drugs, while also speeding up regulatory reviews of new drug manufacturing sites, drug suppliers and manufacturing changes.

Baggers, Fox, and CNN are not going to be happy about this, but Obama deserves thanks for getting something done without the help of the dysfunctional congress.

And if more people bought their Rx's on line from Canada ~ they would save a heck-of-a-lot more. Maybe THEN the U.S. distributors would come back down to earth and the reality that "sticking" it to those in need of medications is not the best way to win friends & influence people. Plus ~ an added feature ~ Canada releases the generics LONG before the U.S. It really is easy to order & one just needs to fax their prescription once their order[s] is/are placed. Good luck to all of you who choose to hold these greedy companies accountable ~ once & for all!

What a shame that he has to use executive orders because republicans are unwilling to work with him. Shame!

Are you kidding me Sandy? This is a bunch of bs! Obviously some people believe this liar! Riddle me this why is the price of a barrel of oil at it lowest cost in years but yet we are still paying over 3 dollars a gallon. If this was Bush in office you would want his head. This guy just wants to grow government and control more of you lives why can you not see this. Do you honestly think he cares about your health? He is just trying to get votes wake up!

Do you know why it is so much cheaper everywhere else? It is because we put so many restrictions and regulations on these companies that they have to charge this! Guess who started this the democratic party!!!! Don't just take my word for it do some research! We can't get out of our own way!

Obama and the Democrats had the House , Senate and White House for the majority of this presidents term. Trying to blame the GOP is not going to work just simply based on that fact. How can he claim he was obstructed when they passed everything they wanted in 2009 and 2010. They had their chance and they have failed. Period. Why would we want to do more of the same (Stimulus 2.0)?

Now we have this new gimmick with the same type of simplistic three word chant. (we can't wait)... (pass this bill) (yes we can).... People are tired of these gimmicks...Student Loan Relief..HA! The average student will pay about 15 bucs less a month...GIMMICK!!!!!!!!!

Im not sure who the bigger idiot is, Obama or the fools who think that this will do anything. He sees his poll numbers declining no mater what he does so he'd trying to hoodwing the most gullable people into believing he's actually doing something. What an absolute joke this worthless guy is, how did we let this clown get into office?

The Bush drug deal was a gift to the pharmaceutical industry – on the backs of the taxpayer. It's nice to now have a President who serves as an advocate for the people rather than a lap dog for the lobbyists.

  18. The Greedy Old PIgs have declared class war on US!

"iddle me this why is the price of a barrel of oil at it lowest cost in years but yet we are still paying over 3 dollars a gallon. If this was Bush in office you would want his head."

Mike, if you take the time to think this through you'll get a bit closer to the truth. In fact, many of us were angry at Bush not because he was responsible for those increases, but because he and his cronies did nothing to stop Wall Street's speculators from driving up prices. Now the GOBP deathcult has blocked all attempts to stop such speculation, how can you realistically blame the President? OWS!

  19. Keeping it Real

In reality, this is another move by Obama to try and garner votes, however like his other recent decisions will have little effect on how drugs are manufactured. The FDA has no authority whatsoever to regulate how many drugs a company produces or stockpiles. For once, I'd like to see more substance over style in this President, but I fear that will never happen. He's a campaigner and he's proven that over the past year. Too bad he isnt a leader.

  20. The Greedy Old Pigs have lost their minds!

"Do you know why it is so much cheaper everywhere else? It is because we put so many restrictions and regulations on these companies that they have to charge this! "

Mike, I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt, but now you're spouting Fakes News lies. There has been no large increase in regulatory costs associated with gasoline production, refining or retailing. By far the largest factor behind price increases has been Wall Street speculators. Since you seem so upset about gas prices, perhaps you should join OWS.

  21. The Greedy Old Pigs have lost their minds!

"The FDA has no authority whatsoever to regulate how many drugs a company produces or stockpiles."

For someone who claims to be "Keeping it Real" you apparently have a difficult time with reality. Did you even read the full article? Are you aware that price-fixing and monopolistic practices have been illegal for many years?

Ok!how about this why don't the drug companies make drugs that heal instead drugs that are a bandaid and cause side effects and damage other parts of the body. We all know Drugs are a buisness! But enough damage has already been done to keep the pushers rich.

Good job President Obama! This needed to be done and it's best to step over the do-nothing republican congress (yes, republican congress. They control the house and through their over-use of the fillibuster also control the senate.) He's doing what's right for the nation and as a cancer patient, I appreciate his efforts on this and on health care reform. I'm glad to see him taking his plans directly to the American people – again stepping over the do-nothing republican congress who are more interested in playing political games and securing electoral victory than helping this nation recover. The gop is just pathetic.

and the GOP plan to fix it is....lemme guess, more anti-abortion laws or anti-gay legislature designed to boost the economy? No I know, the Republican Health Care Plan: PLEASE DIE QUICKLT. Republicans:keeping millions uninsured and unemployed in an effort to put ONE man out of a job.
